You could see the look on Villeneuve's face on the podium after the San Marino race at 6:47. It spoke volumes. Two weeks later at the Belgian GP at Zolder. His temper no less abated, found that Pironi had qualified higher than Villeneuve. It was nearing the end of the final qualifying session & Villeneuve went out on used tyres, determined to get ahead of Pironi at all costs. In doing so he hit the back of Jochen Mass's slowing March, sending the high speed Ferrari airbourne & throwing Villeneuve out of the wreckage, leaving him gravely injured. He died overnight. Villeneuve should have probably left it for race day to attempt to better Pironi but his red mist got the better of him.
@@F1Icons Wouldn't have surprised me if Pironi tried to reconcile with Villeneuve between Imola & Zolder, but undoubtedly Villeneuve didn't want to know.
2:20 he did a test in Paul Ricard in 1986 with Ligier and he was running fast but he said that the only reason why he will be back into F1 IS if he have the car to challenging for a title but Ligier couldn't so thats why he didn't came back in formula 1
They say: "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything". It is well known that Gilles accused Didier of back-stabbing him, and never forgave him for that. Sad, but it is what it is.
I had to go look this up as it was lost somewhere in my mind. I van see the reasons for Villeneuve to be angry with Pironi because of the last lap pass at Imola. It's one of those things that I don't agree with in F1, but I understand the reason behind team orders at times, and with Ferrari at that time Enzo ruled, period. Villeneuve was the number one at Ferrari and Pironi the number two, and the mantra at Ferrari was the constructors championship was more important than the driver's championship. Pironi should have held his place to prevent a possibility of an accident taking out both cars and not getting constructors points.

Yes you're right, we didn't even notice that!

I always remember Pironi being personally sponsored by Candy & Haribo.
@@ianjarrett2724 Certainly remember Candy being prominently on his overalls, & on Tyrrels when he raced for them.
I wonder what would be the outcome of that race at Zolder, if Gilles hadn't died.
He should never have passed Gilles for the win, it caused the bad karma that followed them both.
Indeed he shouldn't have

@@kallsop2I don't agree, Ferrari always puts the WDC first. They don't need the WCC money

What do you mean precisely? Cheers.
