  • The communities we call home and the ways we live greatly influence health and longevity. By studying “Blue Zones” around the globe, Dan Buettner has uncovered the macro-level secrets that lead long and vigorous lives. At the individual level, Dean Ornish presents new evidence that lifestyle choices can alter the course of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, cancer, and chronic illnesses. With their emphasis on nutrition, social connections, exercise, stress reduction, and a sense of purpose, both experts offer concrete tools that everyone can put to use.

I love Dean Ornish. I read his books, watch him on TH-cam, and follow his advice. I am 81 years old & still working part time in retail. There is no sitting in retail. Although I have never met Dean Ornish, I owe him so much! By the way, I answered yes to all of Dan Buettner's questions.

Dale Bredesen's breakthrough "The End of Alzheimer's" is a must read, if you can take the word of this retired physician/psychiatrist who treated hundreds of patients with short-term memory deficits with Dale's essential elements: stress management, increased physical activity (walking), Forest bathing, megaB vits, sex hormones/HRT (DHEA on the cheap), Kelp for iodine/thyroid function, of which "stress management" is key and anyone talking as fast as these presenters clearly are over stressed. God bless us one and all!

How abundant the environment was for people before towns depended on where you were. When Europeans turned up in some places they noted that the locals were healthy than themselves.

Great topic. I believe there is so much power in making lifestyle changes. Unfortunately our systems are not set up to help people who want this type of individualized care. Western healthcare is built by matching symptoms with meds. Restaurants are not conducive to plant based eaters. Functional medicine is largely not covered by insurance. Most of us are not in a place to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket. I was recently quoted $5,000 for initial testing and then ongoing monthly costs! I’m a 61 year old woman. I eat 95% plant based, and limit ultra processed foods. I try to move more and stress less! I am learning all that I can to build my optimal lifestyle. I hope that I live long enough to see affordable lifestyle care. I have to think this field is ripe with opportunity for AI applications for targeted diagnostics based on my genetics, my advanced bloodwork, my metabolism, my weight, my microbiome, my job, my diet, etc. I hope we see this sooner rather than later!

People in the blue zone areas do not appear to work long hours, and or to have high stress jobs. Thus, less stress = less cortisol which yields less inflamation and body damage.

Food guidelines follow blood type to some extent. Type O cannot live on legumes and will always want some animal protein or fish. Type A is more of a semi-vegetarian and can tolerate certain beans. And so on. Any agenda rhat expects all blood types to flourish on dairy and legumes will fail. As for grains, a total minefield! Turns our wheat is the primary cause for autoimmune gene activation. Wheat/barley/rye is the worst gluten but some folks will need to go grain-free to heal autoimmune conditions. Everyone needs to avoid man-made chemicals, glyphosphate, and other toxins.

0+ here, a few years ago I started cutting carbs off for my epilepsy as an alternative for surgery - my sleep improved, I had severe acne on my back since my teens all goes every time when blood sugar is low, my muscles grew at a rate i never dreamed of before, seizures control is pretty much the same since i respond well to therapy but seizure-like states during sleep significantly diminished and are even gone while on ketogenic regiment and 1-2 months past that.

Missed 1 in Dr. Dan quiz 2 folks and not 3. Great presentation. 2 greatest minds of 21st century. I have both of their books.
Misstep for Our country is that we are live in Capitalism Country. It is not profitable for businesses to not have sick people, or have long living individuals, or to have people eating beans or vegetables etc doesn't make $$$$

True blue zone health, happiness, and longevity will never happen in western culture until the car / screen-based life is removed from the equation.
