  • Mont-Saint-Michel is an amazing 17-acre tidal island in Normandy, France (a 4-5 hour drive west from Paris). It's accessible via a causeway during low tides but essentially becomes an island during high tides (in 2007k but not now)! The range in tides is 46 feet!
Mont-Saint-Michel was dangerous during our visit because there were no restraints, other than signs, for people walking into beach-like areas that would quickly become underwater during the rush of high tidal waters (6 feet per second in some areas)! This video shows how fast the waters rise and also shows the inner part of the island with shops, restaurants, etc. A musical egg-beater is shown near the end of the video.
Mont-Saint-Michel has an incredible history (as a prison, as a strategic defensive stronghold, and as a tourist attraction under German control during World War II).
    Video taken in September 2007.
    11:28 minutes long.
