When I was an 8 year old kid, I went to Shea Stadium to see to Mets vs. Phillies. I was a huge fan of Lenny Dykstra with him formerly being a Met, so considering he was on the Phillies at this time, I saw this as an opportunity to try to get his autograph. I shouted out to Lenny "Can I have an autograph" and he looked right at me and told me to "F off kid". John Kruk overheard this, ran half way across the infield to the third base line and said "F*ck that guy, he's an assh*le kid". He took off his hat, signed it, screamed into the dugout for them to throw him a ball, he signed it and then pulled me towards him and told my Mother to take a picture. He then he kissed the top of my head while grabbing my face and said "Don't look up to Lenny Dykstra, he's a loser". I've been a mega fan of John Kruk ever since. Absolute chad!
Dude looks like a weekend softball player, who just happens to be able to hit a baseball very well!!! A great personality of the game. Always enjoyed watching him as a player and as a broadcaster.
Kruk is the consummate baseball lifer and just a fabulously authentic, fun man. I wish him nothing but the utmost continued success as he continues his broadcasting career in Philly and whatever else he chooses to pursue. I'm not even a Phillies or Padres fan but I just love John Kruk.
I was 11, growing up in the Philly burbs in 93 and that ragtag, motley crew will ALWAYS be my favorite team. They're even more beloved than the 08 squad because they LOOKED like the guys who took away garbage and drove 18 wheelers. Dykstra, Inky and Dutch to name a few were the everyman team that will never be seen again.
I wish he'd been able to play longer. We loved him in SD. His career .397 OBP and .843 OPS says it all. Perhaps if he'd taken better care of himself he would not have broken down so soon. He hit .308 with a .399 OBP in that last season with the White Sox.
Have enjoyed the player / career retro videos. What sticks out now is the use of "indelible" in every one. Had to wait until 8:46 and 10:17 in the video to hear it twice. The word "indelible" has now made an indelible mark on my retro video watching experience. Thank you!
I have a fantasy baseball team I am putting together. It has John Kruk, Kent Hrbek, Cecil Fielder, Jason Giambi, Greg Luzinski, Miguel Cabrera, Steve Balboni, Pablo Sandoval, Bengie Molina, and a pitching staff of CC Sabathia, Fernando Valenzuela and Roger Clemons. I think there is also a spot for David Ortiz and Adam Dunn.
As if it’s that simple. It requires a super high degree of hand-eye coordination, and overall balance, timing, and athleticism. You try hitting a 90mph pitch then see what you think.
The other day I saw a video on TH-cam where a usa football coach said soccer isn't an athletic sport. All I could picture was his offensive line trying to play real football against a women's football team
I watched this guy play in Beaumont, Texas for the double A Golden Gators....idk what you think... the man had talent....Beneto Santiago was also on the team.... good time
All MLB players are athletes. If you made a list of all the components of athleticism, compared rookie Kruk in 1986 to the average American male his age, I guarantee you that Kruk would have been far ahead.
He was a Quasimodo, the hunchback of MLB he was the stifist player in baseball. I don't think he was even a baseball player at all. In sam Diego we use to call him the turtle.
I can't understand how a baseball player does not train at all and can swing a wood bat, to swing a bat, metal or wood, you have to be strong and at least go to gym and do some cardio, so this guy was probably in roids and just train a little bit
They are all ballplayers except maybe the pitchers... 1. They don't sweat while playing 2. They get hurt running and 3. They need to take a timeout in between swings.
a great factoid was when he returned to practice after his testicular surgery, he wore a shirt saying "be nice to me or I'll take my ball and go home"
The John Daly of baseball. Loved this guy even as a Buccos Fan.
More like Ruth part 2, without as many homers.

Looking up Dykstra post baseball life, Kruk was spot on
John Kruk has a higher lifetime BA, OBP, OPS, and OPS+ than Bo Jackson, in almost twice as many games.

Yea, compared to average people he was strong looking and had some athleticism, but was not in great shape for an "athlete".
