might be having a go at a bit of decking soon, a bit tricky as it is coming of a raised step in the garden, probably about a four foot drop down to the garden, I should have done the decking from the start instead of expending the path by an extra two slabs width. oh well we live and learn lol
Hi. Yes there are gaps between the boards to allow for any movement. I didn't use spacers or a screw, I just used my eye and adjusted the boards so I didn't have to cut the end board long ways.
Phill Wyatt Outdoors Yes. I only had a few hours here and there to do this. I had to do this over several weekends. I hope all you DIY jobs are going well.
Hello, do you use a drill bit the same diameter as your coach bolt. I. E would you use a m12 drill bit for a m12 bolt? Or use a bigger drill size? Thanks.
electrician154 Yes they are needed. Before I put the noggings in place I put my flat edge over the top of the bearers and they were not level but as soon as I put the noggings in place and then tightened them up all the bears became level. I don’t think the decking boards are strong enough to stop the bearers from twisting.
The deck boards would only provide limited support across the top of the joists - the noggins support the joists from top to bottom which gives a much stronger structure that would resist twisting throughout
@@spencebespokedreams I just did it in word. Its not to scale but just helped to work out how many bearers and at what length I needed. I was also able to email this to my family friend to purchase the items.

cracking job bud. Pat on your back.
how do you fix in the joists and noggins on the two sides where there are bricks, as you can't screw in from the other side?
I did it like this 3:45
Manufacturers say to lay the boards with the groove side down. Why didn't you do that?
You can lay them up or down, there are no rules and it is up to the client or the layer.
@@AngusMcGregor thanks for the reply.
Did you use timber treatment on the cut timbers and bolt holes ? as treated timber isn't 100% through the timber !
You are right, I gave this one an extra coat all over. th-cam.com/video/NPsYMAuuOwQ/w-d-xo.html
should you of not left a small space between the decking boards,i use a screw width as the the boards do swell up etc with water

That looked like it took a good while to do but it looked great in the end.

Alan Reid hi yes use the same size drill bit. You will need to tap the coach bolt in with a hammer.
@@AngusMcGregor thanks Angus. 😁
Great video but paint cut ends with treatment
Yes, good point. I did that here on this build, I actually painted the whole of the frame. th-cam.com/video/NPsYMAuuOwQ/w-d-xo.html
Are noggings needed ? Will all the deck boards screwed down not stop the joists twisting
