For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

The 30-06 shooting 165 Partitions was used by my grandad to kill all of the game in the lower 48 plus sheep, caribou, and inland grizzlies in Alaska. The rifle is a pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight that still shoots 3/4” groups at 100 yards at 2800 fps. Not too shabby for an old cartridge.

BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY INACCURACIES
The historical stuff was full of a lot of urban legends, and never underestimate the animosity of 308 guys. Not all of them, but there is a dedicated group of them thst have a real chip on their shoulder about 30-06. Kind of like the old 9mm vs 45 and 1911 vs glock guys.
I’ve personally told Ron 3 times that the Spanish didn’t have spitzer bullets during the Spanish American war. It sounds like a small detail but it’s very misleading. The reality is the Spanish had round nose like us. Their advantage was they had an extra 200 fps of velocity a higher sectional density and most of all stripper clips. See we had the Krag with a weird side loading mechanism that you dump loose rounds in while they had guided stripper clips. It had absolutely nothing to do with spitzer bullets.
I enjoy this channel. However history is not the channels strong point. I would suggest anyone avoid the history videos?
I don’t think it deserves getting hated on. However I can understand why people get frustrated. I mean it’s kinda a “stay in your lane” concept?
@@sinisterthoughts2896to be fair the 7.62x51 actually had more muzzle energy than the military load of .30-06. So if you go by military standards the .308/7.62 is far superior to .30-06 in almost every relevant way. Newer powder made the .30-06 length advantageous and got you up to 3,000 foot pounds. However the military load is usually less than 2,500 if memory serves.
The thing is the .30-06 is old long and needless in it’s capacity. The main advantage is with heavier bullets. So I think there’s a disconnect where some people don’t understand the .308 used to be hotter than the .30-06. It’s a matter of lost/forgotten knowledge.
@@danielcurtis1434it took some digging but I’ve confirmed that the Spanish Mausers used a 172.8 grain round nosed bullet. Thank you - I’ve read that old wives tale so many times about spitzer bullets being the key development for the Spanish during our war with them. The stripper clip facilitating reloading makes more sense as a game changer.
My go to cartridge. Very versatile without the recoil of the magnum roads
The 30/06 was Jack O’Conner’s wife’s favorite HEAVY rifle she used for big game up to elephant using 220 FMJ bullets. As Jack’s 375 H&H had just too much recoil for her. Can’t argue it worked!!!

the 1903 was an amazing weapon when sporterized for hunting. my grandmother had one and harvested many a deer with it. my great uncle inherited it or i would have it in my gun closet right now. it was amazing. the Springfield armory did a wonderful job with that weapon.
America’s cartridge 30.06. It’s seen service in every theater throughout the world. And it’s still dominates to this very day.

It does still dominate. Ever new cartridge is compared to the '06.
Why a lot of Americans hunters did not promote 30.06 Garand auto for hunting rather wasting time on the rotten Mosin milsurp with poor bolt extraction!

Great video, the ‘06 is my favorite caliber. I have a Model 70A from the late 1970s and my wife bought me a US Rifle Cal .30 M1 for Christmas several years back. The enbloc “ping” may not be as relevant on an active battlefield as all the noise and commotion going on, would obscure something as minor as a “ping”. It has never been substantiated in any of the articles I’ve read referring military historical documentation. To save money as a teenager, I reloaded with an 80 grain lead bullet that I cast myself. I did lighten the powder load but had no idea how fast it was going. If I shot at a piece of steel culvert it would leave about a half inch hole. I figured that the wheel weight lead was really squishing out to make such a big hole.
I agree that ping sound being heard in combat is such a myth.
My favorite cartridge, in the last 25yrs I have used everything from 22-250 to 45-70 and 300wm and everything in-between and yet I still came back to the 30-06, it just works.

