A harpsichordist with a complete understanding of his instrument's capabilities! Simple registrations let the music and sparkling interpretation shine. He knows that the silences are as important as the sounds.

Now THIS is how you gin up a ragtime arrangement on harpsichord. He knows the limitations of the plucked instrument and makes this arrangement sound extra special at the same time. I love the subtle changes, melody alterations, and sneaky 7th chords everywhere. Bravo.

I suddenly want to own a harpsichord. Not that I'd ever be able to play stride bass...but just to be able to say to my friends, "This is one of the coolest instruments ever and it was invented many centuries ago and I own one." :)

Just goes to show the ol' harpsichord is a capable instrument even with more jazzy tunes like the Charleston and the classic ragtime tune, the Entertainer. The purists might be seething, but I think it's amazing, and the sound is really crisp and clear.
It's certainly brought a smile to my face, and you have a sincere thank you for sharing this with everyone!

I saw and listened Don Angle more than 25 years ago, within the William Dowd/Von Nagel Paris' workshop, playing a lot of "rag time" pieces on the last French double produced by this workshop. It was a real pleasure, and he dedicated to me two from its vinyl recordings I have still there. Nice time of a good "concert dans les copeaux" !

This is taking a leaf from the book of the great organist E. Power Biggs, who recorded a vinyl LP of Joplin in the 1970s, played on a magnificent pedal harpsichord. Interestingly the LP did not include The Entertainer, but it is on a later CD re-release (on Sony). This is a freer interpretation, of course, but not necessarily any the worse for that. Very enjoyable!
