  • WHAT A BEAUTY!!! The regal fritillary, Speyeria idalia, is a North American favorite and is becoming increasingly difficult to find. My friend that lives in Minnesota found a nice colony of this giant Nymphalid butterfly in a prairie and wanted me to have a pair from this location. In this video, we will show you the art of spreading the wings of a butterfly specimen and show you the glory of this giant beautiful butterfly.
With the right tools, such as insect pins, forceps, spreading board, card stock paper, and a little patience and practice, you will be able to curate a beautiful butterfly collection as well.

Would you mind to share all the tools you have and where to buy them. I’m fascinated to start doing this. I already have a few butterflies.

Good idea. I’ll make a video discussing that

You mentioned severing the tendons, what do you mean by that? Great video!

There are small tendons that attach the wings to the muscular system of the thorax. If you sever those tendons it loosens the wings considerably

Could you sever the tendons with a pin? I don’t have an exacto knife

Where is a good place to put your specimens so pests can't get to them?

Good question. It depends how many you are keeping. Find boxes that are as air tight as possible. I’d suggest looking into insect boxes like Cornell drawers. They are expensive but worth it
