Man this episode always gets me. One of the most like realistic self-reflection while having a breakdown scenes in any medium I've seen. The voice acting really sells the anguish he's inflicting upon himself. I remember at that age having so many breakdowns with the exact same rhetoric that Subaru has, taking some kernel of truth and using it as condemnation of your entire character. Painting yourself as a villain in some desperate attempt to rationalize why bad things have happened to you is a real relatable one, which in his case is especially a strong need since he's got to try and rationalize why god itself seems to be comically dedicated to crushing his attempts at making things right. Fortunately for him he had some external force to push back against his self-hate, because despite his flaws, he really is a nice guy who wants to see those he cares about be happy and the universe has decided to just put up spitefully high roadblocks to such a life. I really love this show's embracing of the "ugly cry" cause goddamn are they good at selling the humanity.
Every time I'm just like "man, Subaru really deserves a proper therapy course and someone to tell him he's doing a damn good job considering". Unfortunately, medieval settings aren't exactly known for having the best mental health programs lol
actually...she does, everytime he says he is this and that she says no your this and that, what about subaru i know who does this and that, its mirror to how subaru was treating Emilia, if Emilia says shes this and that, subaru would of just been NO your this person and that person, but if seen season 2 Subaru calls out on emilia about who she is what she does and her mistakes but even so he forgives her and will still love her anyway. Subaru was basically looking into a Mirror with Rem on how he actually treated Emilia but even so he still did it in the novels until Emilia told him to stop doing that. Only person that can honestly change him for the better is Emilia because person Rem saw was a Subaru trying to accomplish something to keep spending time with Emilia, get to know her more. Rem pushed him towards Emilia, but Subaru problems can only be resolved through Emilia and same with Emilia's problems as it was shown in the anime when came to Emilia, and Subaru in the novels ( they removed a critical scene with subaru and emilia talking before Otto) but message got through with Otto about not asking and believing in anyone
@peppermint3808 I was with you untill the end of your comment. Totally agree with the pedestal mirror reflection thing. Wasn't sure how I felt about parts of this episode cuz that can be as damaging as it is encouraging. Especially for Subaru. That's just alot of pressure I'm not sure he would realistically need. I try to view this as if it was an actual person. You don't drop huge expectations on people going through trauma. Especially when those expecting make them face that trauma unnecessarily. But i dont think Emilia can change him. Not TRULY. Only Subaru can truly do that for himself. This author seems smart enough to do that much. On the superficial level she can change him (very surface level things. Like being a catalyst or being support) and that works both ways. I would also argue Subaru changes Emilia much more than she changes him.( again though, surface level) Or even rem changes him. Honestly Emilia is kind of a blank slate on purpose. Very all over the place. Except her token kindness she has no real strong opinions, ideals or really anything. She's always felt extremely maluable in reaction to Subaru in my opinion. Like a child. She's kind of a dude in the wisdom department. And wisdom is directly related to change.
Hey man, don’t worry. We all cried. It’s surprising how an episode just of two ppl talking can be so good. There will be more tears in the future I feel, and I’m hyped to see it lol
The "I love Emilia" line always sets people off, but I get it. She was his first love. He can't completely accept Rem's feelings because there's already someone else in his heart, and I respect that he's absolutely up front about it. But Rem is also in his heart, and her place in his heart will continue to grow. I hope I find my own Rem one day, someone who loves me but is also hard on me.
This is bad mindset of placing people in your hearts, If Emilia wants to give her heart to Subaru 100%, Subaru has to do the same you can't give only half your love for someone and expect them to give it all to you that is unfair in relationship and unhealthy because all that does is cause problems and toxicity in relationship. This would mean Emilia should just go find another Man also because Subaru wants to be selfish so Emilia should do the same but Subaru would obviously object to it because he think's he has a right for polygamy but the partner would not be. Quite honestly, Emilia is very hard on Subaru much more then Rem is, Emilia has called out on bs multiple times, What Rem is doing is not right by placing high expectations on someone when there already in bad place because all that does is leads to suffering and trying to change as a person because second you want to change yourself (can change to become a better person but he's trying to change himself completely) it means your forsaking who you are and will continue to hate and not forgive yourself. Subaru doesn't want to be weak and powerless and a loser so he wants to be a hero and all this stuff but this is bad mentality that leads down a path of suffering and self loathing which he very much does in the novels and it's gotten MUCH worse only thing Emilia and beako can do is keep being by his side and not try have him push himself so hard and blame himself for every little thing he does something Rem wants Subaru to do by pushing him to his limits of being a hero when in reality he's not a hero he can't do things people can do.

