What’s crazy is how ugly I thought the Aztec was when it came out. Horrible. But over time and with modern design tastes actually heading in that direction, now when I look at a picture of an Aztec, it isn’t pretty but it doesn’t seem ugly anymore either.

I thought I would hate the Kona and owning one would be soul crushing, but it's just a shockingly competent car. Fast enough in the 1.6T configuration, good amount of interior space, reasonable fuel economy, easy to use infotainment, good tech onboard and a transmission that isn't hateful. It's pretty much perfect for my wife tooling around Mainz and Frankfurt. We even took it on a road trip to Bergamo and...it was comfortable. Considering we got it loaded for 24k Euro, I genuinely cannot complain.

I wish people would wake up and realize turbos suck. put more stress on engine components put more heat in your engine oil something that is bad for your engine. I don't want to hear about warrenty because if you are a person who keeps your car long term, then the warrenty expires. My experience with Hyundai's powertrain warrenty has not been good. Now I know why some people call them stealerships. These guys don't care because they are driving this vehicle for a short time and they want a fun experience nothing more, so they want the damn turbo.

I own a 2020 Kona SEL Plus with AWD and the 2.0 NA engine. It has a 6 speed auto and so far at 36K miles it has had no issues. I bought it new in March of 2020 and the only improvement it needed was a set of new tires. Put a new set of Bridgestone Turranzas on it at 25K because the factory tire was damn near dangerous on snow and ice. 33 MPGs in town with 27 MPGs in the city. The Plus trim has a ton of great options. 4 wheel independent suspension handles well, too.

I had a 2019 first gen Kona 1.6T with the 7 speed ecoshit dct. Enthusiasts love to shit on Hyundai, sometimes deserving, but it was a great and peppy little car. 0-60 in 6.6 per c&d for the fwd model like mine was. $26k otd with a decent stereo, lane keep assist and the best part, the acid/lime green exterior with matching interior accents. Great car for the 2 years and 44k I put on it as a travel nurse during peak covid. Only traded it in after securing an fk8 type r at msrp, but I’m glad to see Hyundai kept, and if anything, really leaned into the funky design.

I recently took a Kona Limited Electric home. I had tried a Honda Prologue, Chevy Blazer and Nissan Ariya. Surprisingly I felt the build quality of the Kona superior. It was quieter at highway speeds and plenty of space. The seats fit like a glove. It was fast (about 6.5sec 0-60) and handled great let alone the supple ride quality. I think Hyundai has a winner. The interior was so intelligently laid out with physical buttons all lit at night.

Because the Koreans have always cut corners on parts/engineering to undercut the Japanese on price. Much like the Chinese are doing in Europe now.
And that 10 year, 100K mile warranty is a marketing gimmick/almost worthless b/c they are well known for making it extremely difficult to get approved for any warranty claims that their customers have. Just go read the Hyundai/Kia forums or Consumer Reports or Edmunds. And almost every owner has nothing but terrible things to say about the Hyundai/Kia dealer experience if you have to deal with repairs or warranty work or even the sales experience. Hopefully they do a better job with their PHEVs and EVs but I'm not holding my breath.
And the Koreans don't even really beat Toyota, Honda or Mazda that much on price anymore so I would take a Corolla Cross or CX-30 over this all day, every day.

For 223, Kia are literally number 3 behind Lexus and Genesis - Hyundai are 8th - both are WAY above Honda and Mazda - and of course the Germans who only have 1 brand that meets the industry average, with the rest being right down the bottom with other bottom feeders like Ford and Tesla.

Physical buttons for climate and radio, changing media input and bringing up map/navigation, touch screen inputs for other things you don't need to access all the time that you mostly just set and leave be. They actually attempted to integrate the screens into the dash design instead of the taped on iPad look.

They make this as a hybrid in other countries but they didn’t bring it to the US. Which is a shame, especially since Hyundai has basically gotten rid of all of their small hybrids now apart from the Elantra Hybrid. Triangular styling rules!
Triangular geometries offer inherent advantages in automotive design due to their structural stability, efficiency, and aerodynamic properties. Triangles distribute forces evenly, enhancing stability and safety in vehicle components like suspension systems and chassis frames. Their efficient use of materials reduces weight, improving fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Additionally, triangular shapes minimize air resistance, enhancing aerodynamics for better vehicle performance.
    Well Done.

