You guys pretty much nailed what I believe the author had intended for the audience to take away from the Rem and Subaru interaction this episode. The purpose of Rem telling Subaru she loves him and all the things she loves about him was not so that he would reciprocate even though that's her dream. The purpose was to re-establish Subaru's character and encourage him to elevate to his best self. Even though we all like and have sympathy for Rem, Subaru choosing her as his romantic love-interest in this moment is the actual betrayal of his character. That's what he tried to do at the beginning of this conversation out of desperation and it would only harm the both of them to partner up now while he loves Emilia. Subaru verbally telling Rem that he loves Emilia is also the final affirmation Rem needs to know that she did her job well and that Subaru is back to his usual optimistic self. Even though I get it's painful, a lot of audience members/reactors don't get that. That's why I'm surprised you guys are having so much trouble accepting that Puck and the giant cat creature are the same thing. We've received that new information and have to accept it and move on. We see Puck become the creature and Subaru literally asks the creature if it's Puck, to which he affirms yes. He uses Emilia's nickname and talks like he's familiar with Subaru. It's not the Witch of Envy as Puck refers to her in the third-person. "If you really want to kill me then grow a thousand shadows. Half of what 'Satella' could".

This is the first time we got to see what Subaru has thought about himself this whole time. We don't know what his life was like before, but it seems back then he did nothing and thought of his life as meaningless. That's just the harsh reality of this world too. To save everyone you'll need to cater to other people's wishes too, not just your own.

The huge wolf is 100% Puck. He's not the Witch of Envy because I think he said something about her in a scene in this episode that made her sound like a seperate entity. Also, Puck sees Emilia as his daughter, he's pretty much her guardian.

Goddamn, was this episode the definition of bittersweet. Very happy that Subaru and Rem can be honest with each other. Like you ladies, I can’t help but feel that Rem deserves better. I didn’t expect this show to be so heavy in romance. But I like that it is, can’t wait to see what comes next for the characters.

I know that this episode sparked a war between the love interest but i dont think Subaru breaking down gets talked about enough in this ep. I think for myself i resonated immensely with him at where i was in my life and i think for alot of young men that are directionless Subaru gives us a bit of comfort and.This is the first moment where i realized hes my MC and he only gets better from here
Rem holds a deep place in Subaru's heart however its just in 2nd place, but that doesn't mean he doesn't love her deeply he just holds Emilia to a high regard.
I have never seen an episode in which vocal expression and emotion is put across more than in this episode. the voice actors for this episode both Japanese and English did an amazing job
@mana5531 the thing is, its been blatantly obvious that even before Rem fell in love with subaru, EVERYONE knows subaru likes emilia in that mansion. So Rem has already expected that subaru would reject him. What she wants is that she just wants to support him with everything she has for being her HERO.
Just so you know, Subaru does have love for Rem, Like, a lot, like he'd die for her as shown multiple times and he has seen her fight to her last bit for him. Remember in the previous episode he was like "screw everything if you all are going to just forget Rem I dont want this anymore!" Rem has a huge spot in his heart.
I think it’s officially safe to say that Rem is one the best girl in the series. I wish I had a Rem in my life 😅😅. The way she continues to support and protect Subaru, while knowing she will be second best, is very admirable. Rem is awesome.

Rem mentioned 1) Southern country of lunagica , VOLLAKIA have bad terms with lungaica and politics in that country is hard to live. Fun fact is Priscilla came from that country 2) northern country of lunagica GUSTEKO is covered with heavy snow which is also hard to survive. The biggest failure anime made this scene what I have understood is that Subaru does say he loves Rem too, but his first choice is Emilia and always been her. So it's not like he doesn't love Rem, just that he is being fully honest. This scene is just pure honesty, brutal how it might feel for some for him to reject Rem, but Rem knew his feelings and she did reject his offer to run away with her. Rem is just too pure to be real.
Nah, the anime did this episode spot on, he said that later on. But the author himself didn’t want to include it in the anime for some reason(He also cut out a major thing all Light Novel Rem fans wanted to see😂), maybe he backpedaled? They were unsure if the series would recieve more seasons as many LN adaptations only get greenlit 1 season and then stop to promote the LN. So they basically made it so if no season was made it could still be enjoyed on it's own. Likely also why some important s2 things were cut That is also why a lot of arc 3 was cut(especially Al). And they also cut a lot of how toxic Rem is. The anime did her favors because of how creepy and obsessive she actually is being cut

