Thanks for the reply Bro and JMO - Bending over doing hand drill and bow drill compresses the diaphragm and wears a person out faster . A nifty method is waist high with the hearth wood on a tree branch held down with a loop of cordage . Foot goes through the cordage loop and holds down the hearth .
This method keeps one out of the snow and mud and I often keep the birds nest material below the hearth which eliminates transferring the ember .
Have a great week gentlemen and thanks again . Lefty Cat

Dave, always love coffee with you guys!!! ☕️☕️☕️ Love that Nick is getting less camera shy, boy I tell you, he is a young Dave!
Nick, I really hope you are going to continue this tradition of woodsman knowledge. I know it is a sacrifice of time for all it entails, but to your dad’s credit, it’s a hobby he loves and thousands of people learn from him things that are gradually disappearing from common knowledge amongst everyday people.

David I love seeing you & Nick in the woods together. Those are priceless times w/your boy. These are the times he will remember w/you.
I miss the times when me & my youngest daughter went on are camping trips right before school would start. It was just me & her doing a catch, clean, & cook. She still talks about it to this day.
For 20 years we would take the kids camping every weekend. Play in the water durning the day & fishing @ night till dawn. Those we're the good old days.
Now my son, 27, wants to go camping doing what we did for years. But are camper is in need of some love. Roof leaks like a 20yr hose. Going to have to take everything out & start @ the floor & work are way up.
We gots to have A/C in are old age to be able to get out of the sun & sleep. Plus he's got a new son we have to protect now. Oh he's a cutie & I can't wait to get him on the tube & pull him around on the water. It will be old memories coming together w/new memories. I can't wait.
Well you still got it on making a drill set. Your not to old. Your 2 yrs younger then me. And I'm not old yet @ all.
Keep having fun in the woods as long as you can w/Nick. Take care, be safe,

Also the details of cleaning the stick and type wood and carving method. You guys rock! Keep it up. Will share with MY son as well.

Dave what you said about packs is true...for civilian hiking backpacks. The ALICE kidney pad was never designed to sit on the hips. The pack was part of a system for the military that included a hip/pistol belt and suspenders with butt pack etc. The pack was designed to ride high above the belt, web gear and clear the magazine pouches, butt pack, firstaid kits and everything else carried on the hips. I have two ALICE packs too. I use a longer DEI frame for my Large pack that brings the belt lower so it truly is in a position to ride on the hips with a MOLLE belt and shoulder straps. Bears the weight much better. A huge improvement over the ALICE frame. Love your videos still.
