Early E90 Headlights Were Junk! - BMW E90 Headlight Repair DIY

  • Please check out www.oembimmerparts.com if you're looking for bulbs or ignitors for your BMW.
    The wiring in the E90 headlights was pretty crappy and seems to deteriorate over time. In my case, this caused my ignitor to short out and then burn out so I had to replace it. The previous owner thought it was the bulb and he changed it but it turns out that bulb didn't match the OEM bulb anyway so I had to change both of those as well. Additionally, I fixed the bad wiring by adding some heat shrink connectors in some cases and using liquid electrical tape in others. I wouldn't normally use that but in this case, I was in a hurry as I've been having some issues with my E46 and needed to get the E90 into service so I could swap cars. The E46 is having alternator problems, in case anyone is curious. There will be a video on that soon.

    Can you imagine what the dealer would have charged for this repair. If you own an older BMW you better be able to do most repairs yourself. It’s great you do these DIY’s.

    Hey 50s Kid… Your videos helped me a lot through the years while I was working on my E46… From vanos removal/repair, rear diff swap, etc… Welp I gave my little brother my E46 after I graduated college and bought a mustang GT500… However, I missed my BMW so I just picked up a bargain E90 and now I’m starting this journey with you all over… Thanks for making great vids😅💯

    Just had the ballast go out on my e82. I also noticed the insulation on some of the wires going to the h7s crumbling, but there seems to be no issues. At least on the 1er you can just peel back the wheel liner and replace the ballast without taking the whole headlight out!

    I’ve come across this issue in headlights on a Volvo S80 as well. The more I handled the wires to change the hid bulb, the more they crumbled.
    Painful.

    FYI BMW and Mer/Bz used a biodegradable covering in their wiring so that at the end of the lofe of a car 30+ yrs the land fills would not be filled with unusable metals but they didn't account for engine heat so it's a design flaw with no recalled ever issued.

  • @MrPanaramuh
    @MrPanaramuh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This problem is common due to BMW's usage of biodegradable wiring insulation. It's a real damn hassle, and I did this repair to mine which looked like someone had already been in there and did a half-assed job trying to fix it.

    I have the exact same issue on my E90 right now. Figured it was the ballast and I just ordered a new one... but I'm thinking now I have the same issue as you.

      @@dflex4180 Where do you get aftermarket headlights with HID & headlight turning? LED's are a downgrade imo.

    Sorry to always be the one with corrections, but the igniter is the thing that sits on the back of the bulb... The part you were replacing is the inverter or driver (or ballast, but that's technically incorrect as well). It takes 12 volts from the car and steps it up to 90v. The igniter creates a 22kv pulse to initially ignite the bulb, and it's integrated into the bulb on these headlights. Although, on some versions it can separate from the bulb.

    Wow - your not kidding in the vid title - what a piece of over complicated junk! That wiring is inexcusable.
    Made me laugh when you said "one wire - simpler than the previous model' - sure hope so - think your going to be taking these off a lot!!!!

    First! Thanks for the great video! Tried oembimmerparts but they don't support any 7 series older than an E38. I own an E32. Seriously? Shutting out owners of older BMWs is their business model? No thank you.
