    I really enjoy these types of series where you have to recover the gold from something strange before you can refine it! It’s almost like watching a suspense thriller!

    If you ever end up refining material like this again, I think you'd find it a lot easier to take the ash from the first incineration and smelt it in a furnace with soda ash, silica, and borax, then pour it into a cone mold and chip out the metal cone to refine. You wouldn't even need a collector metal with this amount of gold and silver already present. This would take care of all the carbon gunk you had to treat with piranha solution and filter. Jason at mbmmllc does a really good job of showing that process - it's pretty straightforward and I've been able to do it on a small scale.

    After you initially incinerate the material you got from the jeweler, would it be effective to just treat that ash the same way you would gold ore? Like - put it in a crucible with soda ash, silica and borax, add some collector metal (maybe lead or copper), put it in a furnace at 2000F , pour into a cone mold, and bust the metal tip off the cone once it cools...? Might be a way to not have to fiddle with such a volume of crap in your beakers, running through your filters etc. etc.

    The VND filter is a great addition to your filming kit, but I believe that your iPhone is compensating when you adjust the light. When you decreased the amount of light coming through there were noticeable artifacts and sound/fuzz in your video. It would work best if you were using an app where you can lock the frame rate to let’s say 1/60th of a second. And you can adjust or decrease the light that way. Now I might be wrong, this might be what you’re already doing! But it appears that the iPhones built in camera software is turning up the gain/ISO to compensate for the reduction in light and it’s not necessarily giving the intended effect. You might need an app where you can film in full manual mode where you can set the ISO and shutter speed.

    • @mrdrgonzo
      @mrdrgonzo ปีที่แล้ว

      I came to write the same thing, variable nd filters are really only used for really sunny conditions, think of it like sunglasses for your camera. Ideally you need more light for you videos as I’ve noticed earlier on the frame rate seemed pretty slow which I think may have also been the camera trying to compensate for the low light too. Great series though, didn’t have a clue about what you were doing but came away very informed!

    You could do with a large volume centrifuge. In the lab I work in, if I have solids that block a filter I will centrifuge it first. This radically pushes down the solid into a compact piece. I don't work with such volumes though. I've seen large volume centrifuges and they're big scary things. If something goes wrong in a centrifuge though you know about it.

    I didn’t do the recovery from solution, I was just cleaning gold and crap covered stuff. The solution got sold and I would get a check for the gold minus refining costs.

    It's cool to see you thermo/chemically reduce 4 filters full of solids down to just one.

    that's still just over 2 ounces so you were to far off in you guesstimate. the carpet was fun for us to watch but I'm sure it was a huge pain to do, thank you for for doing it and sharing it with us.

    I watched every video of this series and I must say that I was not disappointed. I'm not sure I would go through that much work for that yield, but great work nonetheless.

    Saw the propellers floating in the batch at the beginning! At least it looked like it pooled up instead of distributing...

    Man that one was a lot of work. When I saw you taking the carpet out, I could only thing that this is going to take some elbow grease.

    Fantastic 4 parter but I bet the jeweller wasn't happy with half the payout he was expecting. I can see where you are coming from when you said you'd rather recover for yourself. I can see how people would be thinking you had them over. But C'mon 5k from a square yard of carpet brilliant work.👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👍🏻
