      Let me recommend you another trick on top of this, since the matched eq on the prs still sounds flat compared to the strat, try again with the tone control lower on your prs when feeding the eq matcher, than after the match eq applied, turn it back to 10. This is a trick that works for me. I tried the same thing with a mooer tone capture gtr pedal that does the same thing, to model my strat on my jazzmaster, and it worked better this way, to add the missing extra chime.

    I often find it crazy that companies go into so much detail with artists and spend so much time sculpting pickups. So much can be changed with a bunch of EQ’s after the guitar and pre-amplifier.
    Same kinda thing for Kemper profiles. It totally depends on the guitar as to the results. I managed to match an EMG 81 to a single coil type sound this week and vice versa. Just saw this vid - Can’t believe more people don’t do this!! 🤙

    I love swapping out the 3-position blade switch in HH guitars with a 5-position Megaswitch where the inner and outer coils are on positions 2 and 4. Got some strat/tele sounds out of it without having to pull on a knob.

    Very brilliant Leon thanks for sharing. I’ve been wanting to mimic that single coil tone for cleans for a while. Hopefully that trick will also work well with emg pickups !

  • @batmandeltaforce
    @batmandeltaforce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    AWESOME!!!!! The difference is, the strat in 2+3 pups gives you a comb filter effect, that is impossible to match, but what a great lesson:)

  • @Blavod6V6
    @Blavod6V6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Leon! A quick trick is to apply the full FAB filter ProQ from the tone match to a flat IR, apply a high number of bands, and save the filtered IR. Then add a cab block in your AxeFX with the filtered IR, and it should go even closer than the PEQ block! Let me know if it works for you! Personally i can't do it in the FM3 as we have only one cab block, but a filtered IR is a very good tone sculpting approach...

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That works great too, and is essentially what the Axe tone match does. One downside to this approach is you end up with a lot of very narrow cuts and boosts which can sound strange, which is where smoothing/limited band PEQ comes in. Very interesting!

    • @Blavod6V6
      @Blavod6V6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LeonTodd You are right! very narrow filters can be a problem, especially they change the phase content...

    • @judgegroovyman
      @judgegroovyman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pardon my ignorance but are you two saying you could apply the same approach in the video to a customized IR instead of running a peq plugin?

    • @Blavod6V6
      @Blavod6V6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@judgegroovyman yes, if you apply the peq to a flat IR and then add a cab block with the filtered IR, you end up with similar results (better have a short IR though to avoid adding reverb effect etc.)

  • @bolodmata

    Wow
    Tbh I actually like the eq’d humbuckers more than the single coil. Not gonna lie but as much as I like single coils, the strat is a little too bright sounding but the humbucker is like somewhere in that sweet spot which make it sound absolutely amazing. Thanks for tutorial.
    Gonna try and get the same result using neural dsp and my ebmm axis.

  • @Rickles
    @Rickles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would appreciate a demo going the other way for my strat. Maybe I'll just try to dial it by ear. I don't usually play with eq early in the chain but this shows how much power is there.

  • @kylehowdy

    Great example showing parametric EQ being the most impactful tool in audio. I recently did something similar (not really lol) but I used a parametric EQ before the amp to alter my overall pickup sound a bit. Wanted a little more low end thump and less bite in the high end. Parametric EQ to the rescue, like I installed new pickups!

    The fast easy thing to do to get more single coil-ish tones with a humbucker that so many people miss is to just roll back the volume on your guitar! An ocean of tone possibilities are available if you use that knob as more than an off/full switch.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You mean those knobs do something?! :p

    • @ChristopherOrth
      @ChristopherOrth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LeonTodd haha It would be a fun April fool image to make where the volume is just an on off switch, and tone knob is labeled "correct" and "wrong" at its' edges!

    • @judgegroovyman
      @judgegroovyman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats how Ive been doing it (rolling the volume way off) and now with Leon’s awesome trick I bet Im going to get some killer tones!

    • @mrbaiser4133
      @mrbaiser4133 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A single coil has a higher resonance peak than a humbucker. If you lower the volume, you actually lower the resonance peak even further. A higher pot value (1M) would work to a degree, or a switchable resistor between volume pot and ground.
      Another approach: add a switchable buffer to the guitar. It separates the pickups from the cable capacitance, which gives you a higher resonance frequency.

    • @veglord4481
      @veglord4481 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, rolling down the volume cuts trebble unless you have a trebble bleed circuit. I guess what it achieves is gain matching, that can be enough if you like the fuller sound of a Humbucker.

    Reminds me of the HBE Detox and Mad Professor Underdrive eq pedals. 🎛️ Three bands and a volume control are sometimes all you need to transform a humbucker into a disorted amp into a single coil into a clean channel. Not to be the guy who makes everything about Ty Tabor, but you throw one of those in an expression pedal controlled effect loop... 🔥

    Hi Leon, first of all a really exceptional job! Excuse me but I don't have the possibility to do an approximation work like the one you did (and in what excellent way you did it!), therefore I ask you if it is possible to buy a PEQ block, like the one you made, which allows me to bring the sound of the neck humbucker closer to the sound of a neck vintage style single coil. Thank you so much anyway for this great work!
