The eggs thing is a bit more complicated than they make it seem. A big part of the reason we don't allow egg washing is to ensure good animal care (you can't hide any evidence of poor conditions). What it also does is leave the cuticle intact (the coating around the egg that makes them waterproof (yes, despite what you are told in the US, eggs are actually waterproof). In an attempt to make up for this, US eggs get coated in an oil, but it doesn't really do the same job. This is also why you have to refrigerate your eggs.
So far as salmonella goes, that is on the outside of the egg to start with. By washing, you make the egg porous, which is where the part about allowing contamination in comes from. Again, you have to make sure your eggs are cooked because of that salmonella risk. In the UK, we have a set of requirements that farmers must follow to be able to mark their eggs with the "Red Lion Mark". This is a quality assurance scheme that covers animal welfare, and conditions etc. We have mandatory flock vaccination, so your risk of salmonella is greatly reduced. But where a diseased animal does manage to slip through, that salmonella is on the outside of the shell. So as long as you practice safe handling, it really isn't an issue we have to worry about these days. But you do have to handle eggs carefully, and practice good hygiene to ensure your safety.
This is all very similar to why we don't allow chicken to be bleached. Bleaching chicken doesn't mean poor conditions and bad hygiene practices; but it does allow people to hide poor conditions and bad hygiene practices when they do exist.

You explained it perfecty. I only have to add: In Europe we don't refrigerate eggs during transport because we don't wash the shell but USA have to do it because they wash it. If the temperature during transport it's below a specific mark in USA the eggs can get a bacterial transfer. Europe thinks it's more secure our way because it's more difficult (and have more ecological impact washing and refrigerating the eggs) to maintaing the eggs perfectly refrigerated during transport. The eggs are on a shell in the supermarket and we only refrigerate them at home.

@@vanesag.9863 Not sure about home refrigeration advice in other European countries; in the UK most people just keep them in a dark cupboard or pantry. Keeping them in the fridge destroys the flavour and affects coming/baking with them. There are a few people in the UK that seem to have picked up the habit of home refrigeration, and I'm putting that down to the influence of US TV/Film.

@@vanesag.9863- No commercial kitchen in the UK would refrigerate eggs and you shouldn't at home either. A couple of reasons: non-washed eggs have a 'much' longer shelf life, when stored in a cool, dark place (i.e. a pantry - think of Downton Abbey - LOL). Refrigerating can encourage 'egg sweating' (water droplets or condensation forming on the egg shells), not good! And finally, many recipes require cool to room temperature eggs to get the best results, especially in baking. People will often say 'our fridge came with an egg rack..?' - That often means it was an American or similar import brand; because egg racks are not supplied (as a standard in the UK), so as not to encourage refrigeration.
      EDIT: For spelling error.

When the London Eye was opened in 2000 it was the tallest wheel in the world, since then 3 other wheels have surpassed that, but the London Eye is still the tallest cantilevered wheel in the world as it is only supported on one side whereas the other 3 are supported on an A-frame. But a cantilevered wheel is a lot more technical to achieve.
British stamps are also stuck on the top right of the envelope and don't forget we invented the postage system. And the first stamp was called the Penny Black and not the Black Penny as this guy said. It was called that as the stamp used to cost a Penny and it was black. We don't have our name on our stamps because we were the first to send postage stamps so we didn't need to.
The London Underground subway system is the oldest subway system in the world and Britain also invented trains.

In the USA, eggs are washed because salmonella can occur there due to the husbandry conditions. Once eggs are washed, the protective layer is gone and the pores are damaged. Therefore, from this point on, the eggs must be permanently stored in the refrigerator. In no other country are eggs sold refrigerated, it is simply not necessary if they are not washed.

The State of Hawaii encompasses nearly (as in, not all of) the entire archipelago known as the Hawaiian Islands. The J.K.Rowling not-cryptic pen-name came into existence to make an "illusion". In english it is impossible to recognize who is "he" and who is "she" just by the surname. And there is no first name, just an initial. But it would look strange to have there just one initial, so she borrowd the name of her grandmother Kathleen to make the other initial (because she doesn't have a middle name). So there is just a surname and initials which leaves a lots of unanswered question about the identity of the author. It was an intention by the publisher to hide it on the book cover. It seems kind of riddiculous now, when she is famous and known. But back then when the first book was being prepared... Well, some just thought that it would be better for the book if it is not obvious that author is a woman. It was just a trick to support the selling of a book in fear it may flop. Again, it seems riddiculous now, but back then she was trying to offer her first book to a publisher for a year and she was refused by twelve publishers.
So this is the strange history of a strange pen-name.

J.K.Rowling. Rowling is pronounced Ro to rhyme with Go not to rhyme with how.
Welsh words which start with Ll are not pronounced with the usual L sound. It is pronounced Ccla (but more Welsh-sounding😊)
Not the Black Penny stamp !! - instead the Penny Black.
The large bell named "Big Ben" in the Elizabeth Tower, was cast in the same factory (in Whitechaple, East London) as Anerica's "Liberty Bell" (& both bells gave the same crack in them which affects / lowers their timbre).

6:00 fun fact, anything found on the London Underground is taken to the Lost Property office, and is stored for up to 3 months; anything which has not been claimed within 3 months is disposed of, donated, or sold. So TfL [Transport for London, the Tube operator] does in fact make money selling things like umbrellas.
The latest public data covers 2020/21, when 114,858 items total were found including 368 laptops, 9,407 phones, 17,945 bags, 26,822 books, and 11,120 items of clothing among others; from those, 22,089 items were returned. There was also £126,102 in cash found in those items, and a further £163,858 was raised from the sale of anything not claimed. So yea it all adds up. The super crazy thing is that these figures are low because of the reduced tourist numbers from the period thanks to Covid restrictions. In 2018/19 by comparison 333,921 items were found, almost 3x as many.