I believe the left-handed Psalm quoting sharpshooter was in "Saving Private Ryan," not "Sergeant York." The '03-A4 is what my father carried in Normandy; although when he hit the beach he said he picked up a Garand from "a fellow who didn't need it anymore." Tough times and tough men. Wow such detailed historical accounts! Great job Joseph & Ron. I avoided the 30-06 in my misguided youth but have now seen the light. Took it to Africa in a M70 Super Grade and it is just brilliant, so smooth so mild in recoil and very effective. I found the Sako 170gr Blade (all copper) ammo just superbly accurate that I no longer reload for it.
Great time to give homage to the greatest cartridge from our greatest generation…
My M1 Garand is my go to anything rifle, bear, deer, coyotes on the farm, 2 legged vermin, tannerite fun. It handles all my needs in my beautiful Ozarks. I'd trust on anything here in North America.

Shot my biggest buck with a sporterized 03. Original 165 Barnes x bullet 200 yards. 11 point field dressed 227 lbs. Great old rife
I took my first several deer with my grandfather's (serial no dates it to 1925) Win Mod 94 30-30. My father one hunting season told me to use his M1 Garand. I took the next 2 deer with his M Garand. As a 130lb teenager, let me tell you that I did not like carrying that M1 around. Today, almost 50 yrs later I own my grandfathers Model 94 and my own M1 Garand. I love both rifles. All my children have grown up shooting both rifles.
Years ago when I was a young teenager,I bought my first deer rifle,a Remington 788 in 243.I was proud of that rifle and loved it,but shortly thereafter,it was stolen.Then we got a check from the insurance,and I could get just about anything I wanted,within reason,so I poured over magazine articles reloading manuals,and anything I could get my hands on,trying to determine what to get.I wanted a gun and cartridge combo that would handle anything in North America,figuring that I may not have the money for a new gun,if and when the chance came for me to travel and hunt.After long deliberation,I settled on a Ruger M77 in 30/06.Ive had that gun for over forty years and have never regretted my decision.I have owned and hunting with other cartridges,and many of those guns have come and gone,but not that one,it's always been my go to gun,and somehow always to be in my hands.I was only 15 when I made that choice,and consider that to have been the wisest decision I have ever made.
30-06 unbelievable cartridge, so versatile to load, hey Ron I have a 1903 a3 built in the 40s, I believe nra American rifleman did an article about the government ordering 100,000 for ww2 effort in 1943 or 44, and Remington was struggling to get them out fast enough and hired smith corona to help, I think if I remember article right , war ended before the order was complete. The 1903 a3 I have was sporterized by my grandfather , who did this as a hobby to make side money, the one I got from my dad was never finished, so I got it finished and was the first to fire it. Also it’s a smith corona. I added a timmney trigger with a vintage scope, viva la 30-06. Thanks for your great videos! Also worked up a load with the Barnes 130grttsx, out of the 22” barrel at a moderate charge I’m getting 2970fps, awesome!
America’s cartridge 30.06 is the daddy of all those cartridges you just mentioned. Give it the honor that it deserves because if that round was never developed. Those other round would’ve never been developed. As it should be honored.

I still hunt with my 03-A3. It shoots good. Had to put a pad on it to fit my longer lop. Sights suck in low light even with red paint or silver sharpie but are great most of the time. Trigger takes getting used to. 220 round nose is my favorite bullet to shoot out of it. Kills deer bear and moose. Was a cheap gun but now not so much. Was talking to an old man at a gun shop about old guns, told him I was looking for one and noticed he didn’t have one, he went out back and got it out and sold me it. I’m sure my sons will fight over it some day.
Ron my last two purchases were 3006 . A Mauser Sporterized drilled and tapped. The other was a Smith and Corona O3A3 Sporterized with a peep sight I now have the choice of re-barreling to a 35 Whelen. Many years ago I was in Kalamazoo Michigan and found a Brazilian Mauser a 08/34 30 chambed in 3006.

