    The dev (1 man) is actually from New Zealand. You also can pres Esc to travel back to the menu/drawers

    That's a pretty good layout for somebody's first. There's a lot of controls that frankly need to have better signage. Most elements have snapping, and other options if you toggle them on with your function keys. You can also go through the track drawers a bit and you'll find the custom track feature, which does give you much more control with the pieces, allowing you to set radius and length, and another set of drawers allows you to apply paints for bridge types, electrification, etc.
    A big thing to remember is that Franks/Gauge (Who is actually a New Zealander, not Brazilian.), made the game around the "Top of the South" layout being a model train set, and the initial prop and trackwork system was exceedingly basic, and since the game gained more traction than he expected, its slowly evolved into this great sandbox that it is now.

    • @bluewizard
      @bluewizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the feedback. No idea why I thought he was Brazilian. I went to the website and for some reason picked it up there. If I do a follow up video I'll make sure I'll add a correction.
      The layout I created is indeed very very basic due to time limitations and I'm not that familiar with the game. Also it followed a formula I used on a multi train game vid I did a couple of weeks ago. On that vid I looked a 6 games that can used to create a model railway. In each game I did the same thing, show a layout that looks good to show off the game and then build a oval knowing it would likely not look good but while doing it talk about how easy it is our isn't to do and things I like and dislike. The only thing I wish I'd put into this video is the score board I used on the previous video placing this game with the others.
      I play allot of these types of games and actually think the stylalized nature of the assets is a feature and makes the game stand out. A number of my regular audience wouldn't go near this game because of it but I certainly like it. The assets basic nature also greatly helps the game with is FPS. I bought the game when it first came out. At that point it was only in VR. I had a less powerful PC back then (i5 6th gen, GTX 1060) and it struggled playing the game so I never did anything with it. I have a feeling if the assets were any more complex it wouldn't have run at all. That said once he added in desktop mode I actually tried the game on a really low end laptop just to see if it would run and it did easily (surface go). I looked around a large layout and it ran fine. There's no way you'd want to play it on that device but it's certainly possible. What I took from that is the main reason moving forward not to improve the assets quality is VR. The simpler the better. The only thing I'd add on are more paint options. The ability to paint a texture onto an asset such a brick or slate (you mentioned brick types but do you mean a single colour or a brick texture? I noticed ways of painting walls etc but actually paints that looked like brick, just single colours). And also the ability to paint splodges directly onto the main board of any size. Yes there are ways ring this such as placing something in the ground and painting that but painting any part of the ground would be better.
      I did notice the custom radius track piece. I can certainly see it might be useful in certain situations. The most important bit of track in my opinion though is the filler bit. You have a gap, you place this bit of track and it fills the space. This single bit of track is the reason I did the video. Im not a fan of set pieces of track and think dynamic track where you pull it into any length and direction is always the way to go. But this sole bit of track makes it possible for nearly anyone to create a layout of any shape just like you could with dynamic track so I'm a big fan of it.
      The largest downside to the game I see is the lack of key binding. I'm left handed and had to use an external bit of software to do that. Its an oversight for such a polished game and one large reason I've always left this game to the side. If I hadn't of come across the external software that allows you to re-assign keys without pc reset I couldn't play the game. The external software is easy to set up and use and once closed down the keyboard is back to normal.
      I like this game and I can see why allot of other people do too. It is different from other model train games and that's a good thing. It does need some more refinement. It likely needs a larger fan base to help with modding which will in turn bring more fans. But most importantly it's a fun game and that's what games should be.

      Yeah... it could be a nice add-on but I don't see it happening. Its a single dev and I would imagine programming multiplayer would take a long while to do. I really like the game but it does have short-comings which need to be done first.

    While Rolling Line game itself is just wonderful. I've no VR equipment Game functions just great PC wise. Creating models for RL in editor programs such as Blender / 3D-Builder / others, is a learning experience in themselves, they too somewhat go hand in hand alongside Rolling Line. Now I must warn if your not a seasoned modder, &, not part of the cult. You will indeed be shunned, belittled harassed to no end. Sadly, mistreatment go hand in hand alongside Rolling Line. Others have already jumped ship. While the game is very reasonable cost wise, perhaps may be better spent elsewhere. Best advice from personal experience can offer. "Watch Your Back" / "Don't Crawl Into A Foxhole Beside Any Of The RL-PD Dept."

      @@bluewizard Played all evening... Been having fun with it. Realized I suck at "building things"... My biggest complaint so far is not understanding why I can't have the switch tracks go the way I want them to go, I can make them shift left/right, but I can't swap the direction of the actual track piece; example the switch is at the north side of the track and I want it at the south side.

      At some point certainly. I have to think of something that's different from last time though. I've certainly been thinking about it lately.
      There are some vr train games such as Trainscape. If you search on Steam for Railroad and then filter that with vr a few come up. Not many but a few

      @@bluewizard I grew up with the West Somerset steam railway running past the back of my childhood home, it was so close that it gently shook the ancient oak foundations. It was wonderful to see the towering giants of steam billowing past on a regular basis throughout the summer, even if it did bring sizeable brush fires with it from time to time lol.
      It would be good to find something that could allow me to relive those wonderful times (if you know of anything?).
      I now sadly live much closer to the East Somerset railway line, after many years of working abroad I’m finally back and it’s nice to share in my 5 year olds love of trains, even if he is too young for us to let him try VR.
      You spoke in your recent video covering the Christmas sale, about being old as you’d played many of the old classics on release, I know that feeling well, 38 and I feel going on 65 hah.

    • @bluewizard
      @bluewizard  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like bliss living near a Steam Railway. I've visited various but have never lived near one. There are some fun train games out there but none of them give the same feeling as travelling on a real Steam train. Maybe Century of Steam will when it comes out. It looks interesting but who knows.
      I'm 50. My first game system was the Atari 2600. My first computer was a zx81. Next I had an Atari 800 XL with a tape deck. Crikey games took a while to load on that leading onto an Atari ST with a floppy drive which at that point was an upgrade lol. Games still could take 20 mins to load though. My first actual pc was back in the late 90s but I had stopped playing games by that point. I started again when my daughter wanted to play Minecraft. I played lots with her which were good times. When first thinking about it, seeing how tech has moved on, how games have come along from those first games I played feels amazing, but then I remember my age and the fact those first games were 30 years ago lol. It feels less amazing.
      So you're 38. It starts to go down hill from 40 lol. Look forward to the next 2years haha.
