  • What about the history of the slingshot? Why does Russia get credit for inventing the slingshot? When and where did it start getting popular again? How did it get so big in China? What will it take to grow this amazing hobby and sport?
A brief history of the slingshot as we know it today:
All slingshots today simply use a frame to hold latex. This did not exist before the invention of vulcanized rubber. Prior to that there was not a slingshot in the sense that we know slingshots today. Before there was vulcanized rubber, there was not rubber that could retract fast enough to launch a projectile. Latex sap without being vulcanized is simply not retractable enough to really provide any power as needed with a slingshot.
Why does Russia get credit for the slingshot? It seems to have originated from a Wikipedia article (it is no longer there). We believe, here at SimpleShot, that no one really has claimed to inventing the slingshot. It is unclear where the slingshot as we know it today truly originated.
Lots of countries would like to claim the title of inventor of the slingshot. We are just glad that it happened somewhere!
When and where did slingshots get popular again? That's an interesting question. We give credit to a potentially surprising source. The accessibility of exercise bands such as Theraband may be the number one factor to creating the resurgence in the popularity of slingshot shooting. Interestingly, Theraband gold is no longer the king of slingshot bands by far, but no one can deny the profound effect that it had on slingshot shooting.
And finally, how did slingshot she didn't get so big in China?
Let's say it right up front: slingshot shooting is huge in China, and you would be hard pressed to find any country in the world doing more for the sport than China. The worlds top shooters are often from China, innovation and slingshots is pouring out of China, and some slingshot products coming from China today are geared toward true slingshot enthusiasts.
This is true despite the fact that our patented and trademarked products have been copied brazenly by some disreputable Chinese manufacturers.
Slingshots are wildly popular in China where most shooting implements are not allowed and the sheer population of China means that there are simply more shooters in China than anywhere else.
We are constantly looking for ways to strengthen the bonds between slingshot shooters worldwide. China has more to offer to the world of slingshots than likely any other country. China is on the front lines of making slingshot shooting a world wide sport, and China is leading the way to getting slingshot shooting into the Olympics!
We look forward to strengthening the worldwide slingshot scene among all countries supporting slingshots.

Nathan, Bill Hayes, Fowler and game keeper John got me into slingshots. But no one comes close to explaining the intricacies and science behind it like Nathan. I'm so grateful to stumble on these folks.

Was popular in the 50s when I was growing up. we used to make them from old blown bicycle tires .cut with scissors and tied to natural fork and rocks for ammo. Pouch always from old shoes.

When I was a kid, my older cousins would shoot their Whamo Slingshots down at the park. It was when a kid could put their their slingshots in the back pocket like "Dennis the Menace". I always wanted to get a wood framed Whamo Slingshot.

You Nathan are a genius! the axiom ocularis has a pretty great pinch grip feeling. But an EXTREMELY comfortable hammer grip, a feature that not many slingshots are able to pull off, so thanks for everything you do I’m a huuuge fan of your slingshots and simpleshot is basically my favorite company.
    Keep it up dude!

Always professional and informative. My first the Whamo in 1967. I also went right to the Wrist Rocket and Barnett and so fourth. For whatever reason in 2011 I decided to design a wooden slingshot and then found joined community in 2013. It is so true, whatever the drive is within some, to experience the flight path, the trajectory of a projectile, placing that projectile on target; it is a powerful desire and so enjoyable with a hand held slingshot frame.

Not to discredit anything said in this video, but im a little surprised there was no mention of Mr Hussy..Many of us used a Slingshot in our childhood, but it was Mr Hussey, that influenced me,that it wasnt something relegated as a childs toy and could be enjoyed by all ages as a serious target and hunting weapon .....Im sure i wasnt the only one influenced by the man..

    • @simpleshot
      @simpleshot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It was a brief history. Mr. Hussey influenced a lot of people, showing them accuracy that was then unthinkable . . .

I question the "Russia" connection. Goodyear patented vulcanized rubber in 1844. Soon after he was making everything he could think of out of it from coats to "rubbers" (rain boots) to mailmen's bags. Wouldn't begin to guess when the first ones were made, but slingshots were known to be used by teen vandals as early as the 1860's. The western expansion required the children to hunt for small game for the table. Those children used "throw sticks" (a non-returning boomerang), bow and arrows, and slingshots, with the occasional particularly accurate rock thrower using just his arm. Firearms stayed with the adults mostly. Sources of rubber for those slingshots was chancy until cars became more prevalent (around the turn of the century), at which time the tire's innertubes provided an easy source of rubber for flat bands. I remember using such to make my slingshots as a child, and I learned it from my grandfather, and he from his father. In poorer regions of the country, and especially during the Great Depression, the slingshot was a "tried and true" game getter utilized by the children of the house to ensure enough food on the table. Sitting birds and rabbits were particularly vulnerable. We used what is now referred to as the butterfly technique. Having a beard now, I hesitate to use that method. The history of slingshots is long, indeed.

Not to mention shooting arrows and bolts out of it for hunting. It's illegal in most places but not in private land! That's what's gotten me into it. I make my own 6 inch bolts that fit any standard arrow head. All I do is find a straight peace of wood make it pretty put in an L7 notch drill a hole in top and add my tip. Fletch with string or duct tape feathers. Just dont shoot your hand.
