Hi folks, in this video I am drawing a fantasy map in the size required for a novel or book. This is the full process using A5 paper and just a couple of pens.
Equipment in this video:
(UK affliliate links - please use these to help support the channel - it does not cost you a penny more but I get a very small commission)
Sakura Micron 05, 01 and 005 pens - amzn.to/3j9fyDZ
Faber Castell mechanical pencil - amzn.to/3uX2bJK
Faber Castell dust free eraser - amzn.to/3V4u2Cm
Dingbats Sketchbook - amzn.to/3HLMtZD
Filming Equipment
Desk phone mount for filming - amzn.to/3j852Nf
Overhead camera - amzn.to/3FX4GBS
Main Camera - amzn.to/3FXT2H9
Lens - amzn.to/3BFD7dI
Microphone - amzn.to/3HFuweW
iPad - amzn.to/3uYuFCR
Apple Pencil - amzn.to/3FWHcNr
Desk Lamp - amzn.to/3FUikWy
Saying that, any pen and piece of paper is suitable for drawing a fantasy map. Ideally not lined paper, but if that's all you have, use it and get started!
I do occassionally take on commissions. If you want me to draw for you, email me on mapsbyowen@gmail.com - I am very selective about the commissions I take on, so please don't be offended if I say no.

What do you guys think of this style of video? Do you prefer it when I talk over the process? I wanted to show the techniques in real time but I'd be really interested in what you think. Thanks!
I really appreciate seeing the full process! Whether you voice over or chat as you go or not, I'm happy either way :D
@@katiekofemug thank you Katie, I really appreciate your response!
I know this is kind of an old post, but I'm just getting into making maps for my players and your channel has been a wild inspiration. You draw exactly like how I hope to one day. Your mountains and forest videos are a cornerstone of my base. I personally prefer when you talk it through. You have such a calming voice and I love the thought process. Missing that 02 Pen!
Happy to see you return! As for the format, I don't mind it. I like it as much as the others. For me specifically, so long both the process are clear enough (not too sped up) and we get to see the final result I'm happy.
Thank you, that’s really good to know. Makes sense that the process and end result are the important parts! Cheers 😊
Dang this is so nice!!
It's been a while. Great to see you back!
Thank you! It’s great to be back
You have a talent. The maps remind me of those from maps old RPG games.
Thanks mate!
Very nice work and I really enjoy your content. The only thing that throws me off at first was the scale of the trees but on A5 that would be a task. Your lettering at that scale is impressive to work that small then your took it into digital my hats off to your skills. I hope you have a border video up.
Thank you for sharing thy knowledge!
Thank you for watching! What did you think of a style with no talking?
@@MapsbyOwen I thought it was pretty good. I know there’s other videos on your channel explaining how you draw in this style, so it’s perfectly fine to have a different video format just drawing. With that, the time stamps are also helpful in that vein.
Side note. You’re videos helped me begin drawing maps at the start of this year! While I’m not the best, it’s fun to at least understand the process
Amazing work !
Really love the pace of the video.
Cheers from France.
Thanks so much! I wasn't sure the pace was right, so that's really nice to hear. :)
Love this upload! Welcome back!!
Thanks!
You’re an excellent cartographer, but I have one piece of advice, make some parts of the coastline smooth, yours are a little too consistently rough, but other than that one tiny thing, this map is incredible
Excelente video. 👌
How to draw a river and road sir?
There are a few rivers on this one, just using a bendy line. As for roads, I use a dotted line generally, or dashed line.
i think there's too many cuts of the inking process. it's one of the most satisfying things to me
Thanks for commenting. I want to show some of the inking in real time, so do you think 30 seconds or so of a technique in real time, followed by the rest at high speed, rather than a cut? Otherwise we’re talking videos several hours long 🤢
@@MapsbyOwen I think that the first option of a few secondes of real time inking then high speed is pretty good. Some youtubers do the same things and use thoses real time moment to explain what they do, their techniques and ideas, and it give dynamic to the video when the rest is at higher speed.
Also, some parts could be faster without alot of people being bother by the acceleration, like the corrections in Photoshop.
