    I started boarding to hang out with my son. we started togerther. Me 40.Him 10. First few years felt like someone beat with a board every day. We were only getting to the mountain two weeks a year. Third year I noticed our gloves weren't always soaking wet.. My son..." we're not falling down anymore." Now 68 living in the Rocky Mountain of Colorado. My son and I board together twice a week and we are killing it. Finally went for the CAB 180 off a jump. Hoo ray. Love your videos.

      Dude, a cab 180. That’s cool. I’m the same age, still carving hard, entered the Dirksen Dirby banked slalom at Bachelor last month and was humbled, but stoked. I haven’t completed one yet (though I have tried several) off a jump, actually I am mostly throwing spray off the sides, but I’ll try again on a softer day. Rip it up fellow analog brother!😎 James from the Hood

    I had my first snowboarding session ever today and just kept thinking about all of your advice from your videos, especially the knee steering and posture stuff - I was able to link my turns, make short tight turns and even do some with switch by the end of the day! Thanks a ton Malcom

    For two years now, my kids and I have been relying on Outdoor Master Ultra Pro and OTG goggles, and they've been fantastic! Even starting at age 10, my youngest has been using these goggles, and they're still going strong. I recently made the switch to the Outdoor Master Falcon Zeiss goggles with the super strong magnetic lens, and they look amazing! Outdoor Master has been a reliable companion for our family. The value is exceptional, and their helmets have been a great addition too!

    I'm fresh after my first couple hours of snowboarding in my life. Boy it's exhausting to learn. Everything is tense, poor balance, feel like a toddler learning to walk again, but satisfaction definitely wins :D I think I have found my new thing for this year.

    always a fan of you, @Malcom. I started learning to snowboard at age 49 (never been to any ski resorts), mostly watching your videos. Now, I am 51 and can do all kinds of runs (esp carvings). Thanks to you!!! I am really happy for you that you finally got some sponsors! Cheers to that!…and this coming March we are heading out to zermatt. I hope to see you there since you also frequent that place:)

    Another Classic Video... When i learnt it was at a dry slope in Wycombe.... With Hard Boots... Yes Ski boots... instructor had nice soft boots... This was maybe 25 or so years ago... Been boarding on and off since then, both my sons board. Myself & my youngest Joe had the massive privilege of some lessons with you 2 years or so ago... Changed my week after those 4 hours.. For anyone reading this if your going to Alpe d'huez try and get booked in you will not regret it and the resort is awesome. I'm binge watching your vids before my trip to Canada lol

    Just like you said in the video, in my first day of snowboarding I fell a lot, it was painful but it was unavoidable. The second day, I came with knee and wrist protector, so I stood back up right away when falling and continue without pain problem. Also, I learn faster after watching your videos. You explained it well! Thank you Malcolm!😊

    I have been boarding for about 20 years but with a big hiatus in the middle. I'm not a pro by any definition of the word but now I own a few boards and try and get to the Alps once a year (difficult with a young family). Watching this takes me way back to when I first learnt to link turns on a dry slope in the UK. The thrill and excitement of progression is something that felt frustrating and slow back in the day, but now looking back I'd love to get that feeling again! I guess the closest thing now is progressing with riding switch! Anyhow, my advice or tuppence worth would be to keep at it, it's a very steep learning curve, but it's one that doesn't stay steep for very long at all! Great job girls, I bet if they took a month off and came back they'd be carving with another week's worth of lessons! Respect 🤙

    My first time on snow (back in '93) was a dream because by then I'd spent 3 to 4hrs every week at the local dry slope for about 6 months before I ever got to slide on real snow. Real snow just made everything so much easier - the only thing I needed to do was to do a little "less" to get the board to work in comparison to the dry slope.
    Of course I paid for that easy first day on snow with a constantly bruised hip for many weeks and two lots of stitches in my hands after ripping through gloves when crashing on the dry slope. Battle scars!

    I remember that scary feling as you do that initial first few turns the sudden speed as your board points down the slope, the panic, the fear of catching the front edge. Practicing riding switch all those old memories came flooding back 😅

    Great patient teaching! The first 2-3 days are a nightmare with constant falling. Also I found it 10x easier to stand up toe-side instead of heel side so I wish some of my instructors would lean into the strengths of the students, then incorporate the item (heel in my case) that they're weaker on second. But after you're comfortable with the falling leaf and confidence with your breaking, connecting the turns wasn't too bad imo. Then the hardest part is getting comfortable with the higher speeds and getting into the intermediate areas of learning to carve instead of skidding (which is where I'm at currently). It's a fun but SUPER challenging sport imo

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah totally agree! First few days are so tough !!

  • @ColindeSilva
    @ColindeSilva 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    @Malcolm, i notice 2 things as well with beginners:
    1) the fear they cannot stop (lack of control). For skiers, it is easier to master (snow-plough) but boarders need a bit more on the balance using friction to skid to a stop. Once you know you can safely stop if you pick up too much speed, your confidence is way higher to try out new things.
    2) linking turns. Linking turns is helped immensely by having a rhythm. Like when you are "falling leaf", it is easier to swing one way when having the momentum from the other, just like before your first linked turns, you sway one way, then use momentum to get you across the edge change across the fall line to the other edge. What helps here: music! Or appreciation of rhythm. If you force yourself to turn to a beat (in your head, headphones, whatever), one, you are calling the shots, and two, it is way easier. Really helped the missus, when she had some issues.

