I've been using my PPG Smoke headset for five months now. Previously I was flying with a MicroAvionics headset and then a Sena build. I've been extremely impressed with the PPG Smoke implementation. It works better than my prior headsets for music, aviation radio, phone calls, Gaggle audio cues, etc. It also has a great form-factor. The buttons take a bit of time to get used to, but I almost always fly with gloves and have been able to find what I want reliably. I want it to record all audio that I hear, but I can understand that some people may prefer it be limited to their voice. One thing I'd add to your review is to ensure that the mic is facing the pilot's mouth correctly. The concave (indented) section of the mic needs to face the pilot directly, otherwise noise cancellation and audio pick-up will not function correctly.
4:10min i had to go back 3 times to make sure you really put that text in! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 freakin brilliant! almost spat my cereals out just now. continue watching
@@AveryFlies oh for sure! i had that thought first second so i had to go back and check if you put the text there or not. and you did. had a little chuckle attack here🤣
I bought one of these headsets at full price last year. I got a single flight out of it before it crapped out. Ryan hasn't been super great at responding to emails. I want to love this headset, but I need one that actually works.
I'm the proud owner of this version 2, and a version 1 ( which I've had for about 2 years). Audio sounds fantastic! I still feel this is the best unit out there with a few flaws. Only thing I've been little annoyed with on this version 2 is a higher vibration frequency thing going on upon takeoff or at really high rpms. I was able to hear it on takeoff in audio of this video too Don't know if it is mic thing, a vibration thing between the mounts and the ear cups, or what. Great review!
If that vibration sound increases with engine rpm, it might be RF from the motor's ignition. This mod could help reduce that: th-cam.com/video/CuvawY6gAi8/w-d-xo.html
Great job on the review Avery..You did better than I did :) I agree with everything you said about it..I have 2 of them..the mic on my 1st one was bad so I just used the mic from the 2nd one :)
What I can say, is that the revision is substantially better in all ways. Hesdset pro is coming as well, it’s got significantly better PNC for those of you demanding more.
Glad to see they really did send some out. I bought one, got the confirmation email that mine was getting ready for shipment, then got another email stating they oversold them and I really didn’t get one. I just figured the ppg smoke guy was a big scammer. Maybe just a screw up on his part but I wouldn’t buy anything from the guy now
I have the same helmet, and changed the chin stitching - can’t see why it’s in that position in the first place. I took the visor off too - depth perception is reduced with it I found.
Hi mate sorry off topic but could i get your opinion on the split leg harness. The harness I am using I don't seem to be able to get right, if i have the straps set so I can actually get into the seat I can't staighten my back/walk on the ground. Thanks
I love the split leg for its ground handling. It is very easy to run with. Since there isn't really a seat, your leg straps are the seat, I've also never had an issue with getting into or out of the seat. The weight shift is not super good on a split leg, and some times a little tight in the crotch, so I have to adjust around more in flight compared to a normal harness. Overall I like it, and it is a lighter weight than most other harnesses.
Check out Mike Can Fly, he used my motor with a split leg after ~8 flights on a normal harness and might be able to give you some additional insight. th-cam.com/users/shortsFwwGfpm4jAE?si=0cCyaCJUMSoJhin6
@@AveryFlies thanks so much for the reply mate I'll ask Mike also. I might give one a go. I baught a parajet v2 and I think the harness may be a little small so need to possibly replace and these look good
When the news broke that there were a bunch of defects. Had to be about 2 months ago now. I lucked out, I wanted to review it but couldn't afford to, so when the sale hit I jumped on it quick and luckily got a working headset
Well, it's not fake, I bought this headset there and they sent it to me on the mail. Sorry you're having a bad time with him, but Ryan is a real guy and not a scammer.
I purchased many items from this company over the years, and never had any issues. Ryan does get a bit sensitive if you are a jerk in your communications to him (never been an issue for me), but other than that the products work great and always had timely service.

Great review! Waiting on the Pro model too! Have you heard any updates on the availability?
Just emailed them about that this week, and they said keep an eye out for big news coming next week. So hopefully soon!
Thanks for the great review. Looks like a nice product.
Hopefully, there will be issues with the second batch so I can pick one up for $99 too.
Lol, I dont think they're going to let any slide with issues for take 2!

@@rrobets1983 Personally, I am going to pick up a headset pro. If it works the way it should, it will be my new go to. Looking forward to it

Yeah, that was pretty crummy. I can understand both sides of it, but that situation definitely does not help the company's reputation
I was surprised with just basic glasses on, I didn't feel like I needed a visor or goggles
Yeah, same here. Not a visor guy.

@@AveryFlies Dang I completely missed that. Well done on grabbing a bargain.
Thanks for the video Avery. We’re working on replacements now.
That company looks like fake one. You pay and they never answered. This guy Ryan ignored refunds request. Really better to find other solutions

Glad to hear that but I paid 540$ and this guy disappeared.
Wow, that's not ok. I hope you get your money back then. Doesn't match my experience, but also doesn't make it okay.
