Amnesty Int’l Calls for Moratorium on Private Spyware After Israeli NSO Group Pegasus Revelations

  • Calls are growing for stricter regulations on the use of surveillance technology after revelations that countries have used the powerful Pegasus spyware against politicians, journalists and activists around the world. The Pegasus software, sold by the Israeli cybersecurity company NSO Group, can secretly infect a mobile phone and harvest its information. While the company touts Pegasus as intended for criminals and terrorists, leaked data suggests the tool is widely abused by governments to go after political opponents and dissidents, according to reporting from The Pegasus Project, an international consortium of 17 media organizations. We feature a PBS “Frontline” report on the shocking findings that the Israeli government allowed NSO to continue to do business with Saudi Arabia even after the Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated in 2018 in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, and allegedly used Pegasus to surveil Khashoggi’s fiancée. “Contrary to what NSO is claiming, the spyware Pegasus is used to target people absolutely unrelated to criminal activities or terrorism,” says Agnès Callamard, secretary general of Amnesty International. She adds that The Pegasus Project has exposed that abuse of powerful surveillance technology “is systematic, and it is global.”

If all humans thought in that way the human race would be doomed to an existence without free will and that is, simply, not an option. If this were not so, scientist could not tell what a person's actions will be before they decide to act. We show those with power what they can and cannot do. This is why knowledge is power. It was not known until now that Pegasus is and has been violating such a basic human right on such a massive level. A dangerous dangerous thing. We have the information now and the ability to analyze this information. That is free will. The steps forward are those of free will. The chains are in your mind. The chains are acceptance. Your will dies when you accept. Stop speaking of the elite as if they are made of anything but skin, sinew, flesh, bone and blood. They are not invincible gods. @@MonaLisa-lu8zi Hi! Agree that the psychopathic brain produces the psychopathic mind. However what looks like dysfunction from POV of the more evolved mind is actually a mindset which was selected for. It was a ‘feature’ which we now perceive as a ‘bug’.
Tread lightly on the utility of medical imaging. There is a researcher who tried to correlate PET scan patterns to psychopathic behavior. Very promising study until he looked at his own scan which was typical of what his study thought psychopathic! Tough theoretical problems are inherent to investigation of a dynamic process by static means.
The development of the brain does indeed parallel the mind. However there are environmental modulators which affect genetic expression, including mental activity itself. Everything is connected to everything else!
So we all have the genetic potential for psychopathy. Basically, most of us repress this most of the time, but not always or completely. The difference between sociopaths and psychopaths is that the repressive activity of sociopaths is developed but becomes impaired, whereas the psychopaths never develop these repression mechanisms. Sociopaths regress to square one, whereas psychopaths never progress past it. They don't feel that square two is positive.
This whole area falls under the name of ‘Evolutionary Psychology’. Try it, you'll like it !
Thank you for your interest and input; keep it up! The nuts and bolts level of psychology daunting. The APA once said that the average person has 2.6 clinically evident psych malfunctions! This problem is further exacerbated by the production of similar symptoms by different conditions, sorting out their causes is challenging but does lead to neat ‘Aha!’ moments.
