Building my Honda Del Sol! Part 1: PAINT PREP AND BODY WORK

In the first episode of Building my Honda Del Sol, we dive into this car and get it semi-stripped down so it can be body worked and prepped for paint! I found some unforeseen things once I started tearing this car down, not happy with what I found but at the end of the day its an old $700 Honda project that is thankfully rust free and will still look amazing when its finished! the Ruined Sol if you ask me should become a decorative art peace vs being restored. it looks pretty cool rotting away like it is
take all the good parts and just leave the shell to rust
Or, keep full headlight depth (12-15") and have a side profile attached to a wall. Basically, hanging a fender, door, head/tail lights and a small bit of bumpers and hood. Could be a cool talking piece

@@DelidePlayer would be sick, as you get to keep some of it as, a cool remembrance piece, but it's not going to literally be a heap of junk on the ground that you have to clean up at some point. Would be a lot of work, but would be super fun to do with a plasma cutter, slice that baby up. Cut a bunch of the inner structure stuff off so it's not super heavy. Keep a little bit of the frame so the door, fenders, lights etc have something to bolt to and boom!

The difference and videos style from lz to here is great it’s not like watching the same channel twice.

Seems more real. I love LZ videos but its like sometimes loses touch with reality and what a normal person can do / afford where this is where we can relate more

I think it’s Awesome that you’re trying to do things yourself and not afraid to jump in and learn how to do new things, so hopefully you can do it yourself in the future!!! Great Job Mike!!!
My dad being a jack of all trades Vietnam veteran. Has taught me most everything growing up and shadow coats were always a Matt black rattle can/pressure pack. Nearly any colour available will work. Using panel beating tools to eliminate Bondo/Bog is where the art is

This is the perfect car to learn body and paint work on because it's definitely in rough shape but you will be able to see what to do and what not to do and make it extremely better than what it was or would have been. And it will be super satisfying to see it done in the end and even if it's not a perfect professional job you will know that you did it yourself. Plus it's a small car and you have the help of some really talented people with all the right tools and I think you have the patience to do a good job and you will definitely learn a lot. 👌👌
Bro so glad you have another del sol and your gonna use parts from your first car to make a fresh one, its a shame you can't restore the first one because its to far gone but it will give you the parts you need to make up the new one, thankfully the heart from the ratted one will live on in the new shell :)) keep up the good work buddy, can't wait to follow you on the journey with the del sol!!
I really hope you make this car as close as perfect as money allows and Bswap it. Leave the nostalgia parts of the other car IN the other car. Let it be complete, for nostalgias sake, and build this one clean, like all your other builds. I feel like both cars deserve it!

Awesome tackling this yourself! Just make sure you keep the sander flat so you don’t dig or miss any spots!
Second this! Don't tilt the sander and use the edge or the paper because that will make me spots

A good K24 swap would make this thing a beast I have a 14’ accord that has a k24 6 speed manual from factory and always heard it’s a good swap for earlier Hondas
For reference..Guide Coat is used over high build primers to show any low spots i.e. dents and dings..with blocks not a da. You won't get it completely straight with a da sander. I do all old vehicles mostly trucks hotrods so iv been doing it since I was 18 and I'm 36. Sand the whole car with 80 then fix dents.
I feel like Trevor from motion auto would be down on a collaborative effort. Of all the people close to you that are available that I am aware of he's probably the best at body work and the most likely to be keen.
What a cool place to work! You can learn just about everything about cars you want from the people around you. Plus having access to all that equipment.
You got the people and people with tools who can help you learn correctly
Use the section/panel off the rusty shell if you wanted to it fixed perfectly
Wear a respirator mike while doing bodywork
Know you have always been hands on with the work but it's great to see you pushing yourself and learning new things and skills.
Too many other TH-camrs don't and end up being a car collector who pawns the work off
I'm excited to see this build. I have a 97 delsol si and I love mine. You don't see many nowadays and there are not many people that like sols. I have a soft spot for 90s Hondas.

Ima say it in all del sol videos as i did in the intro of this series. Ruin sol has to be a decroation somewhere on the compound. In one of the trails or hiding around a corner while drifting but won't get hit

I wish I could accept such a realization. My Sol (that I have owned for more than 20 years now) is starting to get holes the size of multiple fingers in it but I still can't bring myself to just give it up. It literally needs everything at this point, but I'd still rather restore my car than have another. I guess it would be different if I let go of the car already at some point, but I've actually owned my first car for 20 years now and it's hard to just give up.

Can you imagine driving this car in Japan? I been there you would not believe the narrow roads. Small is king in Japan. The new
American Hondas would not be fun. But Honda is going to sell a new Prelude . It will be a two door car

Plz tell me it's gonna be a modern divine style (hella clean dream style builds). I know how much u love the nostalgia u get from the ruined sol but I came more recently and am staying here to see how classy each vehicle u make is. Now that u have another shell to work on and u could build it with ur modern taste cuz u hv the other shell as a nostalgic art piece.
Imo you should make it green... i know it wouldn't be one of the original made in that color, but in that shade looks nice :)
Im not sure if you have said what colour your painting the car but dam that green on the underside of the trunk is 🔥

I noticed when you sanded you had the sander at an angle keep it as flat as you can going in different directions

nice video, even though there is enough ventilation because the doors are open, it is wise to use a face mask when sanding the hood. safety first.

Good work getting this done by yourself just keep in mind when using the DA sander to keep it as flat as possible while you sand when you tilt it to the side like I saw you was doing in the video what it’s really doing is making small dents and causing low spots and causes more work for you
They got great deals on totes at Sam's and Costco and Walmart right now. That's what I'm doing with my car while I'm stripping it down to be remade

My Indigo snakes (drymarchon) have never bitten or jumped at me outside of the enclosure. Even wild specimens don’t strike 99% of the time
Love the drive to do it yourself Mike, but maybe next time borrow a couple fender/body hammer & dolly tools or go to Harbour Freight/Northern Tools to make it a little easier on you + the area you want to address. Either way nothing beats you doing it yourself. Definitely keep the OEM color as you said ~ it'll be that much better in the end!

The ruined sol you could do some work to it so it looks better still like the bumper and the hood so it looks straighter
Good to see you diving into the body work 💯👌🤙It takes a good few months to get the hang of and to get the eye and toch for body work, Painting is less labour intensive but alot of skill involved to get it right 😅 Primer is easy because if you mess up you canjuet sand it 😅
You could go with a nice brown for the paint to kinda have the same vibe as the original
Body work isn't hard it's tedious but sooooo worth doing yourself because of the end result and reward!!
Cut up the rusted rear and use it for the new one

Rather than burning the cash on buying all new hardware, it might be a good idea to invest in a passivating/plating kit to re-zinc the current hardware if they aren’t marred; especially if you/friend have another project in the future or want to try passivating the hardware in a colour or different finish other than zinc, might save you a lot in the long run; love the projects can’t wait to see what you do with this one.
Also are you going to try and make the entertainment system in the rear of the century work? Or the nav unit in the front?

Honestly I would rather see your original del sul left as is, a memory left in time. Then the new one you make what mature Mike with more funds would do now.

Take a pic of the old Del sol and get it blown up on some 3M vinyl and wrap the new one looking like the old 👌
