@@JustRuss also, in this game the only ressource investment is on crafting and upgrading items, so if you change equipment, you change build.
The skills mostly come from armor and jewels (thing you can slot in an armor to get a skill)
There's no restrictions on jewels other than the size and number of slots, you can add and remove them freely

Being pretty overwhelmed when you're new to MH is VERY normal. Pick a weapon, go to the training area and have a go at it. Then pick one weapon that you feel good with and go from there. Eventually you'll venture into another weapon once you get the hang of the game and you'll have even more fun then. Happy hunting!

So people say the game is like souls (partially because the original monhun inspired stuff like the HP stamina system in souls games) but while there are some surface level mechanical similarities one of the biggest differences between the games is *monhun rolls have SIGNIFICANTLY fewer i-frames*. Rolling through attacks without a build specifically designed to do that is nearly impossible a lot of the time, and most attacks are not designed to be rolled through, which completely changes the pace of monhun fights. The games are significantly more about repositioning around the monster to avoid getting hit than they are just phasing through moves.

The weapons are truly amazing in this series, and you can freely switch between them as you please. Armor (at least from World onwards) have no limitations on what weapons you can use with them, each armor piece has their own skills, and you can make builds for either general play or for specific weapons. There is nothing stopping you from just maining as many weapons as you want, I personally main 4 weapons, the Charge Blade (my first & favorite), Gunlance (very close 2nd fav), Hunting Horn (symphony of BONK), and Insect Glaive (the Kinsects can be surprisingly cute, and the FF collab brought the Gae Bolg as an IG, and a dragon spirit thingie as a Kinsect).

IMHO the thing about Longsword is it works best with a team of ranged and/or support players around it. If you combine em with a couple of bowgun users with slashing/explosive ammo and a Hunting Horn to buff them, they will just *shred* monsters when used properly.
Personally I'm light bowgun for life. The combination of having access to so much interesting ammo types and pretty high mobility is just too much fun.

In an ideal world the Hammer dude smashes the skull in and the Longsword guy cuts the tail.
In actuality the longsword guy will go for the head and flinch the Hammer dude with each swing basically stunlocking them from doing their big damage combo and robbing them of the KO damage they worked for...
And then Hammer dude gets fed up and yeets the longsword guy with their uppercut until they go somewhere else, where they belong.
A bit overdramaticised, but getting flinched out of the big bonk combo feels really bad, thankfully Hammer got more flinch resistence on its combos in Wilds.

I have over 1k hour and I use every single weapon over 100 hunts, most over 200 (with the exception of Hunting Horn lol)
Try to not limit yourself to one weapon, at least use 2-3 weapon cuz each weapon playstyle is unique and have different advantage against different monster. If you have 2-3 weapon, whenever you meet an opponent that is hard to deal with your main weapon, you can simply go to camp (or cart lol) and switch to your other weapon, this will lessen your frustration and increase the enjoyment of the game significantly.

As a greatsword main, it's something you have to experience to understand. The feeling of perfectly timing an attack to intercept a monster mid-flight with a fully charged true charged slash (the last spinny hit of the main combo) and seeing them stumble on the ground after taking that 2k hit to the face is hard to replicate with other weapons imo. I've spent a good bit of time playing every weapon to get an idea of how they feel (50-100 hunts per weapon) and while the longsword for example has a lot of counters, it's just not the same; it feels more like the game giving you a cool animation for timing something than you going absolutely insano style on a monster.
In preparation for replies: yes you can do the same with weapons like CB with the SAED and I play them pretty often, but there's just something about swinging the big hunk of metal with no additional mechanics that tickles a primal part of my brain.

Each weapon also has its own inside jokes and memes about who mains them.
    Longsword: tripping hazards
Chargeblade: break out the spreadsheet for their combos
Insect glaive: everyone backseating how they should play their weapon.

One thing about the sword and shield (called SnS in the community) is that it has a pretty low barrier of entry but am extremely high skill ceiling . It’s an absolute MONSTER of a weapon in the hands of an experienced SnS user and when you play it correctly you are def not playing it “safe”. You are always in close proximity to the monster basically. So you better know how the monster moves and you better know your i frames.

