The word you are looking for is "Vasbyt", hiking with full battle kit and weapon, pulling tyres and carrying tar poles through the Swartberge around Oudshoorn in the Karoo for 3 days while not getting much sleep, food or water. But it was actually not that elite - all infantry officers had to complete that before becoming lieutenant. The instructors would taunt the soldiers all the time "why suffer so much, get on the bakkie, have a nice shower and rest". There were more intense filtering processes in the parabats (physical) and recce groups (psycological).
One thing it does show. Although they all big strong rugby players. It’s is just a sport. And military is on next level. That kamp was standard for any elite / SF selection or training. Be it Recces. 32. Royal Marines. SAS. Seals etc. Coz the amount of whining and crying about this is proof that end of day. Rugby is contact sport. But it’s just that. A game. Military is on whole new level. If you know. You know
That’s utterly ridiculous. If you think those big Dutchman couldn’t handle it, your head is filled with cement. They don’t cry and whine about it, they laugh. The reason it’s criticised is because it didn’t help them with rugby. But don’t act like those boys couldn’t handle it, if they can’t, no one can.
Mcdermott was the whistle blower? Not PDV

It’s crazy to think how times have changed and how soft today’s generation is in comparison.
No watching a film, or tv show, or playing video games, can teach a person what they are speaking about
Referring to Recce Special Forces
No guys. It’s wrong to break a person down. Because you are not psychologically trained!

I was thinking of the special task force documentary from the mid 90’s on SABC
South African Special Task Force.

Everyone is born to do something and the military is no different
