He designed the best electric guitar in history, dozens of patents, and had a beautiful wife who played, he had it all. What a legend. This beats anything new on the radio today. And always will.

The M.C. is Jimmie Rodgers, the great singer of "Honeycomb" fame. I'm sure this was from his television show. Good to see Les and Mary. My parents bought a bunch of their LPs when I was a kid. Their music was a staple in our house.

Les Paul was an ace showman especially when miming on tv shows. To see Les real musicianship you had to see him live at The Iridium in New York which I did. He was ace and should have been above the bs he often put out.

Les and Mary were big in the early '50s...In 1955, after opening for Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly decided to pursue a career in music....In 1960, he and Mary Ford received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame....And by 1964 Les was retired and divorced from Mary.

@@derekjones8944 Those clanky tones he got from overdubbing and speeding up the tape reels. There is only one way to get that sound live from a guitar and it is a syth. They did not have them back then so this is obviously air jamming the song to a recording. Sure, he really could play that fast but obviously but it would not sound like that. If you really listen you can hear a "normal" guitar tone in most of the stuff way low in the mix but again that is from overdubbing or maybe he actually was playing very low volume with the recording. Either way, you can hear multiple riffs and solos so with her playing the main rhythm and him playing the lead there would need to be more guitarists to get that sound even if they had syths back then which they did not.

@@evilstalkerhorne Thanks for the info, but I was responding to the concurrence of the other two on the idea/suggestion that no one of the caliber of a Les Paul has shown up on the scene in recent history, when in fact there are scores of them out there - which could easily be discovered by just a quick perusal through youtube if they would only bother to make the effort!

It's a guitar played at half tempo sped up by 2x overdubbed a few times, then he's playing over that in normal tempo, which comes out as an octave lower than the sped up parts.

Flat top LP Custom with homemade pickups, probably the same guitar that eventually wound up with his long suffering( rarely if ever got paid) guitar tech who restored it to playing condition and sold it for 330K over the endless bitching of some members of the so called guitar collector community.
Almost immediately after the introduction of the first Less Paul guitars, Paul rarely played the actual production models.
Gibson would make mostly flat topped husks for him to then carve up and load with all manner of homemade electronics.
Gibson would be wise to make a very limited run of some of these for the few people who want to experience Les' "Paul"...........
Modern technology has put much of what he pioneered into the hands of players at relatively low cost enabling copyists to emulate his sound and recording techniques.
In his lifetime, LP was usually not enamored of anyone who copied his sound.
His relationship with Danny Gatton soured after Gatton, a big fan, presented Les with recordings that Gatton had done in Les' style as a tribute. They never spoke again.
After Les' tremendous successes in the early 1950s with multitracking guitars and Mary Ford's vocals, he became obsessively defensive in his role as not only a musician but all things relating to the electric guitar and the recording methodology.
As years went on, his " act" became more and more of a presentation of himself as the singular inventor of almost everything connected to the electric guitar and recording.
While his contributions are vital to the foundations of post war electric guitar playing and multitrack recording technology , there are many other people he conveniently ignored and/ or fabricated mostly lesser roles for regarding their contributions in constantly retelling his version of events to audiences until the end.

For a while in the ‘70s, Gibson had the “Les Paul Recording” model, which more closely resembled the electronics setups developed and used by the man himself.

@@GH-oi2jf yes. She wanted a baby, and Les wanted her to keep on working so he co-erced her into adopting a baby. His act was mainly faked trick recorded tracks, with Mary singing multi harmonies with herself, and playing remarkable rhythm guitar. After the split, Les quickly faded from the scene as rock and roll became the new wave. Mary learned guitar from her father and brother, who were both excellent jazz guitarists.
