I'd stick with the smaller device, personally. However since I want to use my cycling computer on multiple bikes, the trail forks integration in the Garmin 530 is too important to switch to wahoo. I also am fine giving up a bit of a better UI experience for the extra customization in the Garmin ecosystem.
I have the bolt 1st gen which is very simple to use, I love the wifi connection that uploads when I get home without having to connect to my phone. The Roam is going on the list for Santa.
Here's an idea for a function of the compass: when standing still, or starting a ride, make the map point in the direction your wahoo (and this your bike) is pointing. No more riding 20 metres only to find out it's the other direction your supposed to go...
Came here to say this! This is the most annoying thing about the current generation of Wahoo devices. You can wiggle your handlebars all day long but the map doesn’t rotate. To help in that first few minutes off the train wondering how to get on the start of the route would be perfect.
Or, if paired with a speed sensor on your wheel, it could make off-the-grid navigation possible. Should the comrate shoot the gps satellites or something :P
That's exactly what I want, my bolt made me mad every time when I want to check my route and the map is pointing in the wrong direction, I bet EVERY SINGLE BOLT USER has experienced this sh1t.
I had a Bolt V1 and it was honestly all the GPS I needed after being frustrated with the complexity of Garmin. Tried a Roam v1 and although I never thought I needed a bigger screen and better mapping I really appreciated it so much that I upgraded to one. This computer is definitely a evolution and they seem to have fixed the small issues, like the buttons. Still all the GPS that most riders would ever need and far far simpler to setup and use than other brands. Good price too
The screen on the Roam ISN'T a whole lot bigger than the Bolt screen, because the bevels around the screen are huge. The usable screen area is 320x240 on the Bolt vs 400x240 on the Roam. Same exact width -- just a bit more height.
I've had both and I think that the larger roam is better due to my failing eyesight ! I think that wahoo could have made the screen a bit larger as there's quite a bit of border to it, they may have missed a trick there.
One idea more for using compass. Wahoo app gets current weather and wind speed / direction from a global forecast service. Then unit uses compass and calculates windspeed and direction compared to your cycling direction (and perhaps also a speed). So you can easily see when riding against the wind or enjoying tailwind (or fighting with crosswind).

I have used both and love the roam, I travel for work and love the maps on the roam. I'm definitely frustrated that I just purchased one 3 months ago, and now they release a 2.0!
That's how I felt after I purchased a black and white bolt only to have the new color one come out months later. Also my side buttons are starting to fall off but want to wait in case they release a v3 bolt soon that has sold of these features like the blood glucose since I am diabetic that would be nice. Only recently started being able to see it on my phone so that's still a huge improvement over years back
I realize this is an ad and not a review, but I'm confused why they didn't include a roam vs roam 2.0 comparison. Maybe GCN will do that in the review? Makes me think there may not be all too much different other than storage (which would be nice). I just got my Roam in June and I love it. I'm glad I'm not missing out on too much with the newer version. However, usb-c would have been a nice feature.

I'm super happy with my Roam, after having the Elemnt for a few years. It retains a larger screen without it being toooo big, it's "find route" and "re-routing" feature is excellent. Perfect for on and off-road riding.
Fascinated to learn that you can pair a Libre sensor with it to see your blood glucose level. Can you do this on the Bolt 2.0? As a type 1 diabetic this would be so useful. I used to use Libre sensors but now use Medtronic G3 sensors as they speak to my insulin pump. Wonder if they could be paired with Bolt 2 or Roam 2??
I had both the Bolt and the Roam. The one major flaw with Wahoo is in their map displays. They do not include street names on the map. So, when you are navigating without an active route for turn-by-turn directions, you can’t look at the map to find a familiar street name. It annoyed me so much that I switched back to a garmin 830. It is awesome and I love the touch screen.
This is specifically the reason why I changed from Wahoo to Hammerhead. Dispite the Karoo2 not having a companion app. Its way easier to use when I am riding because of the touch screen and navigation is excellent.