"I love Emilia" might sound crazy at first, but it is an assurance for Rem that Subaru won't give up and he'll do his best again, he'll stick being an awesome version of himself that Rem knows :)
Glad you guys recognized that despite the very clear feelings most people had regarding who Subaru should be with, character-wise it's been clearly established that he loves Emila more than Rem. You are 100% right, he was being selfish and settling when trying to convince Rem to run away. It's interesting since her refusing then prompts his monologue about how awful he is and his deep self-hatred which, by the way, is a wonderful character moment. Think of it this way, you just watched an episode that was primarily two characters in the same exact place just talking with one another. Thats it. There was a little action in the beginning but for the most part they just stood there looking over the city and having their discussion, and its honestly one of the best ReZero episodes. I think what makes this harder is that at this point in the story, Emila really hasn't done all that much. We dont really know much about her yet. Makes it so much easier to root for Rem. Good thing, and avoiding spoilers, it will be shown that Subaru cares for Rem just as much as Emila, so despite him rejecting her, she is still incredibly important to him.
I’m glad y’all undertook that Subaru finally said all the right things. The (many) people who hated Subaru after this and think he owes Rem his romantic love lack the emotional maturity expected of the audience here

Fun fact: Even after these whole scene Subaru still sees himself as undeserving to be a hero and a weak, irredeemable piece of shit, but at least he want to try his best to be a hero for rem and everyone else because that is how rem sees him, and that what keeps him going for the rest of season 1. He even said it when Spoiler (If you still have not watched season 2 episode 1): Rem fell into the sleeping beauty disease, he said that "Without you rem, I couldn't even find the Subaru who can put on the tough guy act".

while i do think when this ep first came out a lot of people overreacted to hell and back to the "i love emilia" moment, I def understand how crushing it could feel to see those words after rem poured her heart out for him and helped him back into a good state of mind. Could have def used a "thank you" somewhere in there but to act as if subaru doesnt appreciate rem or something like some people do is just ignorant 💀
A lot of people get to this episode and seem to completely forget that Rem killed Subaru once, and tortured him another time. I love the fact that this anime did not take this moment to have Subaru begin his harem, as so many other anime protags would do given an oppurtunity like this. As for what happens in the LN/manga, I will never read them, and I doubt I will be the only one. For us, the anime is all there is, so we judge by what we see. Of course, a new season is coming, so there is always the possibility of a harem in the future, but for right now... Subaru did the right thing, he was honest. He did not take advantage of her feelings for him for selfish personal gratification. One of Subaru's many great moments in the anime, in my opinion.
Yall should read the sloth if story. its basically an alternate timeline where rem and subaru run away and get married. honestly its pretty entertaining and well written in its own right and its quite lengthy for a what if story

when i was young and this show was airing, i didnt really understand in depth what was going on but what rem said was very touching to someone who was a little bit depressed and self loathing back then. Then at the end i thought they were going to kiss but then subaru said "I love Emilia" i was so mad and very confused why there was no kiss scene at the end
*SPOILER ALERT* That is very incredibly unlikely. Puck doesn't actually succeed in freezing the earth. Reinhard shows up, and no diffs him if he tries. Felt was in the same area that Subaru and Ram were when Emilia dies, and Puck starts freezing everything. We know Felt is fine in those timelines. Subaru and Ram would be too.
This is one of my favorite anime episodes ever. It is rough, especially if you've been in either Subaru's or Rem's shoes before. But In the end Subaru couldn't smile when talking about his future with Rem here, but he could when he admitted his feelings for Emilia. Rem wants Subaru to smile, so it makes sense. There is definitely a bit of "the female character xyz so the male character can progress", but this also helps us understand Rem, she's not just here so Subaru can progress.
I understand people who are frustrated with Subaru's "bad timing" of "I love Emilia", but I think it takes a lot of courage to be that honest with Rem about it and not send her mixed messages...though frustratingly, he starts to send mixed Messages to Emilia in S2 anyway, lol. The story is kind of a mess, but I don't think Subaru should be crufified for saying that he loves Emilia. Why he loves Emilia likely is some supernatural force tied to his mysterious past.
Subaru does indeed love Rem. Deeply. But she's not his "true" love. Emilia is. Rem is 1A in Subaru's heart. I loved the emotional honesty on display in ep18, and I truly think this ep featured one of Inori Minase's best performances in her career.

So Rem has already expected that subaru would reject him. What she wants is that she just wants to support him with everything she has for being her HERO.
Just so you know, Subaru does have love for Rem, Like, a lot, like he'd die for her as shown multiple times and he has seen her fight to her last bit for him. Remember in the previous episode he was like "screw everything if you all are going to just forget Rem I dont want this anymore!"

This episode serves as a great test of whether the reactors actually are paying attention, and also truly understand what the show is about.
I think it’s officially safe to say that Rem is one the best girl in the series. I wish I had a Rem in my life 😅😅. The way she continues to support and protect Subaru, while knowing she will be second best, is very admirable. Rem is awesome.

