Thanks very much, I always think no matter how large or small they always deserve our attention. Yes, the Martins and Swallows are such a beautiful species and don't half migrate long distances to their breeding ground. Thanks again 👍
Thanks Rich, cracking film as always. The Merlin app is great, amazing what it picks up. Brilliant to see the tree swallows. Thanks again, all the best. 👍📷😎
Glad you enjoyed it Rob and cheers for stopping by for another vid! Yeah, it's a god send especially when you encounter new species in a new country. You too mate. R👍
Loved that, Rich. Those swallows were fantastic - gorgeous colours! Swallows and House Martins have arrived here now - need to work my technique for those. Local barn owl has been great in the evenings. Keep up the great work! Cheers 😀👍
Hi Mike, yeah they were so much fun as you could tell, lol! Nice to hear that they have arrived, May is always the time House Martins arrive at home in Cornwall, magical time of the year. Nice one on the Owls that's so good to hear, fingers crossed for a great breeding year. All the very best R👍
Nice to see the variety of small songbirds in your video. Great advice too to keep disturbances to mating birds to a minimum. Absolutely love the Tree Swallows and the Killdeer.
Hey Ron, thanks very much I love spending time with species small or large, I think they all need some attention. always the subject at the heart of what I do, yeah they are lovely and the Killdeer was at the end in the car park, total surprise. Cheers R👍
Thanks Raymond, they are such amazing birds and lovely vivid colours on the plumage especially in the sunlight. So nice to get a few in flight shots the easier way. All the best Rich 👍
Thumbs up 60 👍!! Great Richard! Ya tree swallow footage amazing especially the mating footage incredible! Just shows you what you can see on your local patch . Amazing 👍
Thanks Craig, such a amazing birds hence why I had to drag myself away, lol.. Yeah, great just to be out, and considering the concrete jungle the birds don't seem to mind. R👍
Many thanks Marc, they are special birds aren't they! The Blue sheen is so vibrant. Will need to catch up on yours soon, been kicking out a few I see! Might get a chance this week all being well. Have a good one R👍
Another video worth waiting for. Thanks Rich. As a fellow Canon shooter (r5 & r7) I can’t begin to tell you how useful and reassuring these videos are for me as I tread through this magnificent hobby of ours. Looking forward to what’s next from your Canadian adventure. Cheers, Sean
Thanks Sean, glad your finding the videos useful and as a Canon user it helps you out! It's such a great interest and the learning process is always part of the adventure, I always say everyday is a school day in wildlife photography and although I've been doing it for a longtime now I am still learning! Cheers Rich 👍
The only way I can successfully capture flying Tree Swallows is doing just what you are doing. Find the perch and then get them either flying in or flying out. Kudos to those who can capture them in air without a perch in sight. So hard to do and my skill level is not quite there. Any tips appreciated. As usual, Rich, I so like your putting the birds welfare first. I know a birder who plays recorded mobbing calls to stir up different species to show people on his bird walks. Can you imagine the stress he causes to nesting birds!! Many of us have objected to this unethical practice but little has been done. So when I see people establishing ethically sound birding practices, I have to say a big thank you! Lovely photos at the end. Keep them coming!
Hi June, Great to hear from you and nice to see that you do similar, I've got a few handheld shots but they are quite challenging to get as you well know, still love the challenge! Thanks very much, as Elvis said they are 'Always on my mind' their welfare must come first. Yeah using calls to elicit a response is bad practice especially in the breeding season, stressful time as it is and you get a loud mobile bird call and the males get very worked up, not fair really! I've had words with people but they don't like it, it's just not fair, thanks for saying and it's always a comfort knowing others feel the same. Will do and have a great week. Quite a long video out next Sunday so I hope you can tune in again. Thanks R👍
Loved the footage of the pair of tree swallows great stuff and gotta love those red winged blackbirds they probably quite common over there but I love common stuff as much as the rarer ones fantastic 😂👍
Thanks Andy, yeah they are great birds and I saw a few of our Swallows which was nice. Yes, they are a common species but you've got to admire that colour in the wing and the very loud call. Nice to stop and appreciate the commoner ones. Thanks again mate👍
Hi Richard really enjoyed your video such a brilliant park to visit, seeing a large range of different species outstanding video the place looks so clean tidy and well maintained from what I could see, we just got back from Norfolk had lots of sighting’s of the Marsh Harriers but long distance away, we use the Merlin app I find it really useful especially trying to identify what birds are around, really the bits of information about the birds as well,I have tried avoiding using that word but the was FANTASTIC 😂😂😂😂 I’m all ways using that word can’t help brilliant video Richard thank you for sharing it with us. Martyn