Queen Elizabeth's mother was called Elizabeth - therefore the elder was called the queen mother -.Her mother in law was called Mary - Queen Mary - mother to King George VI. Parents of the current Queen. - Who sadly passed away. Our kings alternate between Christian and Frederik. Our next king will be Frederik X, and his son will be Chistian XI. My uncle was named Frederik - and my brother Christian!

The official language of England from 1066 to 1362 was not French. The King and Nobles spoke French; the rest of us peasants spoke Middle English the name scholars give to the language that evolved into modern English. The King and the Nobles spoke French because they were French, either born in France directly or descended from the French who conquered England. They stopped speaking French after they began to lose most of their land in France to the French King, even then it took multiple generations.
The French word influence on English are typically Political or Culinary; and are higher status words than the Anglo-Saxon equivalents. This is because the elite spoke French so politics was in French and they ate a Banquet of Cuisine, such as Beef, Pork and Mutton. Most peasants seldom ate meat at all and if they did it was likely a Chicken. Which is why the Animal and its meat use the same word still, but we don't say we're eating Cow, Pig or Sheep. The middle English speakers only looked after the animals for their lords, they didn't get to eat the meat. Academic words also are likely to have a French influence, but I think that came much later
The 30% of words being of French origin (or Latin) is true, but it doesn't necessary mean that 30% of spoken English is French. Some words are used more frequently than others, I eat dinner every day but I don't think I've ever had a Banquet.

The police have no powers of arrest in the Houses (plural) of Parliament. It's a Royal Palace. The only three people who can arrest there are the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod (in the Lords); the Serjeant-at-Arms (in the Commons), and the King. They can be assisted by the doorkeepers, badge messengers, and Yeomen of the Guard, all of who are recruited from military veterans having attained the rank of at least Warrant Officer 2nd Class.

What major historical event happened at the beginning of the 11th century?
    The battle of hastings.
Englands crown was taken by a French bastard called William the bastard. William then became known as William the Conqueror.
As far as I understand it, William then turned , quite literally, almost.ALL of Englands ancient families; landowners /gentry/Counts off their property , and installed his own men in those positions instead.
French was now the language of the royal court and of the newly installed aristocracy; "everyone who was anyone" was a Frenchman.
The rest still spoke English and English, despite the odds, prevailed.

The Statute forbidding Bearing of Armour or Coming Armed to Parliament Act 1313 was enacted in 1313 during the reign of Edward II of England. It states "that in all Parliaments, Treatises and other Assemblies, which should be made in the Realm of England for ever, that every Man shall come without all Force and Armour". Edward's enactment of the 1313 statute represented his fifth attempt to prevent the nobles' from using the threat of armed force as a means of coercing parliament.

Eggs in the uk are not washed and don’t need to be cooled, eggs can also be white in the UK, their colour is based on the breed of chicken.
The village in wales is not technically named that but is ultimately accepted it is.
Umbrellas are caught up in doors of carriages due to the size and gauge of trains being small. Fun fact: most of the London Underground is north side of the Thames because south is mostly clay and wasn’t suitable for building and digging through at the time.
Technically Berners lee didn’t invent the internet, if I’m not mistaken it networked computers were originally by (D)ARPA called ARPANET, Lee pioneered hypertext linking.
Scottish people are called Scots, individual people you can add the suffix -man-woman
Fun fact, on the royal coat or arms the unicorn is shackled to represent English dominance over scotland. Also, Scotland has it own variation of the royal coat of arms with the lion and unicorn swapped sides with a different motto.
UK court rooms generally do not have a judge with a gavel either
Uber is now allowed in cities, it was opposed by black cab drivers of London initially.

That 'fact' about upside-down stamps is NOT true. It does not matter so long as there IS one.
That translation of Llanfairpwll. . . . is not quite right. It is fine as far as it goes but the END of it (after the St Tisilio) is ". . .and the red cave,"
The first stamp was the Penny Black, NOT the black penny as stated. And as UK was the forst country to use pre-paid stamps, that is the reason UK does not need its name on them.
It is also illegal to vacuum your house on a Sunday.

It was and still is considered treason to hang the union flag (union jack) upside down, it's still a crime in the uk and commonwealth. countries, not that you'd be hung drawn and quartered today. It means you are insulting the monarch. However hanging it upside down is also a sign of distress.

  • @ryanodriscoll
    @ryanodriscoll ปีที่แล้ว

The stamps thing is infuriating. The monarchy do not care about the orientation of stamps. They would look weird upside down but that's about it. And the first stamp was the Penny Black, not the black penny.
The armour thing, I believe, was a law basically to stop MPs (nobles at the time) resisting being called by the monarch. It is not a security thing, which is probably covered by a host of other laws designed to stop armed nutters wandering the building and putting people in danger.
It remains on the books, probably because it is not worth the effort of repealing. I'm no legal expert, but I should think that any prosecution for breaching that law would be unlikely to meet the requirement of being "in the public interest" to pursue. But until someone does it, we will never know.

"Are you all right?" as a greeting to customers in shops etc by people in the service industry in the UK has come about due to the poor standard of training of staff in the UK. In America, where the staff are dependent often on substantial tip to supplement their earnings, such sloppy customer service does not happen.
If a shopkeeper etc in Britain greets me with "are you alright?" I either do not reply to their question or I might say "Yes I think I am alright, but you will have to ask someone who knows me for their opinion". This usually results in the shopkeeper, bar steward etc giving me a quizzical look. Not having this greeting in the US is something you definitely do better than the Brits.