I sold my Garmin 1030 last year and bought the Bolt V2. The Garmin is soo complicated to use and set it up. I couldn't sync a new route onto the unit or modify the route when I had no WIFI. With the Wahoo you can adjust the route with your phone and bang you continue on the revised route. With the Garmin you should be able to communicate with bluetooth, but it doesn't work 50% of the time. Also the display of the Wahoo is soo much better in the sunlight. The screen from the Wahoo has no reflection at all, the Garmin 1030 was sometimes not readable at all.
The Roam is an excellent GPS device, I had a Bolt but unfortunately it was attatched to my Bianchi the day that was stolen. I realised there was only £50 difference for the Roam when I came to get a new GPS device, a fairly easy decision to upgrade right there! Both were faultless but I do prefer the bigger screen.
I'm still using the original Elemnt. I've been waiting on the Roam v2. I need the larger screen on the Roam due to my vision prescription. I want to remain with the Wahoo ecosystem but I'm not sure if I should spend the money (retiree fixed income) to upgrade. The battery in my Elemnt is still working great. This was a good video. Thank you.
I'm using the first generation of the ROAM and I'm quite happy with it. No major issues at all. The new features won't make me think about an upgrade for now. It's nice to see, that the tech is driven further though.

Totally agree. The thick bezel make the wahoo device look old & outdated .. Unfortunately Wahoo are constantly a few steps behind their competitors for tech updates & design .. sad but true!
Does the new ROAM support Garmin Varia Vision (the discontinued heads-up like display)? The newer Garmin Edge devices do not, unfortunately, for those of us who still use Varia Vision.
So I’m on the old bolt & an upgrade is due so what should I go for the bolt v2 at £235 or the roam v1 for £170 ? Pro cons for both, the many colours and climb feature on the new boot looks good but the roam is cheaper and larger screen 🤔
I have the old Roam but I’m not sure I would move up to the new one. Unless there is someway for it to talk with the Garmin connect app. I do like the bigger screen and more colors though.
Currently looking into this system simply because of how well it pairs with a Bike Radar with having the lights outside of the radar unit for indication.
What can i say , i am using an element bolt2.0 very happy , is my first compiuter and i love it . but if i can have the lucky of inning a new Roam it ill be magical. ;) thanks guys for all yours video
if this is for long distance bike computer, they should add dedicated battery charged by waterproof connection & solar charging and touch screen for map viewing.
Hello you all, I'm desperately trying to find for a few weeks now if the Summit Segments function is also available on the Bolt V2? If you guys have an answer it would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
Possible future feature - crash detection, and If the rider doesn’t respond to a prompt, emergency services can be contacted through the connection to the phone app! Similar to what the Apple Watch can do
Weird question maybe, but I bet the folks at GCN have all the big brands of bike computers around the office. Would it be possible to do a video (or article) with a comparison of functionality when you use them: "stand alone" (no PC/smartphone connection), "no external applications" (no smartphone app or PC software, just USB storage to pull/push files to the device) "no account" (so smartphone apps or applications on PC are allowed but no account needed), and full "I'll install apps/software and sign up & link all my accounts to get stuff functioning" mode Reason being that I'm currently on an 10 yr old device, for which there are (obviously) no android/IOS apps, and as I don't run windows (their software doesn't work on windows 10/11 anyway afaik) so back in the day I had to write my own tool to analyze the memory when it's connected through USB and get actual route data off the device. And while that's still working, I would like to have a device that actually allows me to navigate, without having to jump through hoops, and just have the ability to copy gpx files from and to the device, and install map/firmware updates through the device itself. It would be interesting to see which devices are still (mostly) usable without their proprietary software, and to see what devices will actually keep working if the company behind it ever decides to shut their servers down or no support apps anymore. And for folks like me, a rating for ease of battery replacement for each brand/device would be a nice bonus 😁
@@sabamacx Actually I've asked a few parties to do it, but most (that responded to it) came back with that they don't have the knowlegde or funding (and access to hardware) to actually test (or request that info from manufacturers) to get a reasonable amount of devices included. It's a hard topic to make a video about I think, but even if you don't want to do pure stats, video's you can include most of this info in future video's when new products like this come out, by just coming up with some basic uses like navigation, logging, external sensor data gathering etc and displaying a simple table showing which of those things work with just the device and a generic computer without wahoo/garmin etc software and which of those things will be limited or not usable without that software. I'm just throwing something out there, and it doesn't have to be done in exactly that format. But pointing them towards info that some people might consider interesting when they're buying a 200-600 euro device won't do harm. (I hope 😁)
Whilst sponsored by Wahoo and producing these informercials on their behalf, GCN cannot provide an unbiased comparison of bike computers across multiple manufacturers.
