As a German who grew up in Munich, this episode always reminds me of a funny story. This episode was first broadcast on free TV in Germany in 2011 and in Austria in 1996. I was camping as a teenager in Italy in the summer of the 70s. When I went to get pizza for myself and my friends in the nearby village, this episode was on Italian TV, in Italian language of course, so I didn't understand anything properly. I was surprised that there are Star Trek series that I don't know. Later I kept asking friends that there must be an episode in which Kirk and the others beam into a Nazi world. Nobody knew about it, and so at some point I thought I had probably just dreamed it. Until this millennium when I got a DVD box with all the episodes on it. Only then did I realize that this episode really existed, but had been ignored for a long time in Germany for political reasons.
From my understanding, it wasn't just ignored. It was outright banned. I think it's a shame that almost any content containing Nazis got censored for years. There are a lot of great shows and content. For example, I love Hogan's Heros. Most of the characters are enjoyable, even the germans. Especially, Sgt. Schultz. He shows that not all germans were bad in that time period. He was a toymaker who was forced into the war in unfortunate circumstances.
The "Nazis" speak in quite a monotone voice. Some might say it's bad acting, but I think it actually makes them somewhat creepy. In a "robotic" sort of way, I mean.

Notice folks, the wide screen tv whare Kirk and Spock are watching the Nazi marches, and the picture of John Gill. Now, for some trivial time. Melcon there is actor Skip Homnier who came back in season three episode, The Way To Eden as Doc. Severn, also Ed McCreedy who was in past Star Trek episodes is s SS Officer in this episode just as Frank Devcio, not sure of his spelling of his name as he was a stand in ax well as stunt double in other Star Trek episodes.
Casting directors are quite conservative, as well as pressed for time. They much prefer to hire actors they've worked with successfully before, or at least those whose resumes (and talent agents' recommendations!) are sufficiently well-regarded to vouch for their suitability. The TV rookie or ingénue has a -1 next to their name -- one reason it's so hard to break into Hollywood. In the era before VCRs, re-use of established actors across episode as different supporting characters could not be as easily detected as today, and was thought to hardly matter. Dr. Who, among other series, is still doing it.
For some reason, I’m also seeing that Melcon actor as also the leader of the primitive villagers forced to serve the mechanical “Vaal”. I could be wrong, but I’m picturing that guy in that episode as well.
Hipster Spock is a thousand times scarier than Nazi aliens. He'd reason using a breed of logic that's way too obscure for Kirk or McCoy to have even heard of.
Ok, so the Zeons, who have space travel, fly uninvited to Ekos, whose people don't have space travel, to subvert and destroy the Ekosian culture and the poor Zeons are upset that the Ekosians unite and tell the Zeons to GTFO Ekos? Seems legit.