I have two 1903 Springfields. One has been Sporterized. I also have a Mouser 98 that has been Sporterized. They are both absolutely beautiful rifles. Not very many Markings on them. So I have never been able to figure out who did the Sporterizing. They are absolutely in perfect shape.
You have a Mauser, or autocorrect problems.
Bought my first bolt action, left hand ABolt, in 1990. An article by Bob Milek convinced me to go 30-06. Haven't regretted that choice one bit. Have owned most calibers from 243 up to 338 RUM. Still grab the '06 on most outings.
Bob Milek was awesome!! His writings certainly played into my purchase and 40+ year use of the .30-06, too. He passed away way too soon!
What a good show. I had a Remington 760 game master in 30-06 with fix 4X scope it shoot nice as long as full length sized reloads
The 30/06 cartridge was the design expanded proportionately to create the Browning Machine Gun 50 caliber cartridge.

Great video guys! When reviewing the diversity of rifles chambered in 30-06, don't forget the remington pumps.
The not-quite-true belief that the 308 matches the 30-06 with 150 grain bullets comes from the fact that the original (1906) military load with a 150 grain bullet left a 24" barrel at 2700 fps. The 308 can indeed easily do that with modern propellants. Then again, updated propellants will now push that bullet to around 3100 fps from the larger 30-06 case.
That’s exactly right. The 06 in a modern bolt action can easily shoot 150 grain bullets at 3,100+ with hand loads.
@@NCWoodlandRoamer Even staying within SAAMI pressures, there are 150 grain loads listed over 3100fps (many handloaders go well beyond those). Even Hornady's 150 Superformance load is listed at 3080 fps.
With today's propellants and bullets, the 30-06 can do virtually everything that the 300 Win Mag could do at it its introduction in 1963 (of course, the Win Mag has also improved over time). I live in an area where shots are below 300 yards and mostly below 150, so I tend to view the 30-06 as more than I need.
The vast majority of my shots are at targets, so if I got a 30-06, I would probably spring for a match-style chamber to make it easier to get an extremely accurate load. I figure it likely that I would spend more money overall on powder and bullets tinkering with different loads in a SAAMI chamber vs just starting off with a better chamber and barrel.
@@jfess1911same, I live in Southeast GA and you need to either clear the woods or find an off season cotton field to make a 300 yard shot.
I almost feel the same as if I have too much rifle, but when I think about never having to track a deer, much less losing an animal it's worth it.
Looking at handload data, given the same slug, powder brand and primer, the 06 will have about 75-125fps advantage over the 08. When talking the neighborhood of 3000fps, does that difference make a difference? Not sure.
@@Calaveras32Spcl As I noted, the 308, with 150grain bullets, exceeds original 30-06 performance. With 150 grain bullets, not so much difference, even today, to be a massive deal.
Once you get to heavier bullets for large or dangerous game though, the difference matters more. Using the same 178-grain ELDX bullet in Hornady factory ammo, for example, the 30-06 maintains over 1500 ft-lbs of energy about 100 yards farther than the 308. Similar with Nosler partitions or accubonds. This might matter for a once-in-a-lifetime elk hunt.
If you worry about big bears, the 30-06 definitely has the edge, especially with finding factory ammo loaded with 190+ grain bullets.
Boring Technical Stuff:
The 308 was optimized around a military 147-150 grain bullet, but the 30-06 still has some carry-overs from its parent, the 30-03 that make it more suitable for heavier bullets. The 30-03 was designed for a 220 grain bullet. The 30-06 retains the longer case neck and the bullet can extend farther out in front of the case (head height). Compared to the 308, the 30-06 allows the use of a longer, heavier bullet before encroachment into the propellant compartment happens... and the 30-06 starts off with more propellant in the first place.
Ron, I think you've mentioned before, but the impetus for the new US cartridge was due to the American's experience in the Spanish / American war where the Spanish was using a 7 mm Mauser cartridge that clearly out performed the 30-40 Krag.

