Bollywood is not a National industry it's also a regional industry. And we south languages are giving a very hard hitting competition to bollywood and they are not able to bear it. Tamil movies like Roja were hits many, many years ago. Even now Indian 2 is being released as a pan India venture. Kamal Haasan is a well known star pan India star who was cast in Kalki also.
The thing is 57% bollywood movies in last 25 yrs are remake of Telugu and Tamil movies. Now they are directly dubbing their own movies to Hindi audience. Ex of remakes: wanted, kick, Baaghi, Baaghi 2, rowdy rathore, ready, son of sardar, anjaana anjaani, gazini. List is quite long.

It's mostly telugu cinema for now. I know end of the day It's indian cinema but I want people to know how big of these industries are just like bollywood, whether it's tollywood or Kollywood. They have huge productions, the quality nothing less than average Hollywood film. For example tollywood have ramoji film city bigger than Bombay film city and its the largest film city in the world. Most of the big films shoots happen there, and the difference is the budget invested in tollywood is cheaper than in bollywood.. They can make high-quality films in lesser money . Its important to credit the particular industry and production houses for the growth of Indian cinema and ofcourse overall South Indian industries are giving films which has substance like Malayalam and tamil and quality from telugu and kannada industries

Bahubali might have been an immediate cause but the real reason why South has become popular is because of movies like Indra and Mass running in Set Max etc … these movies made North Indians get used to watch dubbed movies which is why many were willing to watch Bahubali and dubbed movies henceforth!!
OTT actually enhanced other regional movies like Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada but it was the Telugu movies which touched North Indian mass commercial audience ( audiences in small towns and villages) in a big way

* 90's & 2000's Almost every Telugu Star VENKATESH was remake by ANIL KAPOOR
* From 2010 Almost 75% of Telugu & other South films was remakes.

In my opinion the best actor in India is Monhanlal , for me at the same level that Marlon Brandon, Al Pacino, Paul Newman , his acting is amazing, worth watching. Malayalam have small budgets movies, but they have good scripts.