Thanks Martyn, It's a really good spot and great to see they are providing homes for nature, birds and mammals which is superb! Glad you saw the Harriers in action, such beautiful birds and one I'd love to spend time watching and photographing, shame they weren't closer but there is always next time. Yeah the App is great and pretty much hits the mark again and again! Cheers on the word, I'm going to find a couple more and maybe some Cornish ones as recommended by a fellow photographer and subscriber. Lol.. My pleasure, cheers Rich 👍
Great job, Richard. I like your method of getting some in-flight photos of the Swallows. They are so small, fast and erratic to capture in-flight otherwise. Cheers, Phil
Thanks Phil, it's a easier way to capture those rapid birds in flight images but I do enjoy a challenge when using handheld photography. such striking birds aren't they. R😀
Some lovely footage & images there Rich. Just shows what’s there if you get out there & go & look with your eyes open, even in a green space area of a huge city nature will find a way. Those red winged blackbirds & tree swallows are striking birds, & the Kildare at the end looks very similar to our ringed plover here in the UK. Great stuff mate, enjoyed that. Off topic, but I noticed you’re now using a DJI pocket 3, would appreciate your feedback on it - maybe a pro’s & cons review, or comparison against your Go-Pro? Enjoy a few coffees on me bud. Keep on keeping on. Best, Nick
Hey Nick, Thanks my friend, it really is amazing what you can get in a busy place and I doubt I'll ever look a city the same again. Naively I always thought they were pretty devoid of some of the more interesting species but I was wrong, can't believe how well they adapt to us taking over their home, but comforting to see that all is not lost and they are people who are willing to help them thrive and survive! It's amazing how some of their commoner species are so striking, they all have a place in our admiration, yeah the Killdeer with an unusual name really do look like our smaller plovers, same family and quite an extensive line. Thanks for the bit about the DJI, I've been meaning to cover it for those TH-camrs who are thinking of changing their setup, I'll get some together pretty soon as see what I can kick out, be useful as it has many Pro's and a few Con's! You are very kind mate, I'll think of you when I have that brew and a Carrot cake. What a gent. Rich 😀👍
Great trip out! I have that Merlin app on my phone as well. I keep forgetting to use it when I am out. I've tried to use it while watching TH-cam and it misses a lot. I think it is due to the bird sounds are not on file for my area. Those kestrels are so cool! Thanks for bringing me along!
Hey Jon, Thanks for watching, yeah it's a great tool for bird ID especially for me in a new country but I always like to use my own skills for ID where possible. Yeah, they are cracking birds and I hope to see some here in Ottawa soon. R👍
Beautiful video filled optimism! Oh, I thought it was just me - the handful of times I played around with video on the Sony full frame, you can almost watch the battery drain😂
@RichardBirchett that ability to have 800mm on full frame on the Canon side is awesome! For now, I have to switch to that APS-c mode, which acts like 1.6x, turns the 60mp into 26mp camera, but gets me close to 900mm from a 200-600mm
@@DunrobinOntario Yeah it's pretty handy and that reach has it's uses in certain situations. Still you can't grumble at having 26mp, my Canon R3 only has 24.1 and I find that is fine for what I need, limited on cropping but with a good reach it's not always needed if you frame your subject correctly in-camera, and 900mm is a good max distance especially for small in the frame birds. 😄
@RichardBirchett for sure, totally agreed! Plenty of detail as long as you get it close originally! It's amazing how much these modern cameras have improved at avoiding noise, even when you crop... barely much to fix on the back end on lightroom or whichever! A giant change from my previous PowerShot all-in-1 camera! it just doesn't fit in a pocket anymore😂😂 (which really had its charms btw)
Hi Richard . I remember seeing your first impressions video of the 200 to 400mm EF lens with the 1.4 extender. Are you using that lens as much as you envisaged? I also have a 300mm 2.8 L and the 500f4 L but always fancied the 200 to 400 for its versatility.
Thanks Paul, I use it quite a lot and have found I do more than my fixed EF 500 f4 Mk II, to have that range from 200-560 with the Tele kicked in really does have so many advantages over fixed focal for obvious reasons. If I really need the light I do use the 300 or 500 but for an out all day lens I can take the 200-400 and it will do all that I require it to do, so versatile. And the optical quality and weight really is a massive bonus, I can hand hold quite happily, if your were on a Safari it would be amazing, the focal range, ample light it's superb for it. Never regretted buying it. Thanks again for watching. 👍
Hey Richard, absolutely the best camera I've used to date! The AF and Eye detection is incredible and the low light performance and video are superb. The R7 is pretty good but lacks too much as a main body for what I need it for, and the 4K 120 Slo-Mo for video is a must for me. You won't go far wrong, unless you face the agonising wait for an R1 which will likely be on backorder for an age. Cheers Rich
@@RichardBirchett thank you…..I figured as much…my goto camera right now is the 1dx mark iii….but thinking of picking this up since it’s at $4000….just as long as it gives me at least 5 years ….thanks again and keep doing great