My grandpa had a 30-06 hunting rifle that no one ever saw. When he passed away I asked for it. When my mom brought it home for me it turned out to be a sporterized 1903 built in 1917 the same year the rifle and the military went to Europe for ww1. I don’t know if it served in that conflict. But on the barrel it was stamped 9-42 USMC I don’t know its service history there either. (Wish I did) I had a gunsmith check it out and go through it a few years later after I had been hunting successfully with grandpas old 30-06. The gunsmith asked if it shot good. It did for sure. He said good. Because the barrel showed signs that it had been shot a lot! So who knows the history of it in its military service. Either way because of its history and more importantly handed down from my grandfather it is by far my most cherished firearm. I am looking forward to 30-06 week! And yes. I couldn’t just have one of them. So I have a Remington 700 30-06 also.
I have 25/06, 6.5/06, 270, 30/06 and planing on building 6/06, 338/06 and maybe the 35 Whelen. Love the 30/06 case. Plentiful brass and great all a round cartridge.
You should look into the 338 Sherman. If I was going for a big bore based on the 06 case, it’d be that one.

Thanks guys - looking forward to this series of videos. I inherited a Brno ZKK600 in 30.06 from my dad when he passed. I took it out a few times, but struggled endlessly to get any kind of grouping. So I took it to a gunsmith to see what was going on, and it appears that the recoil lugs on the bolt has been damaged. I am having it fixed now and cant wait to get it back (hopefully before we go hunting in July). It still has work to do here in Africa - the freezer isn't gonna fill itself 🙂
I bought my first 30-06 last year. It is a M1 Garand from the CMP! I'm taking it Hog hunting next March to Texas! Sighted in at 100 yards with exceptional groups! Might sound strange but, i don't have to actually watch the video to understand the information! Both of your voices are To The point and soothing to listen to!

That '03 Springfield in 30-06 was also what the Marines used at Guadalcanal in WWII!

Fudd alert. Been shooting for 50 yrs. . My first centerfire rifle was a Rem 700 BDL in 30-06. Never considered another cartridge. Sold it about 10 yrs later. Still have a Brazilian 1908 Mauser 98 rebarreled in 30-06 with a stepped barrel that shoots 1/2 inch. Great video. Good rapport between you guys.
The 39-06 has been my go to and remains my favorite because of its versatile in large game hunting its feed my family and myself for decades and continues to, great cal and thanks for highlighting it's usefulness ,great tutorial on this, God bless
Absolutely love my Remington 1903a3 30-06. It wears a C-Style stock, Nikon Buckmasters 6-18×40mm scope. A piece of American history and one sweet hunting rifle.
I shot my first deer in 1974 in Michigan with a model 700 BDL in 30-06. I had a K2.5x scope with the duplex reticle. That was 68 years after the 30-06 came out and 50 years ago now. Get right with Jesus because this life is a flash.
Awesome video, love seeing the .30-06 getting its due. Small correction, Medal of Honor recipients "earn" the MOH, they don't "win" it, it's not a contest. Innocent mistake but an important distinction.
I just had a new 30-06 barrel put on my Remington 7600. But I had my gunsmith get a 1/8 twist 18" barrel. I hand load the Barnes 180gr ttsx and it's been my back country go to rifle for a while now. I got the rifle when I was 16 years old, I worked and saved my money and had my dad get the rifle for me from a pawn shop. I'm a lefty and there weren't my left hand bolt actions available in 1982 that didn't cost an arm and leg. A few years later the same pawn shop had a left hand Remington safari 300wm and yes I snagged it up as well. Great rifles and I can hunt pretty much anything on the planet with the correct hand loads with these two rifles. 30 caliber America's caliber.

What I wouldn’t give for a Ron Spomer video on the Remington 760/7600s. Slick old rifles, were real popular here years ago for drives.
I grew up despising the 06 and at 18 i bought my second High powered rifle in .270. My first being a .243 model 70 win. Dad gift to me for my 14th birthday. Later i got a little smarter and and while reloading for my two rifles and noticed the Ballistics on the 30-06 and that's it,I knew right then i was going to have one of the Greatest rifles ever Built now have a couple of them. The Ballistics are incredible with what we can do with the 06, pariedogs & groundhogs to the Mighty Grizzly, Buy one and find out, love the 06 week, looking forward to seeing more, Thanks Ron😊
In eastern Europe where I live, almost every rifle is in 30-06, and if not, than it is in 308... We use this caliber for our every game animal and it is more popular than our 8x57JS or 7x64. 308 win is also number one with the 30-06 so I don't know what to say. They work really well and all people are happy with them. Also all new rifles in our gun stores are in this two calibers, you can find sometimes something else, but it is rare. I am waiting just now that Glock shows up in 30-06, because we don't have that jet 😂 Nice video as allways 👍
It's fairly popular in Germany, probably owing to all the US bases in the South.
No actually many more US servicemen in world War 1 were issued the Model of 1917 Enfield..

