By the way, this camera, or at least, my Praktica Luzmedia Z35, gave me a wonderful introduction to the world of photography. It does have its limitations but as long as you don't expect miracles from it, it's a perfectly good beginners camera imo.
I agree. Most anything is a good start, even most smartphones these days. It really does depend on expectations. My first decent camera was a Canon 2-megapixel compact camera. I used that for quite a few years. Though now most phone cameras will top it quality wise, haha.
The zoom is incredible. I've got a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and when I take pictures of the moon, you can hardly see it. With the Minolta M35z, you can actually see the detail of the moons surface. I can take clear pictures of some across two football fields. That being said, stabilization is an issue and this camera doesn't take pictures rapidly, as some others do. I bought mine for $70 online and I'm happy overall. 😊
That's a good price. Yeah, these all-in-one zoom cameras are always going to have an advantage with the big lens. The Samsung S20 Ultra phone has a "100x space zoom" but it's actually more like a 10x optical zoom with the rest being marketing, lol.
@@ScottJWaldron "100x space zoom" lol. Yeah, I don't think a phone is capable of anything in high quality past 10x just yet. What's your favorite DSLR under $200?
@chenzenzo You would have to go used and pretty old at that price. I have videos on the channel about a Canon 30D that I bought for around $50 on KEH. That's pretty fun to use.
any idea why all the videos i take on it are insanely fuzzy? I've been going through the menu over and over again but no matter what i do the video comes super fuzzy like it has a beauty filter somehow?
Was it always like that? if not then look for something in the menu to reset the camera. It's an old cheap small sensor camera so the fuzzy look could be normal if you are comparing it to a recent smartphone. I used this camera for maybe an hour or two to make this video years ago so I don't have any specific suggestions, sorry.
I just got gifted the Minolta proshot mn53z and I put it to charge I haven't done anything to it yet and the only thing it could do is turn on when plugged in Idk if the camera is defective or the battery
Hi Scott, I just received this camera as a gift for recording my makeup for TH-cam but I am having mixed feeling about it. Thinking of returning it to get another camera close to the price range of this one. What affordable camera would you suggest I get the is at most $350.
$350 is very limited in cameras. At the moment the Canon EOS M6 with a lens is $350 on B&H. That camera is vastly superior to the Minolta. Who knows how long that deal will last. bhpho.to/39bsXlp
Yeah, the M6 should be a great camera for what you are trying to do. It can grow with you as your skills to do video improve. It has a microphone input port, so you can eventually buy an external mic if you want to really get crisp audio compared to in-camera audio (pro tip is to get microphones as close to you as possible without it showing up in the video). Lighting is also very important. Anyways, the M6 would be a great start due to quality autofocus in video and a lot of control. It also has a very large sensor inside compared to that Minolta.
Can you please help me everytime I flim a video it look like my skin does not have texture even a blanket and do I need to change the mode it is really getting on my nerves please help
That's not easy to figure out unless the camera is in my hands. When in doubt, reset the camera (Manual page 76: Setup Menu >> Reset All) and then make sure the top dial is on "P".
Great video! Thanks for the review. I got this for my birthday to take flatlay pics for my online shop. Now you made me wonder if it´s good or not. I haven´t tried it for flatlays yet. What do you think of it for that purpose? Thanks again for a very informative video.
Where could I get a replacement battery. I ordered an NP-120 from Amazon, thinking it would be compatible, but it didnt fit. The compartment would not close at all
Have you tried contacting Minolta directly? www.minoltadigital.com/contact The problem with these companies like "Minolta" that went bankrupt or bought out is that a 3rd party basically just uses the name and tends to provide minimal support (you can see on that webpage that the actual company is "Elite Brands"). The response I got from the camera shop is that it was a popular battery many years back and used by multiple companies, but it's harder to find now. Well I had the same issue. If you look at the Kastar replacement battery there is a little indentation in the center. I used my bench grinder and ground that down flat. Now it may be paper thin, and it still doesn’t latch, but this allows me to push slightly down and latch the door and use these batteries. Don’t get carried away doing this cause you can ruin the battery. I did a little on the top too but I don’t recommend that. I went a little deep but it doesn’t seem to have a negative effect. We’ll see.

