      The GBC port of "Cannon Fodder" is really impressive technically with the amount of compressed 3D pre-rendered sprites in the menu and the 3D pre-rendered opening cutscene, but also the SFX are also compressed samples that push the audio capabilities of the GBC as well. Excluding the theme song because it sounds like its coming from a PC-Beeper speaker. No disrespect to Clint of LGR or the Nostalgia Nerd, Not bad for a Amiga to GBC port, They did sacrifice some of the controls from the computer ports.

    That gameboy version of Dragon's Lair (the original GB, not the GBC) was actually a port of an old ZX speccy game called Rollercoaster.

      I remember buying it from Toys R Us as a kid, having absolutely zero clue what Metal Gear Solid was at the time, I must have played MGS on GBC front to back at least 30 times throughout my years with the GameBoy. Unbelievable game.

  • @FatalKitsune
    @FatalKitsune 8 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    Suggestion: Live-A-Live, a JRPG for the SNES that never made it over here. It's a game where you play through different timelines as different characters and almost every one of them plays completely differently. There's a sci-fi segment that is basically an adventure game, a wrestling/fighting tourney that is just a series of battles, a ninja segment where you can be completely stealthy, a prehistoric segment with no dialogue, etc. It's crazy strange and crazy good.

      Yeah, I did not see that remake coming. Now where is our Terranigma? I mean heck, there’s already a translation for that game (though I’m not sure who owns it. Is it Square Enix via Enix?)

    • @TheCrewExpendable
      @TheCrewExpendable ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leeartlee915 Yeah whats weird to me are all the games that basically have an English translation but were never released in the USA. Lots of weird games that got and English PAL release in the UK but not the US. Demon's Souls had an English translation in East Asia which basically was responsible for all of Souls because that translation meant people in the US could import it (the PS3 thankfully not being region locked for games), which lead to Atlus seeing there was enough demand to really publish it in the US, which lead to enough demand world wide for Dark Souls to be published, and the rest is history!

      I bought my loose copy back in 2005-2006 for $7. Probably the best retro game deal I ever got. It's crazy how expensive that game is now and it has never been rereleased, which is a shame as Ghost Babel is easily one of the best Gameboy Color games ever made and debatably, the best 2D Metal Gear game. At least it's an easy game to emulate.

    Wow Derek, this is truly a great idea! I am a big fan of showcasing games that don't get talked about or in this case are impressive or noteworthy titles that managed to do what they did. I certainly didn't know the GBC Dragon's Lair port was as authentic as it was, and only know Warlocked and MGS: Ghost Babal for there awesome soundtracks, and legendary Jeroen Tel being the main audio man for Warlocked!
    A title I would like to see mentioned on a future episode is *Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3D* for SNES, it probably has the most insane use of paralax scrolling for the SNES, and is brutally difficult, with an amazing soundtrack. So take what you will of where the game can fit in, but I would recommend looking into it! ;)

    • @StopSkeletonsFromFighting
      @StopSkeletonsFromFighting  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +WiiGuy's 8BitStereo; oh yeah, Jim Power, that's a good one! it's really hard, is a very bad way, but that shifting perspective makes the game truly unplayable! and i'm sure you know this but that soundtrack tho!

    • @Nikos8BitStereo
      @Nikos8BitStereo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Stop Skeletons From Fighting Oh yes, I know your stance on Battletoads and games with that kind of difficulty, which Jim Power has. I did a review of that game on another channel I have and pretty much reviewed it in and out and it's whole brutal difficulty. But did highly admire the graphics and how no other game uses that paralax, and the amazing Chris Huelsbeck soundtrack!
      I'm a sucker for certain difficult games like that, and I love The Lost Dimension for being that so hard and must memorize and the level kind of game, which I can totally understand being unplayable for most.
      Now that I think of it, an episode of "Games Too Hard For Their Own Good" could work, and that's where Jim Power can be talked about ;)

  • @GentleHeretic
    @GentleHeretic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    I think Ghost Babel is actually a "what if" story that takes place after the original Metal Gear for the MSX, as though Big Boss hadn't returned... I think. I should play through the rest of it, it was like having a Metal Gear 3.

