- More children are in the care system, but accommodation is in short supply - and that means thousands of youngsters are being sent many miles away from their homes, their friends and their schools to start new lives with foster parents or in specialist placements.

That can leave children feeling lonely and isolated - yet Channel 4 News has seen data indicating that councils in England aren't fully recording their experiences.
This is one young woman's story about the racism she suffered when she was moved into care - around a hundred miles from everyone she knew.

When I was called names because of my skin colour, I told my dad and he took Me on long holidays to west Africa. It was, the best thing he did. I began to love my culture and myself. My dad told me to be proud of who I am. Thank you dad.

This is so common unfortunately. I worked as a Social Worker for 22 years and there is so much racism when it comes to black and dual heritage children. Even when I’ve spoken out about the amount of black children placed in locations in the middle of nowhere where they don’t see any other black people and also where their Foster Carers are White or Asian. There’s a lack of cultural awareness and understanding about the cultural needs of ethnic minority children and it’s sad.
I think that's a great point, but how many black people actually foster children? I would consider it is a small, small minority of black people who are fostering or adopting. If there aren't enough carers to look after them, then inevitably the children will be sent to white homes. It is shame that so many black and mixed raced end up in the system in the first place.
I agree. It's often not known due to the secrecy and confidentiality of these matters. Racism and race is a huge factor in care proceedings. It is actually common to see immediate caucasian family refuse to take on biracial children simply due the so called cultural differences. It is heart breaking to hear this.
@@D1Snr yes it really is. The other side is that Caucasian families take on children from other ethnicities but then don’t provide for their cultural needs. I’ve had to literally make lists of hair and body items, food and other products for black children, as well as even identify hairdressers to take them to. That wasn’t my role as a Social Worker bit Foster Carers chose not to do this.

I went through the same situation
£447 a week fostering allowance for a British child, £588 for an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child. The problem starts when you put monetary value on children’s lives and futures. This young lady is beautiful and articulate, you have to be strong to survive the UK care system. I really hope her and her siblings can build a strong unit
Exactly. Too many people are doing this for financial reasons which is totally wrong. Also, there needs to be way more support to actually keep families together. Once social workers get involved then you know that the outcome will not be good. The care system should be absolute last resort when every other option to support the kids within their natural family has been exhausted.

I am a nurse (meaning has diminished due to a recently convicted baby killer) but ai generally have a want to care for others, especially children because as a RMN I see the results of what happens to children when they are abused etc. RE: money, I am referring to why there would be a large discrepancy in the money given per week?

The system isn’t fit for purpose
We do not know how bad the fighting was, we do not know the circumstances. Seriously, some people's comments.
Maybe one of the twins was abusive. I had a set of twins as coworkers and one of them was abusive of the other, would call her names, put her down, take advantage of her and take other people's side against her. It was and is a really toxic relationship. You would think twins would be really close to each other and be supportive but it isn't always like that. I think growing up one of the twins was given preferential treatment (the abusive one) and the other was neglected.

They have been relocated to an entirely different location
They also begged to stay together.
In a lot of these cases foster carers refused to take cases where there is more work and instead separate the children rather than put in the work.

I’m speaking as an insider so I can assure you my comment is very valid. The system is not fit for purpose, the laws around children Are also outdated and not fit for purpose.
The entire system has been destroyed by neoliberalism and needs a radical social work approach.
Also, I’m not against temporary separation, I do however have an issue with what has occurred in this case when considering that the siblings in this case begged to stay together.

The way you label this story is problematic. Stop the click bait. That young lady doesn't hate being black. She has a problem with white supremacist views.
The label is a quotation from that young lady herself and not problematic. Do you see the quotation marks? Did you watch the video we’re she said those words.
She did hate being black but doesn’t any more. She has a problem with the racism she experienced in her childhood and the poor decisions made by the foster care that put her in this situation. The quotation is the clickbate because is a shocking thing to say, and gets attention. Then the rest of the label adequately titles the content.

A young child was trained to hate who she is, and when she does, you say that's what she feels when society taught her to hate herself. You take the quote and say see, it's all her. She has a problem with living in a white supremacist culture that not only hates black people but also hates poor people.
I understand her totally I moved from London to Blackpool. I remember the first day I got called the N word I did not even know what that means I just laughed it off. But when it continued I told my parents and they told me the truth. The bullying continued and increased to physical violence after 5 years at that school getting abuse every single day it made me into hating white people.
For years I hated white people.when I finally had the money to move back to London aged 25 my mental health improved and now I have friends of all races. I hope if there are any kids out there going through the same thing I hope they get support and I wish them the best.

Yes, it happens when people are in countries they are not supposed to be in. Natives, indigenous don't like to be colonised and resist the invaders as it's an unnatural situation. Non-whites think they have a human right to be in white people's nations, when they don't. The problem here is that she should be in her own people's homeland, and not in Britain/Europe, living as a colonialist in indigenous British people's racial homelands.

6:35 shocking that there's such a discrepancy in the recording of data between minority kids and white kids. Really suggests people in the system care less and do a worse job. That or they're being moved unreasonable distances and so the workers are "forgetting" to record this on purpose to avoid scrutiny.