@@stilerone it's basically summing up facts that anyone can check on their device, so any bias or non truths would probably get called out by owners of the devices right away. It's not like performance comparisons that you can cherry pick. Can you get gpx files from it like it's an USB storage device Y/N Can you copy routes to the device without external software? Y/N Can sensors be paired and data retrieved in an non proprietary format without external software Y/N Can map/firmware updates be installed without external software. Y/N Not really info that you can give biased info about imho. Only thing might be defining navigation in a part a and b for importing routes through usb storage and gpx files, and selecting a point on the map to navigate to on the device itself as those serve different purposes, but I think that with them and some community input you could come up with basic functionality in a table to show on screen while talking about the device. It's not that much work to make some simple points like that a standard thing for those devices.
The summit segments feature sounds like a software update. Will it be added to the existing Roam V1 too. Or is this feature unique to the version 2 devices? Anyone know?
Wahoo head units are compatible with Garmin's Varia. almost all cycling head units are compatible with accessories using ANT+ and Bluetooth. I use the Wahoo app on my android phone and it connects nicely with my Garmin Heart Rate Monitor and Garmin Cadence sensor. I use the "Ride with GPS" android app for navigating and its integration with my Garmin Varia. Rode today with my Pixel 6pro phone mounted on a quadlock, running Both Ridewith GPS and Wahoo apps, safely listening to tunes on Spotify with my Shokz bone-conducting headphones!
Hi there. Question, maybe you know because is hard to find. What bike computer have 99999 mile/km ODM. Total all together history of my distance. I will be going for bike trip for 2.5 years and I want to record my distance and for sure will be more than 25000km. Thank you for any help
How do we see the number and summary of climbs, as shown at 8:10? I've seen another video that mentioned something like this, but I can't find it on my device or the Wahoo website... **EDIT** Oh, DC Rainmaker says they are coming, hopefully just weeks away.
A few months ago I decided to get the Bolt V2 versus the Roam due to memory and color(s). But eye-sight is an issue, my sunglasses have a prescription on them but for looking far, making the head unit hard to read. So the new Roam may end up on my birthday wish list!
1:18 basically the only thing that makes a diference, size! then does it matter. up to you. I'm happy on my bolt 2.0, but I don't mind winning a survey.
I'd rather have a roam BUT I have a bolt v1 and love it just fine. Does everything I need it to do and more and u can occasionally find it for cheap on amazon (mine was 150 freedom dollars fwiw)
Dual Band GPS? So hopefully it works this time. Can't believe that my iPhone has my location within a second, but a dedicated GPS device from Wahoo takes minutes to find a very weak signal.
I have a roam and a boltv2. They're both fine. The real problem with them is that they have plastic tabs that break on the mount. The mount should be the point of failure, not the tabs and you shouldn't have to buy a third party dogear solution to fix them. Wahoo fixed my roam but I had to buy a boltv2 to cover some races.
Im gonna stick with my Garmin 1040 solar. I only set it up once so doing so on my cellphone isn't a big bonus but 40 hour battery life, same 64gb memory and touchscreen are. I used the 820 from 2012 and the touchscreen never let me down.
I wish wahoo would make a more affordable commuter friendly computer maybe with touchscreen and more simple, I love my Bolt but it's overkill for my 2 mile daily work commute.
I’m a type 1 diabetic that uses a permanently attached blood glucose sensor so really interesting to hear about that sensor integration as currently I have to pause and whip out my phone to take a reading… I guess that’s not available on the bolt?
Hi , at the moment I own a 1st generation of Wahoo Roam and will be nice to have new one and use for my across the Europe bike trip and test this boy.....