    • @MidnightMechanic
      @MidnightMechanic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This. THIS is what we should've got for the Super Nintendo, to fill the gap between the NES and Playstation. Course then the release of MGS for the Playstation wouldn't have had as much impact, but Ghost Babel plays a little better than the NES Metal Gear games, so it would've been a good starting point for SNES owners if it was ported.

      @selemanecu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      well a few certain codec conversations in mgs2 and completing the special missions in ghost babel imply it's Jack's (Raiden's) VR Mission based on the events of ground zeroes and the phantom pain of all games before those even came out...

    Aaah... Ghost Babel, my favorite Game Boy Color game ever.

    So cool to see somebody giving a shout to two lesser-known GBC classics, Warlocked and MGS. I was lucky enough to play these as a kid, when they came out, and MGS is easily one of my top GBC games.
    Personally, I had no idea Dragon's lair was an actual port. That doesn't surprise me though, with games like Alone in the Dark and The New Addam's Family. GBC had quite a few tricks up its sleeve.

    When it comes down to games like these, one of the better examples that come to mind is Alien Resurrection for the PS1. It lacked a lot of polish, making it an infuriatingly hard game that seemed impossible to beat at times, but the way its programmers made it push the PS1 to its limits in order to deliver an atmospheric experience is nothing short of amazing. You ought to check it out if you ever get the chance Derek.

  • @NeutralIon

    This is a pretty ace showcase for what the GBC was really capable of. I'm looking forward to more, Derek.
    And if you're inviting suggestions, I would put forward RECCA for the Famicom and Yoot Saito's Odama for GameCube. The former is a blisteringly fast 8-bit technical marvel, and the latter comes pretty damn close to collapsing under the weight of its own crazy ambition but nonetheless earns my respect.

    Had a pretty bleh day yesterday. Then I watched this video and it felt all worthwhile. Can't wait to see more episodes.
    As for suggestions on what to look at in future, I'd like to see your take on the Mega Drive/Genesis version of Sonic 3D Blast: Flickies' Island. I know folks prefer the Saturn version, but I still think the MD version got a hell of a lot done.
    Really smooth animation that could rival Vectorman, getting an FMV of all things to render half-decently on a system released in 1989, and a fantastic framerate despite what had to be rendered on screen at all times? I think that deserves a look, but I'll gladly enjoy seeing any more surprises you stumble upon.
    Thanks again, Derek, and have a good one! :)

    Great new series man! I've always found Ghost Babel really underrated and I had it numerous times as a kid (even when I'd sell it back I'd keep buying it again because it was that good!)
    I played the first two Metal Gears more recently on the Subsistence disc for MGS3 and its actually pretty cool to think this game is almost the reinterpretation of MGS1 in the classic style and for fans of those original 2 games, sort of a best of both worlds with the grand next gen console thing and the handheld version that is more faithlful to the original style.

Warlocked is one of my all time favorite GBC games! my friend and I would hang out on the flatbed of my truck and do head-to-head wars for hours! the only thing that's odd about the vs is that when your friend summons a wizard the whole game pauses and the one not summoning gets a warning screen saying your opponent is summoning a wizard. kinda plays mind games with you when you haven't found an altar in battle to summon your own. love that game!

    Great show, I had no idea somebody actually pulled off the "interactive movie" thing of "Dragon's Lair" into the 8-bit Game Boy Color. That's pretty cool.

    If I may, I'd like to suggest both The Fish Files and The New Addams Family Series, also for the GBC. Both of them are adventure games made by Cryo Interactive, and they're surprisingly well made, considering the hardware. I would also mention that Duke Nukem 3D brazilian port for the Genesis, yeah, it's not that good, but it's interesting to see how they tried to adapt the game to a Genesis cartridge.
    Looking forward to future episodes of this series, this is looking to be pretty good. Keep it up, Derek! :D

    Cool new series, Derek. There was an old SNES game, Majyuuou, or "King of Demons", that seems to be your type of thing. Its an action/horror game that wasnt released on the US, probably due to gruesome content. As you like old horror titles, its at least worth checking out (a fan translation also exists). Its more or less the SNES version of Monster Party, but its a more serious game, with some nice monster
    design. Give it a try, someday, if you have the opportunity.

