Thanks for such a precise procedure. I suppose the camera is directly connected to the pc via firewire. But if I want to transfer HDV material from a Sony Z1 to a modern win10 laptop with no firewire port, can I use a capture card like Pinnacle 510 USB? Does Edius recognizes it as a connected device?
We would recommend to use a PC with firewire to capture HDV. You will get the best possible quality in that way. You can either use another PC with Firewire. Windows 10 still supports firewire. Pinnacle 510 USB is not supported and will not offer good quality anyway.

Our company recently switched to laptops without FireWire ports. And yet I still want to capture HDV video from my old Handycam, which has a 4-pin FireWire output I’ve always used in the past. Do you have a recommendation for converting from FireWire? The laptop ports I have to choose from are USB, HDMI and Thunderbolt 3. Thanks. - John in Minnesota
The only possible connection is Thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt 2 with an Adaptor and then Thunderbolt 2 -> Firewire 800 with another Adaptor. Then use a 9-pin to 4-pin Firewire Cable to connect the DV-handycam. Costs: about 100€
great video. I am sure I used the right settings, but cannot see the footage when playing back on the HDV... anyone knows how to solve this problem? Problem in capturing from DVI camera on playback Edius 9 version 9.52.6384 Win10 64 Sony hdr hc7 So far: Settings/device preset /new device/interface HDV/videoformat 1440x1080 Connected the device. On opening camera i can see the image the camera displays. I can record the actual image of the camera On the playback setting of the camera I can control play/backward/forward. But only see a grey field in edius. When I use play still the grey image. On my camera I can see the playbackimage. I cannot record. On recording in the top there is a grey box with a horizontal stripe instead of the red round recording-sign. Tried different cables: no effect
If you follow the steps, it will work. You are right now only seeing the video from the timeline, not the source. you need to select the source, than the capture button will show up. Or you open the dual view monitor where you see both (player/recorder) at the same time.
Thanks this really worked! Now i need to find how everything works xd wish me luck

EDIUS.NET - Thanks! I’ll give it a try
Should the camera be set on special mode or setting?
Not really. If you work in DV, it should state "DV" in the Display, if it is HDV, it should show "HDV". HDV->DV Conv. should not be enabled.
thx a lot
