I'm all about counterfeits if the big brand thinks they can get away with charging too much. The manufacturer makes more and I pay less. What I do a lot of is repairs, especially with electronics and in recent years it's been a real pain to buy components that aren't fake thanks to China. Many times I've tried even buying from reputable supplier only to find that even they got hoodwinked. It's a real pain.
About 10-12 years ago, china started the boasting/campaign/propaganda about making their own brands and also proudly stated nothing they couldn't make. Today, they still proudly stuck at copycat level, and most likely it will remains that way or getting worse for the next few decades.

If they have 500k items that they sell to whoever wants the good quality "knock off" for say $120. It will get sold at a significant profit margin

I think it just goes to show how quality of so called designer goods has dropped that people can not tell the fakes from the real, 30 years ago what set them apart was the high quality of the material and everyone can tell that, now companies are greedy and charge a lot for crap so theres no difference, I still have my 1990s doctor martin boots and I bought a new pair last year, if it wasn't for the fact I bought them from Doctor Martins own store I would think they were fake, the quality is like £30 boots the leather is just cheap stiff, thin stuff now and they can't even be bothered lining them anymore, my 30 year old pair is soft napper leather and lined, its also got a nice polished finish on them that does not crack, the new ones are clearly plastic coated to shine. we need to teach the younger people who grew up with this crap that lasts five mins how to tell quality products and to look at material and construction not names. All these poor products are bad for the planet, people need to buy less and buy quality that lasts a lifetime our parents used to have furniture and products passed down in the family, our products and furniture will be lucky to last 5 years.