That's not something I tried, sorry. This camera can do full manual control so I'd suggest using that. The Moon is surprisingly bright and it moves pretty quickly through the sky. Stars are very dark and doing wide angle is usually the best place to start with those. You will need to experiment and learn on your own. Minolta had the camera's manual on their site (toward the bottom of the page): www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera
A great camera for moon photography is the Nikon Coolpix P900. The zoom on that camera is impressive. I’ve taken moon photos right from my backyard with that camera. I recommend getting a tripod for it though (I use a manfrotto) because the camera does get top heavy when fully zoomed out.
Great review, i just received this camera as a gift. Im 100% a beginner. Would you be able to do a review or informative video on their lenses. Ive tried to research and it only brings me to mostly sony lenses...thanks again great video !!
The lens on this camera doesn't come off. This camera is an all-in-one device. You can only use it as it is without anything else besides a memory card and battery. The reason you are seeing Sony lenses is because Sony bought the "Konica Minolta" company many years ago. Sony used Konica/Minolta technology in Sony's "A-mount DSLR" cameras that had interchangeable lenses. This "Minolta" camera has nothing to do with the old company. They bought the name.
@@ScottJWaldron awww :( That was my fault for not finding reviews on it first. Thanks so much for your reply. I think I will invest in a nikon coolpix down the road. lol
The Nikon Coolpix cameras would be the same as this one. The lenses on those cameras don't come off. If you want a camera that can change lenses look for an "interchangeable lens camera". The cameras I use for these videos are good for beginners. They are called the Canon EOS M100 and Canon EOS M50.
If you don't have the manual, you can download a digital version here: www.minoltadigital.com/manuals-software Phone connection details are on page 77/78. You have to download their app to your phone and go through the process.
If you don't have a manual there is a digital version that you can download here: www.minoltadigital.com/cameras-cat/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera The company also has a contact form if you need help: www.minoltadigital.com/contact The battery is accessible through the door on the bottom of the camera. I haven't touched this thing is years so I can help you with specifics.
I had searched on the internet about it for this video, but I didn't find any specifics. Konica/Minolta sold off all of the camera technology side to Sony according to the wikipedia page. It looks like they still exist and are selling printers as well as business services. They probably sold "Minolta", or doing a long term license of the name. Kind of interesting how it all works on the business side.
@@ScottJWaldron ok so would the canon powershot sx620 be better or would the the sony cybershot wx220 be better? Out of those 2 what one is better performance wise? Or the kodak pixpro az521?
All of these cameras have a sensor that's 1/2.3" in size, which is basically comparable to what smart phones have these days. Image quality goes up based on sensor size: first with these 1/2.3" >> 1" sensors >> micro 4/3 >> APS-C >> full-frame. The main benefit of a camera like this over a phone is being able to have a large zoom lens on it for a cheap price (phones will never be able to fit the big pieces of glass required to make that happen). I haven't used those other cameras besides the WX220 that I have a video like this on. For cameras like this I tend to recommend Sony in general. I think they have a bit better handle on these entry level models. Personally? I'd go with one that can fit in a pocket unless I needed a huge zoom lens range (eg. the Sony WX220 or HX80). Though if I didn't care too much about being able to fit it in a pocket, and didn't need a cheap way to get a lot of zoom... I'd save up more cash and get a Canon EOS M100 (APS-C sensor). I get a lot of questions like this because I do make videos on entry level cameras. Overall, I find them difficult to recommend unless the user specifically needs a lot of optical zoom range in a low price, outside of that I say get a good phone or jump up to larger sensor cameras.
@@ScottJWaldron ok thank you so much! I just need a camera for good quality pics and video. I just can't seem to find much people recommending the minolta. So I might just go with the sony or canon
Page 76 of the manual goes over how to "reset all" of the settings. If that doesn't work then there might be an issue with your camera. If you don't have the paper user manual there is a PDF version on their website: www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera
Honestly, I wouldn't pay much. Likely can't find replacement batteries for it and not anything great image quality wise. No idea on an actual dollar amount...
What you see in the video is what I tried with the camera. I don't there there is any manual focus. There is a manual detailing the camera on this page: www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera
Hi Amy, on page 30 of the manual it talks about focus modes. I'm seeing AF, macro, super macro, and infinity mode. So no actual manual focus, but you can use the AE/AF lock to stop the camera from focusing once it has already. There are more details on how it works in the manual. You can download the manual in PDF format here (link toward the bottom of the page): www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera
Not a bridge camera.. It really just wants you to use auto... only 2 apertures.. the reason that is has a billion shutter speeds.. while the overall picture quality is good, it just really let me down... focuses wanders a lot.. especially on video... and the mic is poor unless you are right next to the camera... get a pentax K1000 and learn photography the real way.....
