    Thanks for watching! Down the line I will most likely make an update on this camera once I use it more and get more familiar! To give some clarity on the first clip. That was the first sequence I made with this setup to test in low light. Window light being the main light source and no de-noiser was used.

    It's an amazing camera. Can't praise it enough. One aspect that is often overlooked is the ergonomic aspects in the sense that it's really comfortable and easy to use. Also when shooting in low light, this is one of the best, if not the best cameras out there.

    Dope video man. I can really respect that you don't "go with the trends" when it comes to gear. You stick with what works for you and find a way to make the minor flaws not a huge issue for your creativity. Keep grindin' brotha. I think you're dope.

    Tamron SP lenses could solve your focus noise issue. They're super sharp and fast focusing, and very reasonable for pro-level lenses. I recommend giving them a try!

      I have a Sony A7 iii and hate the size. I have big hands and the smaller mirror less cameras just feel too small. The menu system on the Sony is also pretty complex compared to Nikon. Thinking about going back to D850.

    I love seeing these balanced videos that acknowledge the weaknesses and the strengths without feeling like you have to jump on the Sony bandwagon. Some of us have a rather significant investment in Nikon glass and cameras that making any kind of switch problematic. If they can do everything I need why would I switch anyway? Loving both my Z6 and my D850 - it's the perfect combination for me :) Thanks for putting this out there!

    Quiet focusing: Nikon has the Af-p series, that does have smooth, silent autofocus even with contrast based cameras. But, its slow to find and focus (in video), cheap lenses (10-20, 18-55 and 70-300). It works ok, but you will miss some shots etc. Dont use Nikon for video any more.

  • @WahidFayumzadah
    @WahidFayumzadah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Yeah, biggest downside of the F mount lenses is that AF noise. And I must say that the focussing of a z lens goes much smoother, doesn't focus so rapidly.

  • @jamesoliver6625

    Shoot D850 and D750 now. Thinking toward D780 simply for the BSI 24mpx sensor over the standard CMOS on the 750 AND (more importantly) the higher resolution Live View screen. I was fine with the 750's screen until I bought my 850 and the accuracy difference was massive. Older guy (eyes) that is strictly a photographer so the video perks are meh to me. The better possibilities in low light that the BSI offers also intrigue me. I'd like to see a comparison of the low light differences between the 750 and 780 just to see if it would be worth it. I would have gone Z series IF Nikon hadn't abandoned the ability to photograph and autofocus with the large array of AF-D glass I own. They don't offer anything like the 180mm f2.8 AF-D or the 135mm f2 DC AF-D in Z mount glass.

    Hi Evan. It's August 2024 and after an agonisingly long search and decision-making process I bought the D780. It's not arrived yet, it will be here next week. So why did I buy it? Well, I've been a NIkon shooter since 2007. Over the years I've accumulated dozens of lenses, including a few expensive super telephoto lenses. I had a few affairs with Canon and Fuji, with my latest GFX50SII bound to become my all-time favorite for travel, landscapes and reportage. But Nikon has always been a prevailing system in my life and it continues to be one. With time passing I developed a growing need to step into the realm of video. And I also needed a backup for my ageing D750 (which is in pristine condition BTW, but lacks good video features). So I decided for the D750 to be my backup, but not for the GFX, but for another Nikon. I initially opted for the Z6II, not the Z6III since its "new" features IMHO do not justify the big price difference and the upgrade from the Z6II altogether. The infancy issues with this camera are just another argument against spending so much for a body and a kit glass. I knew about the D780, but I completely ignored it, since I "knew" (or so I thought) that it being a DSLR means it's worthless for video. I was just planing to put my entire F-mount glass fleet up for sale when I watched a video on YT where a guy said the D780 is a hybrid of both worlds - the DSLR and mirrorless. So I did some more reading and studied the topic. To my surprise, I found the solution. By buying the D780 I'm gonna have a great backup for my D750 (my wife who often times works with me on photoshoots) will be able to use the camera no problem because she got used to the D750 (that's yet another great thing about Nikon). But most importantly, I'm not gonna have to sell my lenses, or keep them, get the Z6II and fiddle around with the FTZ adapter (which adds more bulk, length, looks dumb, and doesn't improve on anything really). For the purpose of shooting videos, I bought an entire rig for the D780, including the follow focus, monitor, matte box, battery, mic, LED light and other stuff. And I know it was a great decision, and that I'm gonna be happy to use it for years to come.

    If your camera does whatever you need it to do it doesn't matter if it's a 5 year old camera. people should only upgrade when the camera is limiting their creativity. SO TRUE

    Great review despite being 3 years old, I use my D500 in a similar way. Nikon's 780 is it's last consumer DSLR most likely, and can take great photo's and decent video's, on my 500 I use a 17-55 2.8 DX lens, it's amazing but no VR, but t's quiet! My buddy uses a manual focus lens with his 850 for video and its great, but noisy lenses is a Nikon issue.