Dozens and dozens of cars - Nissans, Fords, Stellantis, Toyota, VW, Hyundai, GMs, hell I had a few Audi's and BMWs. The ONLY one to leave me stranded was a Hyundai. Sure, I've had flat tires, infotainment glitches, cars with questionable mechanical soundness, but nothing that made me have to call and report in the motor locked up. Hell, I had an Altima once that was 3 years old with 75k on it - didn't leave me stranded.
15 miles after pickup. It started knocking, clattering almost immediately after getting on the highway right by the rental office. Pulled over and called them for a replacement. I can personally comment on Hyundai/Kia's honoring of their warranty: they will fight you tooth and nail to not pay out. their dealerships, at least within an 8 hour drive of where my car's engine literally punched the bottom of my hood, were all backlogged nearly a year, they dont offer loaners, they dont compensate for rentals until AFTER the repair is complete, and to be compensated for a rental takes months. So essentially, Hyundai/Kia knowingly sold millions of cars with a design fault and then fought to refuse to pay it out, to then require you to essentially have to buy a whole new vehicle while yours is being repaired (one dealership actually suggested i just buy another car while mine sits in their lot for almost a year before they even looked at it).
What I hate is: both companies knock it out of the park on styling and overall efficiency but I'll never give them another cent after fighting them nearly a year just be reimbursed for an engine they knew had issues. If i laid out everything that happened over the course of a year I could likely make a 30min video of just reading out my notes i started keeping about month 3 of my fight with them.

They're very [popular in the used market for anyone who's looking for a practical and affordable AWD hatchback. Design is better this time around, but the fact remains that H&K are terrible at engine design. This as an EV is much better but there are signs that there are design issues there as well (not the battery or motor but the gear bearings lubing). As always the customers will bear the brunt on a vehicle that depreciates faster than an NFT.
It's too bad because I really wanted a Kona N or EV. But the former has sus reliability and the latter is using software updates to reduce torque on the electric motor to mask the gearing issue and give it room from the base Ioniq5, against which it has a significant torque advantage.

    • @MylesV
      @MylesV ปีที่แล้ว

The updated Kona EV uses a completely different powertrain design than the old one to (hopefully) resolve the powertrain issues the previous one had. The N doesn’t have suspect reliability either. People are basically just abusing them daily.

What's wrong with the 1.6L Turbo engine? It's a fantastic engine that has been proven very reliable since it launched. Lemme guess, you'll make a joke about something that literally has nothing to do with the 1.6L Turbo. I'll eat my popcorn and wait.

@@wolfshanze5980 Nah I can share some stuff as I owned one for 4 years, 80k miles and ran mods on it: intercooloer, tune, intake, suspension, etc.
What I learned early on is that it is hard on oil, and finding shavings here and there in the pan is "normal".
I learned the entusiast market is tiny, and while support is great, many local shops won't touch it with a 10 ft pole, leaving you with dealerships and their maligned service staff. Look for the master techs, they've likely moved to greener pastures as corporate have made it challenging to want to work there. I have more on this but want to limit the dump.
At the end of the day it is slower than a Mazda3, even the new prius, and especially older Honda's with a turbo setup that only guarantees to use more gas, generate more heat and create more issues down the line.
I loved my Forte5 but I had a lfp failure that i resolved myself, then a hpfp failure (again I resolved myself), then part fo the harness fried leaving me without a radiator fan that lead to an overheat I luckily caught (this was warrantied but they tried to deny me for aftermarket intake and springs).
So why did I get rid of mine? AC compressor failed and dealer raked me over the coals on the bill but gave me an refurb, not oem unit.
Afterwards I noticed fuel trims we getting really out of wack, indicating a vaccuum leak no dealer could find and no shop wanted to touch.
And this is with the 1.6T which is better than their 2.0 which is majorly maligned to the point where tech's hate them as well.
      How's the popcorn?

Drove the previous gen and hated the DCT and my head was tickling the roof. At least it appears they fixed those things.

I love the sounds of the wind and leaves in the background, it makes the video feel a bit spooky.

"Absurd Styling" is absolutely spot-on! There must be something in the water, in S. Korea...

Styling, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. It doesn't make the car more or less reliable, more or less fast, more or less comfortable... the styling literally has no effect on the car AT ALL. What one person may see as ugly, another may think is the best ever. Let people judge for themselves. People bought the Nissan Cube for crying out loud. You can only speak of what styling you like, not someone else.

Hyundai: single handedely making the HR-V look reasonably handsome.

I think the HR-V DOES look reasonably handsome. It'd be held in higher regard if it didn't have a paralytic lack of power. That thing would be transformed by a turbo.