Love the '06 and its offspring, the 270 Win, 2506 Rem, and my new passion, the 33806!
My uncle had a lot of guns, some of which I saw at his place in Pennsylvania. He lived near several open fields, and towards the end of his life became a varmint shooter. But he had his big guns, too, for Alaska and Canada. Somewhere in the middle of these was an Enfield, the old P16 military rifle. In 30-06, of course. When he passed, his kids made a mincemeat of what I was supposed to get (I'm the only real shooter in my generation of family), and all I got was that Enfield. Which was fine. But my uncle, for some reason which I would like to ask him someday when I pass, butchered the rear sight and put a railway tie of a stock on it. One of those "sporterized" military rifles. Because of the hacked up sight, I was more or less defeated putting a scope on it, so I had to use the peep sight. I'm now 73, so you can guess how well that went over back then (this was about 10 years ago). Anyway, I enjoyed it and reloading for it, then gave it to my grandson, currently in the Marines. I'll let him enjoy all that recoil, courtesy of that steel butt plate.
Sergeant York most likely used a M17 as most of the doughboys used M17 . As Springfield could manufacturer enough as they were having problem manufacturing firearms. And P14 Enfield in .303cal was fall manufacturer for the British
M1917. They didn't abbreviate back then.
Took my first deer with a Savage .30-06 rifle. Bought some other rifles, but my .30-06 is always my favorite. Will be taking my savage 110 classic to Africa next year. If that makes me a 30 year old fudd, so be it. Looking to add that springfield a304 to my collection now. Great video Ron, keep up the good work!

I really love your videos on the 30-06 Ron. Another excellent job by you and your friend. As I mentioned before I have 2. A 1984 Browning BAR and a 2018 Ruger American bolt action. Love them both, but after 40+ yrs the BAR got a bit heavy and the Ruger is lighter to carry in the NH mountains. Love you work Ron.Always an excellent job well done.

I never owned an M1 Garand, but I did own a Springfield 1903- 30-06. Back in the day you could buy military surplus rifles pretty cheap.
A friend once said: A person equipped with a .22lr rifle, a 12ga. shotgun and a 30-06 rifle can hunt any game in America. And with todays modern powders and projectiles, I believe that is true. Are there better suited rifles for certain areas, yeah most likely. But that doesn't change the fact that the 30-06 can still get the job done, and it has proven that over and over for decades.

30-06 is one of my all time favorite cartridges. Ive been using it for close to 30 years now and have taken all of my firsts with it. Killed my first whitetail, elk, black bear, moose, and caribou with the 30-06.

My very first service rifle given to me by my grandfather when i was just 10 years old, a 1903 Springfield. That was 47 years ago and granddad is gone now but myself and my kids still enjoy shooting this old gun, maybe some day I'll pass it on to one of my grandson's.
I recently watched Sgt York again and I did not see a guy shooting a 1903 left handed quoting scripture. Could he be thinking about the sniper in Private Ryan? Not to sidetrack a cool video and keep them coming…
Yes, the character played by Barry Pepper in SPR. A sniper in WWI couldn't have had an 03A4 anyway. They were strictly WWII.
York carried the M1917 Enfield, which actually was more common in WW1.

The old myth of enemies hearing the Garand ping is funny to me. How would anyone hear anything after hundreds of high powered rifle rounds going off during battle and then being able to pick out that ping at distance. No way.