    Great review. As a D750 shooter, the deal breaker for me is no battery grip. My photography consists of “stills” only as a portrait photographer; so, the video aspect doesn’t excite me to upgrade. The D750 is a beast for portraits, especially with a Nikon battery grip,

    Good review...although I'm not sure its fair to ding it a point for it being a DSLR, and being heavy... It's sort of in its nature as a full frame DSLR. Also, regarding extra costs for the Atmos and external recording, I don't think any other full frame DSLR will give you these features or allow you to record log internally natively. I think the reason why Nikon took so long to put out these features is the same reason they never released lenses with a silent motor. It seems they have purposely catered to their core customer base of pro photographers, and any that use these DSLRs for video are professionals that have external recorders, pull their focus manually, record audio externally etc.

  • @Foggycelik
    @Foggycelik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One important question.
    If we record with an external mic, will we still have that focusing noise problem?
    Can we use the mic on top of the camera? Or it'll still catch that noise too?

  • @benjamingless7120

    Does the Display of the D780 stay on in Liveview when the external recorder is attached? Most of the dsrls I used turned the Display off when they are connected to hdmi but mirrorless cameras keep the Display on. What about the hybrid d780?

I'm also I D700 user, and I really want to upgrade it because I'd like to have more megapixels and better low light performance, and also maybe experiment with making videos. The D780 seems like the best camera Nikon has for me, but I'm just not sure if it's worth the upgrade since the D700 is still amazing.

  • @TizOnly1
    @TizOnly1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not trying to knock anyone's personal decisions, but to me there's only two reasons to even consider the D780 over a Z6 right now.
    1. Second card slot
    2. Autofocus for action
    Aside from those two things, the Z6+FTZ delivers everything the D780 does, while also obviously delivering a new lens mount that improves video performance immensely. It isn't just the focus noise on the F-Mount lenses, it's also how they rack focus. Even on the Z6, it's a jump to focus, instead of a smooth rack. The Z6 is also obviously cheaper at this point.
    Actually, now that I think about it, there is one other thing the D780 currently has over the Z6- HLG profile for video. Any chance we can get a video on how that looks?

Can you use the same color grading for d810's flat profile (internal recording) and for d780's external N-log recording? Anyway, N-log is available only for external recording in d780? Very relevant reflections. In this age of smartphone images and video clips, I find it somewhat puzzling that quite a few comments here teach us that if you are going to shoot video, get equipment optimized for that. I missed the most important point with hybrid for me: On-chip PDAF is often necessary to utilize the resolution power of recent primes, like the Sigma 135/1.8 A.

    Does the older G lenses autofocus better (quicker/smoother) on D780 than the Z6 with FTZ adapter? Because that'd make 780 a clear winner for me. The S lenses are parfocal and have STM motors but they lack true manual focus rings and are very expensive for eg. 24mm S Lens is 2x more expensive than the 24mm G lens.

    I currently have the D5300 and am about to jump to full frame. Would you recommend this one as a good start or should I look into the 810 or 850? I do mainly stills but am working on learning the video side as well. Thanks

      I am a D5500 user and I do mostly landscape and street photography. After a thorough research, I decided to get a D780. (D850 is beyond my budget). I'll be buying it next week.

    i agree with you whole heartedly as i have invested in the nikon system as well (bodies, lenses, flashes, remote, etc etc) and the Z system didn't allow me to use my collection of D lenses. But nikon is very very late to the game and only produced this hybrid recently and with a premium price too. Unlike professionals who makes money from their gear and has no qualms in investing, hobbyists only spend money on their gear. Since nikon is so late into the game for video, i am not surprised that some nikon users have already added (but some switched to) other gears which has better video capabilities. What is worrying is that despite the investment made in nikon lenses, especially D lenses, the future with nikon looks bleak especially since they no longer support their older lenses with the Z mount. So, this D780 may have come a little too late, especially considering that it's video capabilities still lagging behind others with IBIS. Since i am a nikon user with lots of older lenses and if I were to consider buying something for video and photos, i have a choice of getting the D780, pay a premium price but face an uncertain future with the entire system becoming obselete in the near future or I can stay with the D750 and use the same budget for the D780 to get a whole new mirrorless system with much better video capabilities and a brighter future for my future investments.

    Love the support for the big ATL, being from Atlanta myself. Inspiring work. Seems like the D780 is like a D700 (x2 sensor AND screew type focus) and a Z6 (w/o IBIS) combined. Would be a nice addition to my collection. However, just invested in a Z6. There's a D780 in my future for sure.