I have the original Roam, and the biggest problem with it is that if you need to upload a route/track on the go, it just takes forever! I create my routes in Komoot and synching them to the Roam via the home Wifi is fast. But, if you try to load a track whilst on the road, you need lot of patience!! Mine takes more than 6 MINUTES! The new Komoot track actually appears in the App on the phone within seconds, and then the transfer to the device take more than 6 minutes.... unacceptable in my opinion....so I've gone back to the good old phone navigation.
@@bripayton3723 I recommend to get a 1030. The upgrades from 1030 to 1030plus or even 1040 or 1040 Solar are just not worth the money. 1030 lasts forever and gives you all data u could ever need. I do rides of 230km+ and run it with maps open and high brightness display. Always enough battery left.
The configuration via phone is *much* better on the Roam than Garmin's clunky menus, but Garmin packs a lot more features, including Connect IQ which allows 3rd party apps to expand your device even more, and the ability to control lights. The Edge 530/830 has a marginally larger screen (wider, but shorter). The display setup is basically personal preference between the two.
better features? upcoming hill / terrain details, log road condition, show current incline (spot the firmware engineer...) replay mode for gear index (too far!)
Gutted. I held out for the Roam v2 for nearly 12 months until I couldnt resist and bought the original one only 4 months ago. Wish companies like Wahoo, Garmin etc would do some sort of trade in / upgrade scheme.
I made the mistake of taking this channels advice and bought a wahoo oh Boi how much do I regret it. Im still trying to sell it and I bough a Garmin 530 edge that is marvelous
More of an evolution really, the Bolt v1 continues to do most of the same features, barring route search on device. Climb Pro feature is a bit late, and honestly something I never bothered using as you need to preload the route for it to work.
As a long term Wahoo user, I was really looking forwards to pulling the trigger and getting a new Roam to replace my old ELEMNT work-horse. But after this "new" release..! Seriously is that it..? Sorry Wahoo - the Karoo 2 just looks and feels like a much better proposition for the same money.
I’d pick neither and use my phone on a quadlock mount because you need your phone anyway and your phone does way more. Take AirPods too so when I’m riding I can change what I’m listening to or view Strava or whatever I want on my phone screen
You didn’t talk about battery life… or I didn’t hear it. Wahoo says you can get 17 hours on the roam, but I was on a long ride and it died far from home. Luckily I had a usb battery. They should have extended the battery life instead of adding unused hardware.😮
Don't like to complain . Love the show n all ... but you said you were going to tell me everything I need to know . So I listened with baited wallet but you didn't even vaguely mention in passing the most important thing . Price ? even roughly ...
Well a compas could be cool if you got lost on a bike ride and your bike computer cant change the route for you it might just say head north to get back on track and maybe just shows you a compas so you now where to go Just had some struggle with this on a bike packing trip after an overnighter in the woods because I went a little further then my end/start point to find a nice place for the night and my phone (I dont have a bike computer at the moment) just told me to head west to get to the starting point so yeah maybe thats an aplictaion where this could be used even though it is rather simple. Well relating to my bikepacking adventures etc. I guess I would go for the roam even though I like to ride for performance but I wont buy two headunits if I only have an entry level road bike (trek domane al2 disc not the fastest but I still somke most people out on the road cuz they are just damn fucking slow lol)
Someday, there will be a mapping bike computer that will mark roads that aren't acceptable for bike riding. Who wants to ride on a four-lane road, with no shoulder, that has a 100 kph speed limit?

Hello you all, I'm desperately trying to find for a few weeks now if the Summit Segments function is also available on the Bolt V2? If you guys have an answer it would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
I’m looking to get my first bike gps what is the best for all of you with bike gps experiences
Thank god i just go for a ride
Possible future feature - crash detection, and If the rider doesn’t respond to a prompt, emergency services can be contacted through the connection to the phone app! Similar to what the Apple Watch can do
Well Route planning is must, but does it do turn by turn directions also? Can anyone confirm this.
Thanks Ollie...I am a Garmin guy !
Weird question maybe, but I bet the folks at GCN have all the big brands of bike computers around the office.