I have a 2 year old daughter and i can confirm that little kids definitely dont see colour. My little girl loves every nursery friend she has be it white, black or asian. She cuddles them all and gets so excited to see them after every weekend. So this just shows that parents be it intentionally or not teach kids racism. I wish her amazing life. She deserves it x

There needs to more education about racism, particularly highlighting the fact that is based on ignorance of skin colour determination, and that at one time, our ancestors were all dark skinned.

Black children should not be placed in white foster care homes . I was placed in white foster care homes and it messed me up .
The parents are to blame and should feel ashamed of themselves. May that shame follow them. I had English, Chinese and Vietnamese friends growing up and we learnt so much from each others cultures. Racism is taught and those kids don’t know any better
I remember being in Junior school in the 80's. I HATED the colour of my skin. I had a bath once with a brillo pad, trying to scrub the brown off my skin to make me white. The bath was all red afterwards. Mum was so upset, got some proper licks!!!!

I went through racism in foster care my story is deep .
What a sad indictment of our society these days and a perfect example of the utterly inept, brutal and useless Social Services. I for one gained the impression that this stunningly pretty girl is articulate, sensitive, intelligent and thoroughly decent. I sincerely hope that she finds a better, comfortable place and goes on to lead a happy, healthy and fulfilling life surrounded and supported by kind, decent and loving people. God bless her. X
This is so incredibly sad, I wish this polite and well spoken young lady all the best. I do believe that this was a problem for many children of all backgrounds, my best friend (white male) also went into care at a young age along with his siblings, first together, then with one sibling, then separated to different homes in different parts of the country and then abused both physically and sexually. He was also bullied in school for being different and talking different!! I totally agree that where ever possible children should be kept as close to what they know as possible. I can not imagine for any of them how terrible it may be being separated from their families and cultures that they are familiar with, my heat goes out to them all!!!!

Not against interracial marriage but this is a good example of where someone was programmed to view whiteness in supremacy and so there choice of mate reflected that. That’s how powerful white supremacy is. It can cause you to have disdain or contempt for your culture, appearance (e.g. body shape, hair), people of the same race as you, and yourself.
Well, in a way, can you blame the lady? She was bullied for being black, and developed self-hatred which she acknowledges. At the most crucial time in her development, she was absent black community and black role-modelling. A lot of black people aren't even able to admit to the levels of self-hatred that they experience, but it is evident in their behaviours.

The care system is pretty much horrendous for any child involved, but for black children there additional threats. Being sent to a racist environment is a very real possibility. The local authorities know this and race is a huge factor when placing a child for adoption or foster care. Thats why its important for immediate family to step up, but unfortunately sometimes there is no immediate family.
The sad thing about bullying is that bullies will always find a reason to bully. White children get bullied. TBH - many white children in care have exactly the same complaints - being moved far from home, being seperated, being bullied. I don't believe her experiences are only because of her race. Like many teens in care there are behavioural issues that lead to special units. I think this report is very one sided and presents her in a very angelic light. I bet a lot of behavioural issues were part of her journey. Falling pregnant not the best choice either. As a white child, who was seperated from 2 siblings, spent time in a children's home and then 2 fostercare placements, i also was bullied but that had a lot to to do with low self-esteem and poor social skills. I was in an aggressive family and had no communication skills and being aggressive. I had PTSD that came with complexities wrt fitting in. That is what alienated me. Pity this investigation exaggerates to presents Louise as a victim. That is a mindset i fought to get rid of. "Put things in her hair, back of the class, A* student (🤔), wearing a shirt like a nun (?)"....the contrived narrative is embarassing apparent. Best thing i learned from my childhood was to cooperate with the adults around me and to stop acting liked a victim and take responsibility for my behaviour rather than blaming.
People like you think that they're not racist. However hold views that say otherwise. Let's be clear she and non-Poc children suffer many of the same issues. However dealing with marginalisation of being in an environment where you are different racially is on top of the shared issues. But you'll rationalize an experience because you're in denial about racial abuse.

The main focus was the hostility and racism that was endured while living in an all white area and being bullied bc of her melanated beautiful skin. Far from the truth black carers in a care home in Paisley are touching there skin when asked to do certain tasks they don't like, basically saying I'm not doing that cause I'm black. Channel 4 woke tv

Do yourself a favor and take another look at yourself in the mirror and see how beautiful you are. You have nothing to be ashamed of. I think many white girls wish they were as beautiful as you regardless of skin color. Hold your head up, be proud of who you are and learn to love yourself. I hope the best for you in your life!❤❤🤗
The elephant in the room is: why did she end up in care? Why did her family break down? Life is not easy but it's exponentially harder when you do not have a family.
The care system, schools or workplaces cannot compensate for what a child needs.
The other question: are children of colour more likely to be taken into care and why? Are social services more hyper vigilant with families in those instances? Would they remove a child from a white family for exactly the same reason? Maybe not but let's ask the questions.
That in no way excuses the racism she has experienced. Bullying is so traumatic.
Social Services are in dire need of training, reform and transparancy , social workers abuse too, there is abusers in every government dept 🙏
Everyone goes through some sort of racism it is just that some races get it worse than others.
My advise to my sister is please come home, Africa is yo home just select any country in Africa by your choice u will be welcomed our beloved sister,(the grass is green on this side)
An unfortunate personal account. There will always be individuals who have certain prejudices.
Thankfully we have a myriad of laws and processes that cover these issues. Those who feel they are being affected by such factors should seek advice on how to report them.
