  • Learn how to quickly check your cutlass bearing. A worn cutlass bearing can cause vibration and if left can cause shaft damage. Chris shows you how to quickly check the bearing whenever the boat is out of the water.

Simple but effective. I just tried to move by hand. The leverage is needed to truly check for play.

I liked your video very much! Thank you! I especially remember the "clunking" sound our boat would make when we shifted gears... if I remember correctly(?) I think I even remember "feeling" the clunking in the shift lever? You'll laugh at this story... The first and only time that I ever ordered a "cutless bearing" was in 1980, I was just an ignorant, young girl back then... and our 83' boat was far away in the Caribbean... so I wasn't able to see what one of these bearings looked like when I phoned in the order... I had to drive to Tampa from West Palm to pick it up and then air-ship it out to the boat, but when I finally saw it, my face fell... I didn't see any "bearing", what I saw was a simple brass tube with black rubber inside with grooves in the rubber. I told the man that handed it to me, "No, I ordered a BEARING! You know, the thing with little ball bearings in it!" All the men behind the counter laughed and assured me over and over again that this was exactly what my mechanic wanted and needed. "Trust us!" Was I ever relieved when word got back to me that it was a perfect fit!

If you can see the Zinc Anode on the body of the boat you can normally see the erosion of the Zinc. If you cannot see the Anode, its best to check them at a maximum of 2 years but better every year. Again this depends of what type of hull your boat is made of and how thick your Anode is.
