#St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) is right in the heart of #Venice. It is 180 meters long and 70 meters wide. This is the only “piazza” in Venice, since the rest are “piazzales” or “campos”.
Its construction began in the 9th century and adopted its current size and shape in 1177. But it was not until 100 years later that this square was paved.
Piazza San Marco is one of the most beautiful squares in the world. Napoleon Bonaparte defined it as "The most beautiful salon in Europe".
The square is located at the lowest level of Venice, so when there is "acqua alta", St. Mark's Square is the first place to be flooded. When this happens, authorities must set up walkways for locals and tourists to pass. Depending on the era, if you are lucky (or unlucky, it depends on the viewpoints), you will be able to see the water square.
he most important buildings in the square are St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the #Correr Museum, the Campanile (the bell tower of the basilica) and the Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower).
On the Renaissance-style upper balcony of the Clock Tower, two bronze statues of Moors chime the hours. During Epiphany and Ascension, you can watch the procession of the Three Kings guided by an angel every hour.
The Columns of Saint Mark and Saint Theodore, located at the entrance to the square on the Grand Canal, are also worth a look. They were built in granite and erected in 1172, where public executions took place.