Yeah, Rem was definitely being strong for Subaru here and I highly respect that. She knew what was best for both of them in the long run. Also, probably best not to abandon your sister haha
The author releases this thing called “if stories” . They are stories of what would have happened if Subaru choose a different path from the original story. The “Sloth if” story is a version of the story where Ram ran away with Subaru. Other if stories are: “Pride if” - Reinhardt never saved Subaru from Elsa in the begging of the story and he died almost 100 times before Reinhardt showed up and took all the credit. Subaru hated Reinhardt because he is everything he wants to be but isn’t, a perfect white knight. Subaru became a mentally insane sociopath. “Wrath if” - Subaru did not jump off the cliff on episode 7 when Rem died and Ram was trying to kill him. He ran away and did some horrible things to survive. He developed multiple mental illnesses and became the leader of a criminal organization by abusing his powers. The other “if stories” are full of spoilers so I won’t mention them. But I would recommend reading them but reacting to them in the channel would be amazing.

I was not planning on crying this episode lol 😂 😭 but seeing you cry made me realize how much this show reflects real life and my own problems and made me cry, truly a great show.
This is the best reaction to this episode I’ve seen on TH-cam. This is the only reaction I’ve seen where someone’s cried which is amazing to me. This episode made me absolutely sob the first time I saw it and left an impact on me ill never forget. There hasn’t been any other anime among the almost 200 I’ve seen that have made me cry as much as Re: Zero.
Ah yes, the amazing ep 18 which started the "Waifu war". The fandom really sucks sometimes. A lot of people hated Subaru existence, funny enough they threw him in the trash can while putting Rem on a pedestal. The war alredy ended, but some people still let the rage on. This shenanigans where funny and annoying to see back in the day. xD
The "I love Emilia" bit always gets people. But they just can't separate themselves from Rem v Subaru and Emilia v Subaru to see where the plot is going and WHY Subaru had to say that to her; he had to be honest and his feelings for Emilia aren't just "some crush"; Emilia is literally his entire reason for meeting Rem in the first place, his entire reason for existing through RbD and although people would love to see Rem v Subaru (and I think it's still possible it can turn that way) the idea that Subaru could play along and pretend to not love Emilia in this moment would be -so- destructive; Subaru saying "I love Emilia" in literally the same breath Rem confesses to him is extremely mature if painful.
Well I don't believe Subaru and Rem will be "together" in the end at all, the story isn't even focusing on this compare to Subaru and Emilia and that Re:zero was made for Emilia to begin with. Rem wasn't even part of this story when he originally made Arc 3 and Rem wasn't even part of the story. There be no point in Rem IF, if main time line is still the Rem IF when there is Emilia and Satella that is one main focuses.
One thing about this episode that always partially confuses me regarding people's reactions is in regards to the "I love emilia" part and how some get like legit mad at Subaru. Like would they have preferred he just like been dishonest about his feelings (especially after he just got done baring them completely)? I'm glad he had the maturity to be honest and clear about things from the beginning. Also if he had just decided to switch his love to Rem, that'd be like completely against one of the main themes of the episode being Subaru gaining the strength to avoid taking the "logically easier" path since it'd result in a fundamental compromise of who he is and some of his best traits. Cause I know that if I'd been in a similar situation I could've easily been persuaded to start loving Rem instead, but that's because I don't have the greed or arrogance needed to be a hero, like many of the others who watched the episode.
I think most of the hatred stems from real life experience. You know, being rejected by the your crush even though you love them a whole lot? I'm sure a lot of people have had that happen to them and it always sucks. So when Rem got "rejected" everyone immediately looked through her POV with shit covered lenses and made Subaru out to be this bad guy who doesn't appreciate what Rem did for him. Its this really toxic mindset that people think Subaru is supposed to return those feelings of love for Rem just because she did something nice for him.