Would it be possible to do a video (or article) with a comparison of functionality when you use them:
"stand alone" (no PC/smartphone connection),
"no external applications" (no smartphone app or PC software, just USB storage to pull/push files to the device)
"no account" (so smartphone apps or applications on PC are allowed but no account needed),
and full "I'll install apps/software and sign up & link all my accounts to get stuff functioning" mode
Reason being that I'm currently on an 10 yr old device, for which there are (obviously) no android/IOS apps, and as I don't run windows (their software doesn't work on windows 10/11 anyway afaik) so back in the day I had to write my own tool to analyze the memory when it's connected through USB and get actual route data off the device.
Can you get gpx files from it like it's an USB storage device Y/N
Can you copy routes to the device without external software? Y/N
Can sensors be paired and data retrieved in an non proprietary format without external software Y/N
Can map/firmware updates be installed without external software. Y/N
Not really info that you can give biased info about imho.
Dc rainmaker does reviews.. I usually watch gcn for the hosts.. featured products are mostly infomercials
The summit segments feature sounds like a software update. Will it be added to the existing Roam V1 too. Or is this feature unique to the version 2 devices? Anyone know?
I’m not impressed. They need to get rid of those awful side bezels
Is it possible to connect the Roam with Garmin accessories like Cardio belt and Varia radar?
I would 100% go with the roam, love roaming around new tracks and roads
... have to get to all the good out of thr way coffee shops
It's what rides are ALL about!
1:18 basically the only thing that makes a diference, size! then does it matter. up to you. I'm happy on my bolt 2.0, but I don't mind winning a survey.
Very helpful
Thx👍
I'd rather have a roam BUT I have a bolt v1 and love it just fine. Does everything I need it to do and more and u can occasionally find it for cheap on amazon (mine was 150 freedom dollars fwiw)
Yeah, it seems Wahoo's V2 line up is a hardware bump and added features the Garman and hammerhead has had before. Wahoo has fallen behind.
Dual Band GPS? So hopefully it works this time. Can't believe that my iPhone has my location within a second, but a dedicated GPS device from Wahoo takes minutes to find a very weak signal.
Well then use your iPhone, see how long the battery lasts
@@cappaculla I'm allowed to complain about a product I paid for with my own money, you know?
I have a roam and a boltv2. They're both fine. The real problem with them is that they have plastic tabs that break on the mount. The mount should be the point of failure, not the tabs and you shouldn't have to buy a third party dogear solution to fix them. Wahoo fixed my roam but I had to buy a boltv2 to cover some races.
Will the Summit Segments Feature also come to the Bolt v2? That's the only feature I miss on my Bolt.
yeah, missing that too! Hope it comes to the Bolt V2 after a firmware update...
GPLama/Shane Miller mentioned in his video that it will!
Im gonna stick with my Garmin 1040 solar. I only set it up once so doing so on my cellphone isn't a big bonus but 40 hour battery life, same 64gb memory and touchscreen are. I used the 820 from 2012 and the touchscreen never let me down.
Do you ride longer than 24 hours often?
@@elkellenhabla About a dozen times a year.
@@julianallen515 Strava or it didn’t happen 😂
I wish wahoo would make a more affordable commuter friendly computer maybe with touchscreen and more simple, I love my Bolt but it's overkill for my 2 mile daily work commute.
Consider an Apple Watch?
Coospo are doing wonders in the budget end of the market
I’m a type 1 diabetic that uses a permanently attached blood glucose sensor so really interesting to hear about that sensor integration as currently I have to pause and whip out my phone to take a reading… I guess that’s not available on the bolt?
Great video! 👍
The real question for me is, how does it compare to the newer Garmin 500 & 1000 series?
Have got the original Bolt but at 58 my eyes are getting a bit dodge so I'm thinking of getting the larger Roam.
Hi , at the moment I own a 1st generation of Wahoo Roam and will be nice to have new one and use for my across the Europe bike trip and test this boy.....
Ride across Europe sounds amazing! We hope you enjoy it!
@@gcntech Thanks guys!!! GCN inspired me about cycling adventures and I'm big fan of the GNC + All the best and keep doing this Epic rides!
What is a Roam 1.0 worth as trade-in for a Roam 2.0?
I have the original Roam, and the biggest problem with it is that if you need to upload a route/track on the go, it just takes forever!
I create my routes in Komoot and synching them to the Roam via the home Wifi is fast.
