  • Happy #WorldCassowaryDay! Cassowaries play a crucial role in the ecosystem by dispersing seeds for more than 150 species of rainforest trees and plants. These birds are revered throughout their native habitat for their significant contribution to the rainforest, which makes their conservation even more important. Salem and Neville are not just Zoo favorites, but future contributors to the survival of their species, as they are part of the Species Survival Plan, a breeding program to help support the genetic diversity of wildlife in human care.
We’re excited to celebrate our cassowaries with a special series featuring Kirli Saunders, the talented muralist behind our new Australian-and-New Zealand-themed habitat, Down Under. Kirli and the team at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance worked closely with First Nations peoples to inform the art and signage for this immersive experience, which highlights the incredible animals like kangaroos, wallabies, tree kangaroos - and, of course, cassowaries! Stay tuned as we continue to support the conservation of these incredible birds and the habitats they help preserve!
