- In this video, Joel discusses three different ways to build a Commander deck for Alela, Artful Provocateur: Strong, Fun and Mean. Starting things off in the Strong category, Joel will be leaning into an Enchantment and Artifact EDH build. For Fun, the focus will be Faerie Tribal, and finally, in the Mean category, Stax, with powerful cards like Ghostly Prison, nothing can go wrong. Depending on how you want to build the deck, Alela can be strong, fun or downright mean. Figure out your playgroup, so you can tune your deck for success!
About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses different ways to build different Commander decks. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

Amazing take on one of my favorite commanders. I have a mix of strong and mean. With the magus of the moat out plus archetype of imagination you can almost guarantee lock out most combats. Also add in mycosynth lattice and darksteel forge for protection.

I went with a mix of fun and strong. Flying tribal with anthems to pump my flyers, and as many artifact or enchantment creatures that also fly. Takes off pretty fast!

The video I knew I needed. "Strong" and "fun" are quite expensive for me, so I would go with "mean".
That said, I will buy the Faeries Scheme Brawl Deck, add zero cost artifacts, ninjas and maybe a nice enchantment creature or two.

What's more fun than just faeries? Faeries and eggs. Lots of eggs. Reduce the cost of your artifacts and go haywire, take 15 minute turns and dig through half your deck, spawning 30+ faeries in a turn.

First thing that came to my mind is thopter spy network.
An enchantment that spits out thopter artifacts on your upkeep as long as you control an artifact. And when an artifact creature you control deals damage, draw a card.
Not sure if that triggers every time an artifact creature attacks or if it only triggers once no matter how many attack. Either way, that would be pretty coo.

I’d love to see your take on an Anafenza, The Foremost list. I’m currently building my own list and it’d be interesting to get your take on it as I could see a lot of different ways of doing this. Mine includes the Living Plane /Elesh Norn combo with lots of tutors and reanimation. Not to mention just good stuff like Loyal Retainers, Recruiter of the Guard, Mr T’s Protection etc etc

i went with an artifact route and include most cards that make artifacts into creatures, see dance of the mance, karn(creature), march of the machines etc, the deck is obsiosly called be our guest

Alela's equipment... give her first strike / double strike and this deck goes off especially when you get her big enough to toxic deluge/meat hook and leave her the only one standing. equip robe of stars and phase her out and blow everything up its incredibly strong I win through commander damage very often! Also bouncing artifacts like mana rocks with teleportation circle gives a free fairy every turn.
you get nothing from teleportation circle since you didn't cast that artifact again, it just leaves and re-enters, casting is defined when you you pay the cost of the spell and cast it (even if its zero)
I have three different combos that can play off of each other and i can return those combos into my hand from the graveyard or to my library.
Which combos are they?

I've been enjoying alela eggs storm, all kind of small artifacts that eventually cost 0, and if you can get to cast urza the game turns almost unfair!

Hi, Bruno, Jake here. Yes Covid-19 is affecting pretty much everything at this point. The fact that my (America's) Economy is in the shitter, is definitely affecting my cards as well. I have my collection separated into different entities based on format, and they are all taking a dip. People just don't have expendable income right now. And you know what, I will do a video about it. I will do it today.