    I'm astonished that you didn't go for the most infamously punching above it's weight game for the GBC of all time, Shantae!
    Then again, that game has it's time in the limelight, and you usually arent' about that.
    Still, there's a ton of insane crap for the GBC that could make one do a double take.

      +ClexYoshi Well, considering he put a rather well-known Metal Gear spinoff here, Shantae would be fine. Shantae's gotten a lot of love the past half-decade, so there would be plenty of fans who'd want to hear about it.

    Both Warlocked and Crystalis were games that I desperetaly wanted to add to my collection, but unfortunately I couldn't. I really hope this series continues, because there is so much weird ports like GTA on GBC, Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil on the GBC, FPS games on the GBA, or even recent things like Dead Rising on Wii, things that shouldn't exist but yet do.
    Because sometimes its a lot more fun to talk about how weird a game or a port is than a normal great game.

  • @granvillimus
    @granvillimus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    This sounds like (yet another) show of yours that will be very fun!
    You may already be considering this game (don't know if you've actually gone on to finish it and formed a final opinion on it), but Xenoblade Chronicles Wii probably qualifies for a show like this. Also, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus on PS2.
    Resident Evil 2 and Conker's Bad Fur Day are two to consider from the N64. Cramming RE2's prerendered backgrounds, voices and FMV's onto a 64MB cartridge (which used two CD's on PS1) was quite an accomplishment by Factor 5 (who incidentally have a lot of other technically impressive games under their belt if you're on the hunt for impressive games). Conker is also packed with full voice acting, and sports some super impressive visuals as well for N64 standards.
    Also take a look at the developer VD-dev. They are Amiga veterans who have insanely talented programmers. Their GB/GBC/GBA/DS/3DS games are truly a sight to behold. On GBA they created a fully 3D platformer called Asterix and Obelix XXL. They also managed a GTA-inspired sandbox game (also using polygonal 3D graphics) with Driv3r on GBA. They don't use a fixed camera with an overhead view, it's all over the shoulder and with a controllable camera. They also made a 60fps GTA style game on the DS called COP the Recruit. Their games aren't amazing gameplay wise (though not bad either) but they are absolutely amazing technical achievements. Their newest Ironfall Invasion game on 3DS is also very impressive as well.

    I can't believe I forgot Warlocked existed, because I owned it when I was a kid! My favorite mission from the campaign was the one where you had to escape the beast fortress with the Grunt... So many restarts from so many deaths.

  • @ChaoticKnightStudios

    I loved Warlocked so much as a kid... and I don't know if this is a well known game or not, but my suggestion for a future episode is another gameboy game I grew up with called Revelations: The Demon Slayer.
    I loved it, you could talk to and convince monsters and even powerful bosses and gods to join your party and fight with you. Then about 2 years ago I realized that it was part of a little well-known, continued series you might have heard of called Shin Megami Tensei, which also includes the Persona games that I love so much, and I never realized it!
    I've since gotten SMT IV, and love it. But I'll always remember and love Revelations.

      +Greg Brech There would be...so many people that would disagree with you, I feel. Tactics Advance does so many things that are completely opposite of the PSX original, it might be difficult for many fans of the original when they see how much is changed.

    • @fiiive2the5ix
      @fiiive2the5ix 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +UltimaKeyMaster I'm a huge hugeeee fan of the original, and honestly it's STILL a fft game. stripped down for sure, but being able to play that game on the go back in the day, on long family road trips, was amazing. I felt that it did a wonderful job not being anything too ambitious...simple story, easy controls. it's a 7/10 game but a strong one at that.

    I rarely got games other than a few every Christmas. I remember my Mom got me Dragon's Lair on GBC. I was disappointed at first and tried to return it to Toys'R'Us. But it was opened and they wouldn't accept it. Now as a 27 year old. I love revisiting it and have it memorized. Super fun to jump in from time to time on my SP.