    a great video again, it just made me recognize my progress, i started from zero about three weeks ago. Made my first turns on within the first two hours of my lesson, but then further progress was very hard. At the second lesson my trainer took me on a red slope, was quite scary to me on the steeper parts, and at the of that lesson (5h on snowboard in total) i had a hard landing o rocksolid ice. Was very painfull and i could not go snowboarding for 2 weeks.
    Just yesterday i made a restart on my own, following your instructions, specially that "Learn how to snowboard in 15min. That works great for me, my next step should be carving, but that feels still a bit far away.
    My greatest fears are also speed and to catch an edge, and the combination of both :)
    I am so happy to find your channel. great stuff

    Hi Malcolm. Just found your channel, watched the one where you answered a viewers comments about judder and said you liked viewers questions, also just watched your 'should you lift toes vid and thought of a video you could make. Bit of back ground. Snowboarder for 20+ years, never had a lesson, learnt bad habits (posture etc) but am very capable of riding anything. I'm now in Courchevel for the season and my friends have left so thought now is the time to learn posture and SWITCH (hence how I found your channel). What I noticed when going back to basics for switch is I was gripping with my toes in my boots when trying to do a toe turn. Once I spotted myself doing it I relaxed and used my shins on the front of my boots and it made a massive difference. I'm mentioning it because it's an identical process to you 'lift toe's' video and might be a helpful tip.

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Brian, glad you've found me! Yes that is true what you're saying, because pushing your toes away actually encourages you to extend your ankle joint when in reality we want to flex into it and close the joint. Enjoy courchevel, really great area there!

    About 3, 4 weeks ago just started to learn toe turns and linking, it was super painful! I kept on catching an edge because of my posture and not committing to lean forward on toes and ended up getting a bruised tailbone literally just 2 weeks in of the season 😅 nothing major but definitely felt it whenever I sit down. AND a sore neck. But now so far haven’t caught an edge in awhile and been getting the hang of the turns!

    Even though there is no rule on which edge to start, I would always recommend heal because if you fall backwards, you land on your butt because your are falling uphill. If you fall forward, you can use your arms to absorb some of the shock as you opposed to your face taking all of it. On your toe edge, if you fall forward, no harm, no foul. If you fall backwards on the slope, you're likely going to hit your head.
    You want a beginner to feel at least a little comfortable being on a snowboard, to minimize their chances falling backwards downslope (i.e. on their toe edge).
    There is also the fear factor. It so scary going backward downslope....it took many many riding days before I committed to the toe edge.

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I forget what it was like, as a beginner, because 20 years ago, the training was a bit more hands off! :-) It was also newer, i guess. Good to be reminded - still have to get the kiddo snowboarding, which is difficult when he is a pretty good skier!

    Having taken on the challenge of teaching the girlfriend, she has progressed (then regressed after a broken collarbone just before c19 stopped the world, then 3 year break before next trip). Her confidence has definitely grown on the last trip and got the "I wish we weren't going home tomorrow" on the last day. So got a 2 week trip planned for January and possibly look at last minute deal for a week in march. I enjoy watching you coach as I borrow some of the drills and analogies.
    I'd love her to take real lessons but she finds accents hard to understand (ADHD).

    My first day I broke my wrist lol. My little sister brought me up the main lift, never snowboarded before, I made it down but on one fall I broke my wrist.
    It’s been about 15 years since then, and I just went yesterday. Once again I was herded onto a lift and yep… same thing. This time I wasn’t 18 years old anymore though.
    After that we went to the small lift with a short, straight slope. Was still fairly steep and icy but not too bad. I did that slope several times. Way harder than skating lol.

    I get that falling leaf teaches you to control speed, but I think for beginners it just burns out their thighs each run, which leads to fatigue which leads to lack of confidence. Once I let go of using falling leaf as a crutch to get down the mountain and just did S turns was when I understood what snowboarding was about and that it doesn't need to be exhausting.

    I finally had a breakthrough yesterday with linking my turns after a bad fall last season (I caught my heel edge while doing a traverse on my toe & broke my wrist back in March 2022). What I’m finding is that near the end of the beginner hill, I am catching that heel edge almost every time but ONLY once I’m almost back down to the “Magic Carpet Lineup”. It’s REALLY frustrating 🥴

    • @m00tastic
      @m00tastic 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Malcolm has some good videos around how to avoid edge catches, it's much more likely on more mellow slopes like at the bottom of the hill, where there is less angle between the board and the snow! And more common at slow speeds when side slipping rather than carving (or at least moving in much the same direction as the board is pointing) - keep at it and I'm sure you'll get it sussed! 😊

    I started only this season and first day was absolutely horrible, had a old board of a friend that is more for expert hard core carve riders and catched every edge possible and some pretty bad falls.
    With a new board and this great videos it gets better and better every time :) Malcolm explains it absolutely perfect in the videos and it helps a lot. Every time on the mountain i think on this great advice and you get a feeling for your errors and try to fix them.
    What type of board do you recommend for beginners (Rocker, Hybrid Rocker/Camber...)?

    Hey MM, maybe a niche topic but could you do a video on how to / how you snowboard with your dog? I would love to do that with mine as well and no one has videos on that topic.

      Yeah nice idea 😊 I don't snowbaord as much with Indy anymore because the slopes are busier. But early and late season I'll see what I can do 😊😊

      @@malcolmmoore It'd be a pain in the butt to make, but if you ever want to do it, my suggestion would be: take the trail map, a photo of the front side of the mountain, and draw the runs on the photo, as they appear on the map; then in a different part of the video, go back and forth between riding a lift, or going down a run, and tracing your route on the map of the mountain.
      Maybe take some time to highlight how some features marked on the map actually look like in real life, because many of us learned the hard way that stuff on an artist's representation of the mountain (aka, a trail map) can look pretty different when you're actually on the runs 😆