I'd be surprised if this is still sold. Also, experimenting with film cameras is a decent idea for people that want to though I'd personally suggest a used DSLR or mirrorless camera. Film and developing is an ongoing expense that will be amortized pretty quickly if they go digital at a higher cost. I've made various videos suggesting that people avoid these types of cameras with long optical zoom lenses and small sensors, but marketing from camera companies was so strong back in the early 2000s that people still think they are worthwhile. Generally I'd suggest to anyone starting out to use their phone (some 1st party and 3rd party camera apps offer quite a bit of control and RAW image formats) for as long as they can unless they really need long optical zoom. Otherwise these cameras don't serve much benefit. Yeah, for this specific camera calling it something like a "super zoom" might be a better term than a "bridge camera". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_camera
Scott....thank you so much for your honesty...in your review of the Minolta M35Z.... new to the digital camera world...old school Nikon F1 purchased new as serviceman Vietnam. However discussing the Minolta M35Z as slightly better than a cellular phone. My Motorola phone appears to take better videos than the demo..as you movied the camera M35z around in video mode..it appears out of focus and gittery. Looked very bad. Short clip showing the view through the display screen. Later at end of your demo supposedly video mode but not looking through the display screen...panning out store window was clear and stable. Which is the true account of the video mode. Short video clip through the display screen was terrible. And what about night time photography my phone is not bad....honest opinion of the M35Z nighttime ability and with zoom lens in use. Thanks for your time.
What you see in the video is the extent of what I did with it. My opinion regarding all cameras like this is that if you care about quality then save up money for an interchangeable lens camera with a large sensor inside and lenses to give you the reach you want (and be willing to carry a decent sized camera and lens). Nikon has their Z "mirrorless" mount cameras now. Look at something like the Nikon Z50 two lens kit. If you can use an F1 then you can use one of their new Z cameras with time and a willingness to learn.
I have done a few videos for TH-cam with this camera, or something that is exactly the same, by Praktica, and yes, it has its limitations but the video quality is ok (ish).
My " old" (and by that I mean, previous) Praktica Luxmedia Z35 is EXACTLY the same, just with the Praktica name on it and obviously, not the Minolta! What's going on?? Did the same company that bought Minolta also buy Praktica?
Elite Brands DOES NOT own the Minolta brand name. The brand belongs to JMM Lee Properties, LLC who license it to Elite Brands. LMM Lee Properties LLC also owns such brands as Bendix, AirTouch, Litton, and Slates.
Seeing as you appear to know the specifics of this company... Can you help the other commenters by showing them where they can obtain a second battery for this camera? It seems near impossible.
I don't think those work based on the other comments on this video: * L. Kay McWhorter : "Regular np120 batteries do not fit" * Random Ruka: "I ordered an NP-120 from Amazon, thinking it would be compatible, but it didnt fit. The compartment would not close at all" * Mary Gabriel: "I am having the same problem. Bought a replacement battery that doesn't fit, even though it was a NP 120. Door on camera won't close. Trying to order a battery from Elite. It's a big headache trying to change a battery."

@@ScottJWaldron Thanks..
Can you connect it to phone to get pictures ?
If you don't have the manual, you can download a digital version here:
www.minoltadigital.com/manuals-software
Phone connection details are on page 77/78. You have to download their app to your phone and go through the process.
hello with compatible obs? via hdmi?
No idea, I highly doubt it has that feature.
Wow I was looking at this to help with my TH-cam channel I think I'll just keep using my phone

The company also has a contact form if you need help:

The battery is accessible through the door on the bottom of the camera. I haven't touched this thing is years so I can help you with specifics.
dose this camera use a Np120 battery?
Sorry, no idea. Commenters and I were unsuccessful figuring that out.
Hello. Does the Camera have a built in Mic?
yes (it's not possible to connect an external microphone so the only option is the camera's internal microphone).
Konica/Minolta bought by Sony for the a-mount? Must’ve sold the name I guess?
