Well it's normal, it's a magic race - you're supposed to do some magics not charge in like a swordsman

That is a mere compensation for having the best tier 2 creature and a strong tier 3 both this dudes are shooters aswell. Add that Sprites are reasonably good and you have to compensate it with outmost pathetic tier 4 and 5 creatures. Tier 6 and 7 are very good aswell, by the way