But, if you try to load a track whilst on the road, you need lot of patience!! Mine takes more than 6 MINUTES!
The new Komoot track actually appears in the App on the phone within seconds, and then the transfer to the device take more than 6 minutes.... unacceptable in my opinion....so I've gone back to the good old phone navigation.
Why can't they just add a headlamp in the larger models !
There goes your battery life...
@@henseleric if i have a battery mounted on my bike, i would like for it to do more. i'm ok charging ONE device more often.
That would no doubt require a massive device to hide the battery...
Why is the border so think around the edges. Make the screen come to the edge of the unit. That said. I’m happy with my v2 bolt.
Any better than Garmin ?
Obviously not. They are waaaay behind the Garmin. Just look how clonky they still look
@@patrickeigenmann138 thanks I'm looking to update my very old Garmin
@@bripayton3723 I recommend to get a 1030. The upgrades from 1030 to 1030plus or even 1040 or 1040 Solar are just not worth the money. 1030 lasts forever and gives you all data u could ever need. I do rides of 230km+ and run it with maps open and high brightness display. Always enough battery left.
@@patrickeigenmann138 cool, it's got to be better than my very old 520
The configuration via phone is *much* better on the Roam than Garmin's clunky menus, but Garmin packs a lot more features, including Connect IQ which allows 3rd party apps to expand your device even more, and the ability to control lights. The Edge 530/830 has a marginally larger screen (wider, but shorter). The display setup is basically personal preference between the two.
Nice. I need one
i just had my ROAM warrantied xD . the timing.
I have the room end I love it
I do lots of gravel ride end onder the trees is not so accurate
I think to do the update to the 2.0
better features? upcoming hill / terrain details, log road condition, show current incline (spot the firmware engineer...) replay mode for gear index (too far!)
How do you delete routes that you no longer need.
that bezel hard to believe it's 2022
Wahoo is the best!!!
I think the roam for the battery life and bigger screen
Im still on my polar cs500 😅
Gutted. I held out for the Roam v2 for nearly 12 months until I couldnt resist and bought the original one only 4 months ago. Wish companies like Wahoo, Garmin etc would do some sort of trade in / upgrade scheme.
Pretty sure the hammerhead karoo 2 still allows trade in at your local sram dealership.
A gyroscope could measure road tilt
They added Garmin's Climb Pro
I’d pick neither and use my phone on a quadlock mount because you need your phone anyway and your phone does way more. Take AirPods too so when I’m riding I can change what I’m listening to or view Strava or whatever I want on my phone screen
Same! Why get a dedicated head unit for your bike when we've already got phones with more functionality?
Just got my roam still trying to figure how to use it lol
Bolt V2 is enough , i dont see any reason to upgrade into roam v2
Almost nothing new compare to the old version. Even aesthetically the same. I ll use my old roam for another 4 years :)
You didn’t talk about battery life… or I didn’t hear it. Wahoo says you can get 17 hours on the roam, but I was on a long ride and it died far from home. Luckily I had a usb battery. They should have extended the battery life instead of adding unused hardware.😮
I don't understand how they still have a huge bezel. It eats too much screen space.
Suddenly the Wahoo Roam that I have had for three-years seems inadequate.
My Garmin touch screen works fine in the rain ☔ so you're talking bullets
Don't like to complain . Love the show n all ... but you said you were going to tell me everything I need to know . So I listened with baited wallet but you didn't even vaguely mention in passing the most important thing . Price ? even roughly ...
MSRP is 399.-- €. Ridiculous for that ugly piece
I bought Roam 2days ago. lol. Its like a tertis. Back to 2000yrs again.😂 My wife was laughing from me alot
it appears to be playing catch up to garmin
Good thing I just bought the v1 about a month ago……
Well a compas could be cool if you got lost on a bike ride and your bike computer cant change the route for you it might just say head north to get back on track and maybe just shows you a compas so you now where to go
Just had some struggle with this on a bike packing trip after an overnighter in the woods because I went a little further then my end/start point to find a nice place for the night and my phone (I dont have a bike computer at the moment) just told me to head west to get to the starting point so yeah maybe thats an aplictaion where this could be used even though it is rather simple.
