    I subscribed for many reasons but the biggest reason is your eloquence and calm yet fun attitude as compared to most youtubers who are putting themselves first and makig themselves look so fun and amusing when we need serious information thus arrogant in that regard. You have all the qualities of a true leader. Thank you. P.S. I am getting 35mm 1.4 for making videos but was considering 50mm 1.4

    I am so glad I bought this lens, which stood on the shelf in the store for a long time as a sample. And in the end I bought it new for half the price. Great and very sharp lens, starting from f/1.4, I have been using it for several months and have not received a single blurry photo yet. And no chromatic aberrations or flare. Just test it in the store for as long as it takes to fully check the lens and buy when you are completely sure that this is what you need. And in general, worry less about all the little things, enjoy the process of shooting!

    I own this lens and I like it very much. It can handle the most difficult lighting situations with ease and makes great shots, there are almost no lens flares. Great autofocus, creamy bokeh. Especially blue colors are really bright and get incredibly intense with this lens. This lens does also great images at night. In many cases, I can distinguish the shots with this lens just by looking at the bright colors of the preview. I just miss a switch to go to manual focus.

    I own the 35 1.4 and it's my favorite lens but I agree that it's not a great value. I got it $300 on a recent sale and finally pulled the trigger because I was tired of waiting for the 35 1.8 from Sony. Well, they announced one today and my initial reaction was to see how much I could sell the 1.4 for and preorder the 1.8 After looking back at reviews of the 1.4 I kept getting reminded just how incredible it is and finally decided that value wasn't as important to me at this stage as how much joy I have using this lens and the types of images it produces. I wonder if we'll see a ton of 1.4's hitting the used market - it could be a great pickup for people who are willing to go that route. Great video, Shane - just discovered your channel.

      Thanks for watching the video Daniel, its really encouraging getting comments like this 😊 I have very similar feeling about this lens, it's consistently one of my favorite lens, between the contrast it gets and the tactile control of it, it's just a pleasure to use. I'm very interested in how the 35mm 1.8 does, it's price point seems to indicate it's going to be high performing, but I really think at this point if you have the 1.4 you're totes right to hold onto it.

      Thanks Paul! I spent months trying to find some one selling it used before I got my hands on a copy of one, but I just want Sony to release a new 35mm because its pretty silly the only two options are only premium Zeiss 35mm 1.4 or 2.8. Nice review.
    It’s probably not a lens I’ll ever get (I, like many, am waiting for a 35mm F1.8) but I like that you are reviewing a lens you own. Sometimes it can take a while to decide if you really like something after the new gear shine wears off.

    • @ShaneBethlehem
      @ShaneBethlehem  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you,, I got lucky getting mine used but it's not the best value if you're starting out and I hope to Sony comes out with a couple new 35s, cuz they certainly have the interest I think, and they haven't come out with any consumer-level lenses in a long time

    • @reg171reg
      @reg171reg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShaneBethlehem I think the last "affordable" lens Sony released was the 50mm F1.8 which by all accounts is not great. If they build a 35mm with IQ and focus speed similar to the 85mm F1.8 I'll be first in line.

    Nice review! I'm about to buy my first fullframe camera (A7 III) and I think I will buy this lens as my always-go-to-lens. I love the 35mm look and the amazing shallow depth of field.
    In addition I'm thinking about buying the FE 85mm 1.8 (I've watched your review as well) for portrait work and closer shots. Would you say this is a nice combo?
    Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany!

    • @ShaneBethlehem
      @ShaneBethlehem  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the 85 1.8 was my first lens for the a7riii when i got it and I loved using it, but it is not as versatile day-to-day so I was still adapting all my old Canon lenses. I think you should look at the Sony 35 1.8 maybe if you want a lil but more of a portable. However, if you are going shallow with your depth of field, the 1.4 is going to make you really happy!

  • @frametrapvisuals2697
    @frametrapvisuals2697 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    After buying the Zeiss batis 40mm f2 from a recent price reduction, I think I may replace my Sony Zeiss 35mm 1.4 with it. Colors, contrast, and sharpness just pop on the Batis, and subjects pop more, like a real zeiss lens should, something I felt lacking with the Zony 35 (but still fell in love with the bokeh). Edge to edge sharpness is unreal wide open. The close focus is great for detail shots. It's much more versatile imo, especially if you lack a macro lens. The only drawback is the f2, but the rendering is still beautiful, can get nice separation because of the increased compression and close focus distance.

    • @ShaneBethlehem
      @ShaneBethlehem  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want to get my hands on the 40mm some day, it looks like a far far more practical lens to travel with as well considering the awesome build/size. I hope you have a blast with the lense, I think its totally a great alternative to this lens.
      I think Sony needs to make a 35mm GM, because this lens is great, but 35mm is such a staple lens for most photographers and the GM line up is missing a nice 35mm and 50mm that is comparable to the 24/85/135mm lenses they have released in terms of build and consistent performance.

  • @chryseass.5143

    Hi Shane, your enthusiasm for this lens is making me consider it for a future purchase if I see a good used copy. Having recently acquired the 24GM, I now understand the mystique and allure of the f1.4 . and definitely can attest to the value of that lens. You would love it and can punch in to around 35mm by using the crop mode on the a7riii or iv and still have enough pixels for you to peep at! So two great focal lengths for the price of one. Hmm, I can see an upgrade for my camera body in my future.......

      @@xyxysun5056 I'm looking at picking up a used copy and wanted to know what was the best way you'd suggest to test a good copy from a bad one? Charts? What aperture should I test it? I'd only be able to test it out at the shop so no taking it for a spin outdoors

    • @ShaneBethlehem
      @ShaneBethlehem  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I were you I'd test it wide open and just find the most complex pattern thing you can in the room at a decent distance away and focus on it, take a few pictures and then zoom in on the camera and look around the edges of the frame to see if anything looks too off. Overall though it would be very hard to see without and nice large file on a computer. It's just kind of the risk you take when getting used unfortunately, I always bring a small flashlight with to shine through the lens and just shine on the front and back elements to make sure they're not scratched or there's any debris inside it.

    Question
    Why don’t you mention the Zeiss 35 2.8? What are you thoughts on it ?

    • @ShaneBethlehem
      @ShaneBethlehem  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I originally had it in the script for this video but ended up removing it just cuz the video is so long. But honestly it's a great lens that has great image quality and is super small, the only reason I didn't consider it is because of the f 2.8, I prefer faster prime lenses and the 2.8 just wasn't enough for me and I'd perfer to get a zoom if I got a 2.8 lens personally. (And I did, the Tamron 2.8)
      So I didn't compare it in this video cuz it's kind of a different class of lens, ideally Sony will be coming out with their own 35 f1.8. If you are in the market for the 35 2.8 I'd suggest you look at the 28mm f2 also which is a little bit of a nicer lens in terms of value.

My only issue that I'd have with it from what I heard is the size and weight, I was hoping that sigma would redesign the 35 1.4 to make it more compact for mirrorless, but the 35 1.2 is now bigger and heavier, which is kinda a turn off for me

      Unfortunately I don't have a ton of experience with the 35 f1.8. From what I've seen though it's a super sharp lens, but if you're coming from Leica stuff I get your mindset.
      The 35 F 1.4 is an older design now though as is obvious by its size, and the quality control kind of sucks on it. It's still my daily driver for most of my work but it's not a perfect lens by any means either and I think you might be disappointed by how close it gets to being great without being perfect.