@@xenowarrior282 Honestly I think a lot of people who get quite mad are just too frustrated by their own lack of success with romantic partners. And since Subaru is a quite relatable character to them that immersion breaks at this point. You usually hear those people say that they'd never reject a girl that said something like that to them etc etc. So through their own frustrated, lonely and depressed lenses they can't see how he could turn that down if they never would. In that sense their responses obviously say less about their understanding of the characters and their motives and more about their own troubles.
at 10:46 Subaru is performing a traditional Japanese wedding proposal, he means every single word he's said and if Rem knew the cultural things about Japan, she'd have said yes. it's a difficult one to explain in how this is sometimes done but the outstretched hand, the quotes about working and being together, the straight-backed ojigi bow is the single most formal way of showing how much you think of the person without making it be subservient like the Dogeza bow. If Subaru wasn't so much of an idiot he'd have realised his feelings for Rem when doing this and not waited until the freaking Flugel Tree to tell her how he feels.
Since ya ask each vid. My main form of self care is IN PERSON DnD. Doing stuff online is like reading a book or playing a videogame in that I can't take it to heart since its all fake in the back of my mind. In person... anything; is so much more real and impactful to me. DnD is a form of therapy in that I can pore my emotions into making maps and characters; I can express myself without actually using words which is the hard part for me. But... then there is the critical weakness of this. I must have others for the experience to matter. the social component is what makes it communication and expression even if highly indirect to the actual message I am releasing from my bottled nature. With that in mind its been since June or July 2018 and I am still waiting on my teams to choose a day and so I can make it work. Because weekly is a minimum for it to be actually meaningful. I have told them I need this and I think they hear I want this; regardless of how direct I have been. Waiting games are great?
I'd like to point out that he's asking her to run away with him, not because he likes her or she likes him but because thus is the only way he has left to save her and he can't bare to see her die again for his sake or due to his mistakes. She's the last person and only person that he thinks he can save at this point. Also he's under the mistaken impression that she is the only one that will let him give up and accept him anyways. When it's actually the opposite, she is the only one that won't allow him to give up on himself.
Watching your “ugly cry” reminded me of an anime that I’d like to recommend you to watch and analyze. I don’t know if others have already mentioned it, but I highly recommend “Violet Evergarden.” It’s about a “doll” that has to learn to adjust to civilian life what it is to be human after knowing only combat and warfare all her young life. Another anime I recommend is “Vivy Flourite Eyes Song,” which was written by the same author as Re: Zero. And don’t worry about crying… I cry every time I rewatch this episode… I haven’t gained immunity yet, lol.
I've rewatched Re:Zero 2 times on my own and now again with this series I can never not cry at that scene. Whenever I watch Re:Zero I gotta take a whole roll of Toilet Paper with me so I can blow my nose and cry lol
This ep. is probably the best example of just talking but super entertaining Edit: and that ”I love Emilia”-moment reaction was just as I thought lol Edit 2: and now I’m waiting for the reaction of S2 ep. 4. It’s also psychology-vise really good
This show is the only show that made me cry more than 2 times, the characters feel so real. I suffer when they suffer, i cry when they cry, i'm happy when they happy. It was like i was there with them. I really want to see them until the show ends.
This whole video is basically > Subaru hating himself > Psyculturist talks about how someone should talk to someone in subaru's position > Rem proceeding to do just that. > Repeat Shows how good the whole dialogue here is.
Welcome to the diversion point for one of the if stories Sloth İf Re: Natsuki Rem Life in Another World From Zero this story explores what would happen if Subaru and rem run away together. it even adapted to a whole book I didn't read it yet but I know some bits of it. definitely an interesting story. Great video by the way
“Who can stop Puck?” Well the answer may not surprise you! (You guessed it, it’s that red haired guy who is known for being so stupidly overpowered that it’s basically a joke)
The “I love Emilia” part is supposed to be frustrating imo. Subaru expected Emilia to understand him better he loved her, he expected something in return for what hes done for her. Rem on the other hand, knows Subaru loves Emilia. She obviously knows, she can see he wants to be with her. Its the entire reason she even ignored him and let him do his own thing even if it was a mistake. And if it was to be with another woman. Its exactly in Rems character to be that unhealthily self sacrificial. Rem said it herself, she told Subaru all the good things about himself because he hated himself. Not because she wanted him to return her feelings, or because he owed her anything for bringing him out his emotional hole he dug himself into. But because he needed her at his lowest. And Subaru knows he loves Emilia, he can’t lead on Rem. Changing his mind just because she confessed to him isnt very loyal and true to himself
21:44 ...Honestly, i think it's wishful but i refuse to believe in the possibility no matter how probable it is. After opening up and being told to "Shut up" by someone you naturally used to consider a trusting figure, who would want to be emotionally demolished again ?
