Yay new video, I began my MH adventure a few months ago with friends we bought world/iceborne and after trying a few weapons i saw your longsword videos and picked it up. thanks for the great content.
this is so well put together. like even using "face buttons" as terms instead of sticking with your own controller layout helps people like me who gets (embarrassingly) confused with the layouts a lot.
This video makes a whole lot more sense after realizing the LS players that I play with via SOS, either as host or joining others, come in two forms- they're either a basic combo player or a parry all player. I played MH way back in 2014 but only came back last year or so, although I did take a break. I was pretty young at the time and never watched guides so I was self-taught. I figured it was normal to use fade slash because it directly gets into the Spirit Blade II.
Hi Pike great video on longsword, I'd like to request a video for optimal punish for short/mid/long monster openings! (Any weapon you like) Also any interest for MHR Sunbreak guides and/or streaming?
Thanks! I've written, scrapped, rewritten, and scrapped an optimal punish guide for Great Sword, I just don't know if it will see the light of day before Wilds comes out 🥲. I love MHR too, but I want to focus on Wilds when it releases. I haven't really considered streaming. I'm just not at a stage in life where I can stream at consistent times, which I understand is a super important for streamers. If my situation changes, I'd be open to it, but I can't make any promises on when that might be. I can, however, keep this TH-cam channel going. I'll be uploading more consistently and have the next several videos planned out and scheduled. I hope you enjoy them!
@@Pike_Analysis With Wilds I will pray for your success, lets have another great generation of hunting. Even after Wilds peaked I'll stick around for the next portable MH release too.
Yeah I’m gonna just sub 😂 info is just too good and very detailed! As a long sword main I thank you sincerely! Here’s to the channel and the new adventures that await us in wilds! ❤
Great vid. One thing I'd add is that Iai Slash and Spirit Blades have innate Mind's Eye (your weapon doesn't bounce off no matter what), which make them even better, especially at early game where sharpness is an issue.
As newer player i dont find filling the spirit bar the hard part. The hardest part is doing a full spirit combo and lanidng the last attack to get the next level of spirit bar. And for perfect dodge combo that skips spirit combo, its kind of hard to position your self to dodge and then still be with in range for the next 2 hit to land.
I have a couple tips that might help: Yes, doing the full Spirit Blade combo is tough, This is why we want to be attacking with Spirit Blade II and Spirit Jumping Slash as much as possible. If you do this, you're able to make the most out of openings because you can immediately perform Spirit Blade III and Roundslash as soon as you realize you have enough time. For Foresight positioning, try to slide backwards into attacks like at 7:06. This really helps with positioning since it moves you forward and can put you in range to land the next two hits.
I won't be making one in the near future, but I can point you in the right direction! If you want a step by step for progression, this guide is super helpful for all weapons! mhwibuilds.wordpress.com/mr-progression-guides/#ls If you want to learn the basics of set building, I made a video showcasing two LS damage sets and one LS comfort set: th-cam.com/video/AzfJO88TPDQ/w-d-xo.html I also made a video on Fatalis hunting sets: th-cam.com/video/04jQJGkeAcM/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps!
it actually was foresight slash (input backwards) but instead of letting character do the counterattack you can cancel into special sheathe or helmbreaker, in this case it was sheathe
As @evalotl said, it's a Foresight Slash canceled midway by a Special Sheathe. You can Foresight backwards in any direction and you can Special Sheathe in any direction, so I used it to reposition and turn around to land Iai Spirit Slash. There are other cancels too, like Foresight into Helm Breaker or Spirit Blade III into Special Sheathe. I cover all of them in my Long Sword guide linked in the description.
The counter starts as soon as you press the button. At 60 fps, Iai Slash has 5 I-frames and 5 counter frames. Iai SPIRIT Slash has 14 I-frames and 12 counter frames. If you need a visualization, check out my Long Sword guide at this time stamp: th-cam.com/video/1iJIDdYsiwk/w-d-xo.html
I hope this channel explodes when Wilds comes out, keep up the good work!
This is minor, but I genuinely love how you edited the button highlights for 3:34, to heavily demonstrate how faster this combo is.
I can't wait for your wilds guides. By far the best weapon guide on TH-cam. Especially showing the button inputs non console specific
Extremely underrated channel. You deserve alot more support!

It's honestly past the time the MH community agree on a universal notation like fighting games.
I used to be terrible with longsword
Then I discovered fade slash.
I used to be terrible with longsword
I still am, but I used to be too
I'll be waiting for your LS guide for Wilds when it comes out! Hope that game makes your channel grow up a lot.

There's another video that he posted about longsword mechanics that covered way more stuffs. It was around 11 months ago. Check it out.

Hey man if i practice LS in world right now would this be usefull for wilds? Instant sub and like bro. Great guide.
Would you mind making a progression guide from a longsword perspective? From MR1 to Fatalis. Armor and weapon guide
I won't be making one in the near future, but I can point you in the right direction!

@Pike_Analysis Ty!
The most important get to use the Foresight Slash, without it LS is useless!
What the hell was that step at 7:16 after iai slash? Didn't look like foresight and you immediately pivoted and got a sheathe?

Meanwhile Im in 3U and huh? That combo is all I have!
I am not able to parry while using iai slash, can you give some tips?

Hey man do you have a Discord channel?
Nope. Community building is a little too much responsibility for me at the moment.😅
