You could use Machinegun if you had stats for the Puckle Gun. Not sure how cover works, but if there are woods between the targets, even if in the open the Infantry should have gotten light cover. if the Cavalry were on the edge of the woods then there would be no obstructions to provide cover for a group in the open.