    I am a old Nikon use , I have of lots old film glass and I haven't gone DSLR - now with things changing to mirrorless I have been hung up on what to go with. I love stills and want to dabble in video and I love low light. Price isn't an issue for me. I don't know if I should go D750 D780, D810, D850 or Z 6 or Z7 - Watching this was very useful and now has me leaning off the D850 (45px) to D780. Any suggestions or advise?

      I think you meant the first time Nikon delivered a pro-level video and DSLR camera that focuses properly in video or live view mode? Because the D850 offered 4K full frame, when not even Canon had that on anything, the D5 has that as well, the D850 has built in time-lapse and even 8K time-lapse in software. The Nikon D6 offers pretty amazing video, even the focusing is pretty close to the D780 in live-view or video. Nikon has offered pro-level video features in quite a few camera's, it's just they didn't focus all that well.

    The footage looks dope. Every system has its issues. I recently added a Z6 to my D810. I went full Full Fuji in between and traded my d600 in for the a7iii last April but I’m having a hard time letting go of Nikon (and Fuji now). Truth is everything makes amazing output these days. The Z glass is crazy good.

    I love Nikon. Man, I would this camera.....🥴 i honestly want to try them all bought I’m not a millionaire.😂 I bought a D3500 in the summer. I love it, but it could be better! The auto focus isn’t always accurate for photos so I rarely use it and the video is kinda the same! I just took my first video the other day.

    I am really interested in getting into sports photography and maybe trading in my D7100. I don’t have any fancy lenses so I would have no sense of abandonment if I left behind my kit F-mount and my 35mm lenses for a Z6. It also helps that the Z6 is slightly cheaper than the D780. But then if I were to buy a Z lens 70-200 for sports / general use, it costs sooooo much more money than the F mount counterpart. The mirrorless lens prices are really killer for a Joe Schmoe like me. Wondering which direction I should go? I really wanna take getting into sports photography seriously, and I’ve been thinking about getting off of DX for a long while, but is there any benefit to being on a mirrorless for this line of work or should I save my money and learn on the D780 and ride out the DSLR wave?
    Not to mention that Nikon is offering up to $400 CAD in any trade in towards a D780 on top of the value for the camera. Not sure how much my D7100 is worth but maybe that’s like $900 off. All things that are jumping around in my mind.

    Great video, I Owned a lot of Nikon Cameras and I have been allways adopting what they are releasing as tech changes, like when they released the D800, I owned, and worked with it but with some room for improvement, I owned also the D810 that I think is what the D800 should have been, but now for me that I'm entering more and more on the video side, the Z system I have to say is far superior in almost every aspect, I own Z mount lenses and they are incredible, they are crazy sharp, can handle better low light, IBIS on the camera, etc it's just a superior tech, that beeing said I also mantain a brand new D750, I love what that camera make's me feel when I'm shooting with it, it just make me happy, so I totaly understand you why the D780 will be perfect solution for you! great content, I hope you come up with some tutorials, for example how to manual focus with your dslr, etc. Best

    It is everything I want from a camera. But as I do mostly still photo and particularly portraits, camera without vertical grip compatibility is a good reason to look for something else. I wish nikon keep this in mind instead of giving too much importance to vloggers. A good review though.

    In my opinion... There was only 1 flaw and that's the video autofocus noises of the lenses...
    But I'd probably expect that Sigma lenses would be the best bet!
    I probably wouldn't get a Nikon, but I do like the D850 and this D780 looks good. I personally just hate the Nikon menus, button layout and choice of features.

    Great review. I think the D780 proves that Nikon are still committed to DSLR,S and the future replacement of the D850 will be a fantastic not the the D850 isn't already great, but for video but this D780 is a steps ahead of its pro big brother and if Nikon are doing this with higher end enthusiasts the next generation Z fx and pro fx DSLR,S cameras will certainly be better than the competition. I personally don't shoot a lot of video and it's not that I can't with my D810 and D500, yes there's limitations mostly because of lens noise and autofocus but this can be worked around be manually focusing and audio via external recording but I'm considering changing my D810 to a D780 but could I live with the 12mp drop. 👍

    IMHO, I don't think video is the primary use case for this camera. It's still a still camera first and foremost, with video usability if one needs it in a pinch.
    There are other cameras for video. This camera shines as a stills camera, with the fast and reliable AF of a DSLR, and superb live view with eye af on the lcd.
    I got it the day it came out, and find fast action + ovf, and portraits + Liveview to be perfect for my needs.
    As to the added costs to get the full video features, that's not a "flaw" as there are many other cameras that require an external recorder to get full 10 bit raw. It's just what it is.