I had searched on the internet about it for this video, but I didn't find any specifics. Konica/Minolta sold off all of the camera technology side to Sony according to the wikipedia page. It looks like they still exist and are selling printers as well as business services. They probably sold "Minolta", or doing a long term license of the name. Kind of interesting how it all works on the business side.
Wait so how is the video quality? Is it good for recording partys and such?
It's not something I looked at in detail. I'd say a decent current smart phone is going to be better.
My flash isn't working, how do I fix it ?
Page 76 of the manual goes over how to "reset all" of the settings. If that doesn't work then there might be an issue with your camera.
If you don't have the paper user manual there is a PDF version on their website: www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera
can i buy lens extensions or change the lens?
nope
@@ScottJWaldron okay thanks 😕
What price is reasonable for a camera like that??
Honestly, I wouldn't pay much. Likely can't find replacement batteries for it and not anything great image quality wise. No idea on an actual dollar amount...
@@ScottJWaldron thank you for replying. I asked because just purchased one at $349 I'm a beginner on camera. So it it a camera for starters
@@jesmat3420 if you like how it works, sure.
@@ScottJWaldron so it's okay for bigenners. Thank u
How does it focus? Does it have manual focus?
What you see in the video is what I tried with the camera. I don't there there is any manual focus. There is a manual detailing the camera on this page: www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera
Any reviews or word on the MN67z ? From anyone ?
I'm not sure if my local shop still carries Minolta. I'll take a look at some point to see what they have.
I guess it just came out so have been able to find any further info... other then Amazon and Adorama's description
will this accept an external flash?
no
This new company is doing all that's within it's power to make sure the good name of Minolta camera's will be ruined for the future.
can you manually focus?
Hi Amy, on page 30 of the manual it talks about focus modes. I'm seeing AF, macro, super macro, and infinity mode. So no actual manual focus, but you can use the AE/AF lock to stop the camera from focusing once it has already. There are more details on how it works in the manual. You can download the manual in PDF format here (link toward the bottom of the page): www.minoltadigital.com/camerasall/minolta-mn35z-20mp-35x-optical-zoom-wi-fi-bridge-camera
@@ScottJWaldron thank you for the fast response

Shout out to Camera Craft. They are the best.
True!
If you can use an F1 then you can use one of their new Z cameras with time and a willingness to learn.
ok thanks :3
Are these goo for recording TH-cam videos ?
I don't think it would be very good. If you have a newer phone it would probably do a better job, especially with audio.
I have done a few videos for TH-cam with this camera, or something that is exactly the same, by Praktica, and yes, it has its limitations but the video quality is ok (ish).
I think the digital sharpness is to high. If I had that camera I would turn the digital sharpness all the way down.
My " old" (and by that I mean, previous) Praktica Luxmedia Z35 is EXACTLY the same, just with the Praktica name on it and obviously, not the Minolta! What's going on?? Did the same company that bought Minolta also buy Praktica?
Most likely. That elite brands company has at least a few names.
@@ScottJWaldron It's an NP-120 battery. You can find them on ebay.com
I don't think those work based on the other comments on this video:
* L. Kay McWhorter : "Regular np120 batteries do not fit"
* Random Ruka: "I ordered an NP-120 from Amazon, thinking it would be compatible, but it didnt fit. The compartment would not close at all"
* Mary Gabriel: "I am having the same problem. Bought a replacement battery that doesn't fit, even though it was a NP 120. Door on camera won't close. Trying to order a battery from Elite. It's a big headache trying to change a battery."
I bought this camera for my daughter for Christmas and she just got around to trying it out tonight. Keeps getting an error message that the lens cap is on when it isn't! I can't find a fix anywhere on the internet! Brand new 300 dollar paper weight is what this POS camera is!
Dude next time do your review and tryout your camera outdoors, not in your desk taking pics of other cameras 10- ft away.
Try to get some benefit out of the video or move along to something else. These videos are recorded at a camera shop. I have limited options with what I can do with the cameras there.
@@ScottJWaldron He asked a valid question & you reply with 'move along' Seriously the zoom is one of the major features of this camera you could've at least put some emphasis on outdoor photos
@@markpusko2480 it was not possible in this situation. It wasn't my camera to take outdoors. I was working with what I could to produce a video that could help some people. I can't do everything. I can't help everyone.