Switch axe got some counter moves for big defense>offense moments, and is smoother to play also, highly recommend in in Wilds the element discharge moves are siick and now you can down an enemy by meeting their attack with your own counterattack it’s really fun. Learning curve is just learning what the gauges mean and switching modes to charge them respectively, but it *is* a bit slow if the deliberate big hit gameplay doesn’t appeal to you
My main in Worlds was the insect Glaive, but in wilds it was not letting me do the arial combos I was used to way more grounded which, like, whole reason I liked it was the flying so meh

You're not "Vulnerable" with the heavy bowgun. Slap on the shield attachment and increase your guard. You will automatically block every hit coming your way as long as you're not shooting. Just face in the general direction and you're good. It's honestly the most defensive weapon in the game IMO.

I only main Sword and Shield. The blocking and evasion abilities can both be upgraded to high levels, turning you into an absolute tank with absurd speed and dodging capabilities. Furthermore, because of the speed, you can take advantage of a monster’s elemental weakness, dealing absurd damage.

skill ceiling is a bit much since to be considered a master of the longsword you just have to be good with the counter attacks, but other than the timing for counter attacks it's pretty easy to use.

I started with a heavy bowgun guy cuz I didn't want to deal with the range issue, but it was too slow for me and I kept getting bodied, then I tried normal bow. Felt way better but had issue with the damage output. Gave up for a while, tried hammer with Rise. Loved the spinny hammer attack and started having a lot of fun. Rise did have one issue that that some weapon were kinda busted with the new wirebug options. Didn't make Rise bad, but I think a lot of people preffered the methodic flow of world. So I go back to world for the third time. Determined to have fun this time the way I did with Rise. What does every say is the most complicated weapon? Charge Blade. Hell yeah, let's go. Spend a couple hours watching tutorials, hop in, had a blast. Might take a bit to find something that fits you, but it's there.

thing is also with pretty much all the weapons. all of them are fairly easy to get into AND if you put the time in to get good with them they all become basically unstoppable. so there really is no weapon for beginners or veterans they can all be played by all kinds of players so it really is just preference

  • @cokecan6169

Combat is a little slower, less i frames and enemies have active hit boxes that last a long time, and a lot of optimal damage for melee tends to be locked behind longer combos that need big commitment. 10/10

I will say. as a hammer enjoyer such as mystelf....you should definitely give it a try. even if you dont end up using it as a main. the playstyle is so much fun. its a simple moveset generally. but that allows you to focus on your one true goal. dispensing concussions to anything that moves. Im sure you will understand how satisfying bonking monsters can be lol. my main suggestion though....is that "just testing the weapons out" in the practice areas or against starter hunts doesnt exactly do the best job of teaching you how weapons fully work. you definitely caught on to a lot of the gauges and everything that some weapons have, and the game does a very poor job of teaching you what they mean. and you can beat any starter monsters without understanding the mechanics....but some weapons might not feel great if you dont understand them. the longsword has a gauge that you have to level up by doing combos. and might feel underwhelming if you dont figure out how to do it. charge blade being a mechanical nightmare effects wise if you dont figure it out. etc. so dont feel affraid to pull up some guide vids on how to play certain weapons whenever you want to switch around. it takes time but its worth it. Its what made using the bow specifically fun for me at some point when I learned how to actually play it.

So let's just stop this "copy" bullsh*t and enjoy both games that are the rare outliers of today's gaming industry.

One thing about MH you will learn as younplay a weapon armor doesmt have stats like str and sruff just defense which you can upgrade any gear to thenlvl as another. Different gear pieces give diferent skills ans the more skills you have of the same the higher level that skill gets to a cap. So say younplay insect glavie or duel blades that consume stamnia alot you want the skills that help with that etc. Armornis more about what skills they give rather than their stats

Bro friendly stagger is REMOVED from Monster Hunter Wilds!!! So dont worry.Heavy bowgun can shoot nonstop like a machinegun. Also the Dual Blades showcase in this video did not do the weapon any justice at all. Because you can literally fly in the air and spin all over the entire monsters body from head to tail like Levi from attack on titan.
