  • "Dodeydra: A Home in the Forest" is a documentary that explores the rich history of Dodeydra, a 239-year-old monastery situated atop a hill overlooking Thimphu Valley. Initially established by His Holiness the thirteenth Je Khenpo Kyabje Yonten Thaye in 1779, and later expanded by the 18th Druk Desi Jigme Singye, the monastery serves as the residence for 142 monks dedicated to the study of Buddhist Philosophy. In 1996, it was elevated to a Buddhist Institute through the efforts of His Majesty the 4th Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, and the late 68th Je Khenpo Tenzin Dhendup.
The name 'Dodeydra,' meaning "the cave of sutra," finds its origin in the discovery of the Tripitaka (Buddhist Scripture) Do-Dey Kelzang by Bhutanese hermits Dorji Ralpa and Jomo Lodroe Zangmo. The documentary delves into the significance of the Tsuglakhang, a three-storied monastery housing sacred objects such as the statues of Zhabdrung Phuensum Tshogpa and the naturally occurring face of Dorji Phagmo. The paintings on the walls, created by His Holiness the 18th Je Khenpo Kyabje Jamyang Gyaltsen in the 18th century, add to the historical value.
The middle floor of the monastery showcases statues of Buddha Shakyamuni and other revered figures, with an intriguing account explaining why Buddha Shakyamuni wears a crown, a rarity in most monasteries. The documentary further explores tales surrounding the shedding of tears by a painting of Chenrizig upon the passing of Kyabje Jamyang Gyaltshen and the auspicious mountain shape seen by Kyabje Yonten Thaye, inspiring the construction of the monastery.
Additional temples, including Zimchung Gongma and Lhakhang Sarp, built by eminent figures like H.H. Kyabje Jamyang Gyeltshen and H.H Kyabje Pema Zangpo, are highlighted. These temples house sacred objects, statues of Buddhas, and hold stories of significance, such as the extraordinary healing associated with the shrine of Maha Kali. The documentary unfolds the layers of history, spirituality, and unique tales that distinguish Dodeydra from other monastic institutions.
