The powerful Allegro Assai and an great beautiful Andante Molto make a lasting impression in this overall very fine symphony. What a great pity the other six are lost. Thank You !

Perhaps someday Ovid's other symphonies will be found... Until then, we can rejoice in the fact that much of this prolific composer's music has been recorded.

Um bom compositor, foi eclipsado por Mozart, mas em sua época foi admirado. Seus concertos para contrabaixo são muito requisitados.

Dittersdorf was not eclipsed by Mozart in his own time, the only contemporary composer who was eclipsing everyone was Haydn; after his death, Mozart’s star did indeed rise, to the degree that he is arguably the most famous and popular composer of all today.
However, you cannot anachronistically backdate that fame and popularity to a time when it simply did not exist; three examples will suffice:
      i) Mozart had just two of his symphonies published in Vienna during his lifetime; Haydn had dozens published.
ii) In Paris, between 1781 and 1790, Marc Vignal has found that of the 335 concerts given by the Concert spirituel, Haydn’s music appeared in 191, and that from 1788, there were two and sometimes three Haydn symphonies in every concert.
Mozart during this time featured about a dozen times.
iii) Haydn was shocked to find that in London between 1791 and 1795, that he found Mozarts music almost unknown.
Mozart today eclipses just about every other composer, but he didn’t live long enough to see it himself.

Ok, so maybe Dittersdorf's music is not quite as "fancy" as Mozart's, but I find it's very well-constructed!