A tiny bit spoiler here. That Subaru didn't give up in this episode, doesn't mean he's fine mentally now... It's never that easy change yourself completely with just one dialogue, it's a long and difficult process. This is what i like most in this show, main hero struggles to achieve his goal facing various obstacles. Sometimes author hyperbolizes some things, but overall its a good story, i think.
This episode is why I like Rem better. Now in S2 that Emilia episode makes me then like her equally. But this gave me Rem and understanding; where as of this point in S1 Emilia was an incomprehensible mess that I could not really empathize with yet.

@@mrgerund3060 Yeah I loved that part, so damn sneaky and adorable too.
When it's actually the opposite, she is the only one that won't allow him to give up on himself.
the venting of Subarus emotion here was beautifull
One of my favorite pieces of fiction of all time.
If you like this type of episodes you gonna love Season 2, full of this, cant wait
Rem's confession is so powerfull I even cried for real.
Man i can’t tell how much i related to Subaru and what he said and how much i fucking cry just thinking about it
My boy Subaru
Whenever I watch Re:Zero I gotta take a whole roll of Toilet Paper with me so I can blow my nose and cry lol
only two times? pathetic
@@R3in_Ch I only got to watching Re:Zero last year
Two times? You gotta bump that number up
This ep. is probably the best example of just talking but super entertaining
Edit: and that ”I love Emilia”-moment reaction was just as I thought lol
Edit 2: and now I’m waiting for the reaction of S2 ep. 4. It’s also psychology-vise really good
This show is the only show that made me cry more than 2 times, the characters feel so real. I suffer when they suffer, i cry when they cry, i'm happy when they happy. It was like i was there with them. I really want to see them until the show ends.
This whole video is basically
> Subaru hating himself
> Psyculturist talks about how someone should talk to someone in subaru's position
> Rem proceeding to do just that.
> Repeat
Shows how good the whole dialogue here is.
amazing man, hope your channel will grow
Welcome to the diversion point for one of the if stories Sloth İf Re: Natsuki Rem Life in Another World From Zero this story explores what would happen if Subaru and rem run away together. it even adapted to a whole book I didn't read it yet but I know some bits of it. definitely an interesting story. Great video by the way
“Who can stop Puck?”
Well the answer may not surprise you!
(You guessed it, it’s that red haired guy who is known for being so stupidly overpowered that it’s basically a joke)
12:31 I still ask myself everyday
Together !! 👍👍👍💯💯💯
Love you Ugly cry man I also cried in this episode
We’ve spent 17 episodes fully aware that he loves Emilia. It’s why Rem refuses. Him saying that was him telling rem he was alright.
The analogy I always use for this episode is Rem putting a band-aid on Subaru's flesh wound. It helps, but it doesn't solve the issue
@@fili0938 This band-aid finally starting to be taken off in arc 7, he gotta stop overly relying on Rem.
@@enigma3072 Rem fucked snapped it off with one single line. And she didn't even intend to do that.
What of Subaru piloted Eva 01 instead of Ikari Shinji
This episode is why I like Rem better. Now in S2 that Emilia episode makes me then like her equally. But this gave me Rem and understanding; where as of this point in S1 Emilia was an incomprehensible mess that I could not really empathize with yet.
I'd say Rem doesn't take the L lying down, but
Who are these supposed people that don't like it when you pause and analyze? You keep mentioning them, but I don't see them.
Yeah the mods removed their comments a long time ago that and we had a group of them on TH-cam and emails 😂 Glad you’re watching through the content though hope you enjoy
@@psyculturists I am enjoying, thanks. Have you ever gone back through these videos just to see how much you actually predicted, cause its scary how right you've been about where the plot was going to go.
@@spqrd13 Not yet as I’m a little caught with the 9/10 other series I’m doing atm but in the future yeah might do a pass back.
Rem best Girl
❤❤
do you bother with cg? because a next episodes will be a battle and if you are watching the directors cut there will be cg but in the normal version there is no cg in the battle.