When I bought my Smith Corona 1903A3 at CMP South I probably also should have grabbed a Remington 1903A4. Some years ago I was able to buy a Lyman Alaskan NIB, which CMP says is the proper scope for the 03A4. So now I have a scope with nothing to use it on since I also don't own an M1C or M1D and only have some CMP M1 Garands. :-(

Great Choice.
As with any other factory rifle, don't expect great sccuracy unless you go through the rifle and make sure everything is correct. Action Bedding, Barrel bedding ,well adjusted trigger and well mounted scope. My hunting 30-06 rifles, tuned and loaded properly have 3 shot groups as small as sub 1/2" MOA and have really been as accurate as my 243, 308 & 270 rifles. It is a truly great cartridge.

My go to rifle is a 28 year old Ruger 77 MKII All Weather in 30-06. I bought it new and before I fired the first round I took it to a gunsmith who specialized in competition rifles. Glass bedded action, trued bolt face, 2.5 lb trigger. It shoots great. If I had to chose one rifle from my collection and let all others go, it would be my pick. We know each other. 30-06 is a great, versatile cartridge for North America.
You guys can tout your 1903 Springfields all you want. I'll keep my Enfield Pattern 1917 thank you.
The 1917 is "Model" or "Model of". "Pattern" is Brit nomenclature and only applied to the P-13 and P-14.

I feel super privileged to be in knowledge of both the 30 ought 6 and the 6.5 creedmoor... Both hunt well and target shoot even better.

Well now this is a interesting video and a very interesting topic. I think the story about the enemy. Waiting to hear the clip exiting the rifle. Making a pinging noise is just simply a interesting story. When you are in a fire fight, there is so much noise around you from both sides that there is no way the enemy's going to hear that pinging noise. But then it is a interesting story.
They didn't wear hearing protection back then. You were practically deaf in the first 5 mins.
Great info guys! A little creative with terminology, but great (example: technically a "heat shield", it's called an upper handguard.). The 30-06 is useful for ANY North American game.

I have a Winchester 95 which was issued with Theodore Roosevelt Roughriders chambered in 30-03.
It’s my understanding that the Winchester 95 was the original weapon that was issued the 30-03 but I know his story and I could be wrong.
You need a ruger 77 and 760s and 740 7400 7600 lol I have seen multiple truck loads of deer shot in the same day with 06s back in the day everyone you ran into in the woods had a 06 most of em where pump guns around here

To quote Clint smith “you just fired 8 rounds of 30-06 everyone is deaf” the story of the ping is for the most part bunk if you are standing about 15 yards or more after fighting in a war with no hearing protection you are not going to hear it not to mention that if you were out the guy next to you wasn’t or the guy with a m1919 or a Thompson or m3 grease gun or carbine or BAR the us used combined force not just rifle men. Even if someone did hear it you can reload the garand very quickly and probably won’t be standing in the open if you can help it.

Loved this video, and I'm really looking forward to more 30-06 videos! Worth adding a bit of context on the 1,000 yard iron sights and accuracy of the 03 Springfield. The 30-06 is certainly lethal out to 1,000, even Martini Henry rifles have killed soldiers past 1,500 yards in combat. However the context is, and this is very important, volley fire. Nobody expected even the best shooters of the time to shoot a single rifle and hit a target at 1,000 yards, but with enough rifles and enough bullets you can suppress and even hit enemy troops at those ranges in combat. So not so much about individual men, but the collective work of a entire platoon, firing at another large group of soldiers.
The other thing about accuracy of WW1 and WW2 period rifles is their standard for accuracy was far different than we have today. A sweet shooting "sniper rifle" was a rifle often capable of around 2moa, sometimes even 2-3, while standard rifles shot more like 4-6. So that's significantly worse than a store bought "cheap" Ruger American off the shelf, or about the same as a standard military issue AR-15 or AK-74. That's not to say those old sniper rifles were inaccurate, around 2moa is a very functional practical accuracy level and shooter skill is most important, but it really does go to show just how far modern rifles have come in accuracy.
(also as a aside, the USA wasn't the first nation to bring a semi auto battle rifle to the field, that was done in WW1, and Russia already had the SVT-40 too, which is quite excellent. The USA was the first however to field it on a mass scale to all standard army infantry troops. In other nations the semi auto battle rifles were in smaller numbers and issued only to elite units.)