The biggest failure anime made this scene what I have understood is that Subaru does say he loves Rem too, but his first choice is Emilia and always been her. So it's not like he doesn't love Rem, just that he is being fully honest. This scene is just pure honesty, brutal how it might feel for some for him to reject Rem, but Rem knew his feelings and she did reject his offer to run away with her. Rem is just too pure to be real.
Nah, the anime did this episode spot on, he said that later on. But the author himself didn’t want to include it in the anime for some reason(He also cut out a major thing all Light Novel Rem fans wanted to see😂), maybe he backpedaled?

Probably moreso has to do with S1 development. They were unsure if the series would recieve more seasons as many LN adaptations only get greenlit 1 season and then stop to promote the LN. So they basically made it so if no season was made it could still be enjoyed on it's own. Likely also why some important s2 things were cut
That is also why a lot of arc 3 was cut(especially Al).
And they also cut a lot of how toxic Rem is. The anime did her favors because of how creepy and obsessive she actually is being cut

Glad you guys recognized that despite the very clear feelings most people had regarding who Subaru should be with, character-wise it's been clearly established that he loves Emila more than Rem. You are 100% right, he was being selfish and settling when trying to convince Rem to run away. It's interesting since her refusing then prompts his monologue about how awful he is and his deep self-hatred which, by the way, is a wonderful character moment. Think of it this way, you just watched an episode that was primarily two characters in the same exact place just talking with one another. Thats it. There was a little action in the beginning but for the most part they just stood there looking over the city and having their discussion, and its honestly one of the best ReZero episodes.
I think what makes this harder is that at this point in the story, Emila really hasn't done all that much. We dont really know much about her yet. Makes it so much easier to root for Rem. Good thing, and avoiding spoilers, it will be shown that Subaru cares for Rem just as much as Emila, so despite him rejecting her, she is still incredibly important to him.

Speaking for my own self-esteem, I just assume all men feel how Subaru feels and just want someone like Rem.

while i do think when this ep first came out a lot of people overreacted to hell and back to the "i love emilia" moment, I def understand how crushing it could feel to see those words after rem poured her heart out for him and helped him back into a good state of mind. Could have def used a "thank you" somewhere in there but to act as if subaru doesnt appreciate rem or something like some people do is just ignorant 💀

A lot of people get to this episode and seem to completely forget that Rem killed Subaru once, and tortured him another time. I love the fact that this anime did not take this moment to have Subaru begin his harem, as so many other anime protags would do given an oppurtunity like this. As for what happens in the LN/manga, I will never read them, and I doubt I will be the only one. For us, the anime is all there is, so we judge by what we see. Of course, a new season is coming, so there is always the possibility of a harem in the future, but for right now... Subaru did the right thing, he was honest. He did not take advantage of her feelings for him for selfish personal gratification. One of Subaru's many great moments in the anime, in my opinion.

It’s impossible to keep a physical reaction from coming out especially for me. Although not literal I had the feeling of falling to my knees in defeat from this scene my first watch through.
People will go "Rem is overrated", and I think back to this episode and I just think that Rem is just the sweetest, and such a rock for Subaru.
when i was young and this show was airing, i didnt really understand in depth what was going on but what rem said was very touching to someone who was a little bit depressed and self loathing back then. Then at the end i thought they were going to kiss but then subaru said "I love Emilia" i was so mad and very confused why there was no kiss scene at the end
The worst part is even if they ran away Emilia would still die and Puck would still kill Subaru by destroying the world

That is very incredibly unlikely. Puck doesn't actually succeed in freezing the earth. Reinhard shows up, and no diffs him if he tries. Felt was in the same area that Subaru and Ram were when Emilia dies, and Puck starts freezing everything. We know Felt is fine in those timelines. Subaru and Ram would be too.

This is one of my favorite anime episodes ever. It is rough, especially if you've been in either Subaru's or Rem's shoes before. But In the end Subaru couldn't smile when talking about his future with Rem here, but he could when he admitted his feelings for Emilia. Rem wants Subaru to smile, so it makes sense.
There is definitely a bit of "the female character xyz so the male character can progress", but this also helps us understand Rem, she's not just here so Subaru can progress.
I understand people who are frustrated with Subaru's "bad timing" of "I love Emilia", but I think it takes a lot of courage to be that honest with Rem about it and not send her mixed messages...though frustratingly, he starts to send mixed Messages to Emilia in S2 anyway, lol. The story is kind of a mess, but I don't think Subaru should be crufified for saying that he loves Emilia. Why he loves Emilia likely is some supernatural force tied to his mysterious past.

I loved the emotional honesty on display in ep18, and I truly think this ep featured one of Inori Minase's best performances in her career.
