I think the people most likely to be enticed by the program would be more likely to live in cities like Clarksburg, Charleston or Martinsburg, where connectivity is comparable with just about anywhere else, at least one interstate highway feeds through and a commercial airport is within an hour drive. Some will want to live in the sticks, but that comes at the cost of certain lifestyle encumberments.

    • @daggy174

At this point, West Virginia is just trying to bring a few thousand people into the state economy as it hemorrhages residents. People who work remotely tend to work in lucrative tech/finance/consulting positions and their state income/sales tax proceeds could go a long way toward helping others in the state.
This is something the state should have undertaken YEARS ago. It could have been something to stem the current of West Virginians streaming out-of-state, but now it's a desperation move. The stakes are much, much higher now. I hope it works..

I am black and from this state not by choice but my parents both moved here in college and never left. However, the state was getting better but has now fallen off. I hate seeing so many bad comments about my state. There are great and wonderful people here but it is a dying economy. It’s a beautiful state it is. There’s not much culture or diversity in the state for people of color. Jobs are here but probably not jobs people want. I have found on my hunt for a new job that the better jobs with better pay mostly require experience to some degree and a higher education degree. This state could do better with infrastructure yes and could do more to keep young adults in the state. I also work remotely now and it has been better for me. However, there’s still more that needs to be done. It’s not the most appealing state, no. I admit some areas are better to be than others for someone of color but do not be afraid to travel here or travel through. For the most part everyone keeps to themselves and they won’t bother you if you don’t bother them.

I grew up in a large, upper middle class family in the northern panhandle (Wheeling). It was genuinely a really good childhood and while Wheeling is by no means a big city, it’s not a tiny place either, it has a lot, good community, it’s beautiful, and it’s an hour from Pittsburgh and two from Columbus. Many of the neighborhoods are full of 100 year old Victorian homes and I lots of kids to play with and really amazing schools. My public high school genuinely was one of the best high schools with incredible opportunities and facilities.
And I say all this from my West Virginia University campus. Im living in Morgantown now. It’s a beautiful and great area as well. I love WVU, and I can’t begin to act like this state sucks.
But while there are these great things, I see the limited opportunities. I see that as a future teacher I will make very little. There is * a lot * of poverty here. I grew up in an area of WV with much less poverty than say, southern WV, but it’s still everywhere. There is a culture of racism and bigotry greater here than other areas of the country. It’s not a perfect place. Is it a shut hole like many people claim? No. It’s not. There’s a lot of nuance to WV. And I would like to see it improve.

@@kets4443 it’s very cheap here. Can get a very nice apartment for well under 1000. Even under 700. I am currently living in Wheeling again, but probably am going to move because I simply prefer city life. But it’s not inherently because of Wheelings faults. I love the homes in Wheeling, it has plenty of amenities and is close to Pittsburgh. There are also many very nice/ cute areas. It’s definitely not perfect tho. I’m glad to see many improvements to it tho over recent years.

Lol that would have to mean Manchin would need to stop distracting methods to point the American public that his daughter, who he "Aunt Becky"'d to a degree 3x as bad as "Aunt Becky" did to her child (see: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia_University_M.B.A._controversy), buying her the position of CEO of the American pharmaceutical company who is the leading manufacturer of name brand hydroxychloroquin in form of Plaquenil. The company is Mylan.
And she was the same Mylan CEO who ran the cost up for epi pens 1300% over night a couple years ago and giving herself a 5 digit pay raise and left people dead from anaphylaxis...aka the main concern for severe complications of the COVID19 vaccines.
And then he would have to address the fact that his daughter "retired" two months ago while not having someone replace her as CEO. Then have to face the fact that Mylan announced last week that it was closing all locations in WV and PA, leaving tens of thousands of Americans unemployed over night, and moving all operations overseas.
Yet, NO ONE is reporting on that.
Manchin's only concerned about distraction from the fact that he and his Mylan CEO daughter killed tens of thousands of wv jobs and moved overseas, after making bank off the back of hydroxychloroquin.

We have buildings, cities, new housing, apartment complexes, bike trails, Uber, and even Bird scooters! We are not just sitting in poverty waiting for the “new city folk” to move in to save us. We have the infrastructure- good schools, wealthy banks, lavish resorts with golf and skiing, excellent hospitals, doctors, and dentists! Most of the problems that WV has isn’t related to a refusal to work it’s due to industry leaving (i.e. Coal)and toxic jobs (i.e. McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, and gambling) moving in. Tell a coal miner he’s refusing to work and I bet u will be spitting up teeth 🦷. Another Scooby do mystery solved.

It’s actually a double edged sword. It is a great time to move to WV or a cheaper state but eventually, salaries will lower. Example: An accounting firm will not pay you 6 figures as a tax associate in nyc if you end up relocating in Kentucky. There will be a correction in salaries. What you think you may end up saving in taxes, there will be a loss in salaries. Google already announced they will cut salaries to your real standard of living based on where you live which makes sense. You won’t pay a software engineer in New Delhi India the same as someone in the US even tho the company is only located in the US. It’s not fair to the company.

I was born in KY but my parents moved to Indiana when I was 3 years old in search of a better life. Meaning employment opportunities! Of course 85% of my family still live in KY with the rest in TN. I joked with my dad saying you left KY looking for work and I wanna go back to get out of work! I'm coming up on my retirement so I was looking for a place to live where my retirement would stretch even further. TN and WV being 2 other states I was looking at. I love how beautiful all 3 States are and wasn't sure how WV took to outsiders. I know KY can be funny like that but I have family ties there. Now if everyone moves to WV... That might not be as desirable financially for me?

It is clear to me that a lot of you either don't understand or just don't like country people. Just remember this the citizens of WV open their arms to people who want to retire here in our bueatifiul state and fit in. But we do not want those who criticize our way of life and tell those worn out old WV jokes. We have heard them all. We are kind, friendly people but we believe in our way of life which includes God, family, freedom, love of country, police, military, our guns and our flag. We are not crazy racist people we treat everyone with respect when they show it to us. If you don't like us drive around our state or straight through it.
