Considering (i) RTD confirmed ages ago they were working on a new Dalek desigm & (ii) he has a history of telling "no Daleks" lies (for e.g. S2), I'm not buying it yet.

I really don’t think too many Daleks is the problem, I just think we haven’t gotten a good Dalek story in a fat minute. Moffat seemed to have zero interest in them. Chibnall’s Dalek episodes were actually some of the better of his run, but still, RTD I think did the best job at making them interesting villians. So I’m a little sad he won’t be taking a stab anytime soon

But then there was a tweet that came out about a new dalek design from someone working on the new series? Plus the information we had in the past suggested the daleks are in the final episodes of series 14 so i doubt this is true unless the break is to start from series 15.

Good content man. I hope we are taking a long break from the Daleks. RTD told such a great story with the last remaining Daleks after the Time War from S1-S4. Then Moffat kinda ruined them by bringing them back for random stories.

Steven Moffat's late mother-in-law was Terry Nation's agent, but I'm not sure that she was in charge of his estate. I'd have thought that would have passed to his widow and children. Either way, Moffat himself denied that the "Daleks must appear once a series or you lose the rights" clause ever existed - and he should know :)

I know most fans don't listen to Big Finish, but I'm so familiar with those Big Finish stories, and I'd rather get some plots that I don't know the endings to. Like it's nice to not know where a story is going y'know?

The Daleks featured in less than half of the original run's seasons (12 out of 26-or 13 if you count the five minute cameo in The Five Doctors-and you count that as being in season 20). True they appeared twice in seasons 2, 3 and 4, which brings the average up, but it still shows that you don't have to have them every year.

Re: the wedding picture from the Runaway Bride. While I’m sure it’s a lovely BTS tribute to the late Howard Attfield, I’m curious how Donna’s mind adjusted to Lance and that botched wedding, and how her family talks about it. The set designers could have found any picture of Attfield, so the choice to use a Runaway Bride picture piqued my interest.

I think a Time War spinoff, following a separate character from the Doctor, and for a slightly older audience, but also in the format of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, could be a hit.

On the one hand, I would love to see a Paul McGann spinoff, but I also understand the issues with doing it. Namely l, how it could be different enough from the main series. I think that a movie could be cool as a callback, but just have it be good this time. (No shade at McGann, who was great in the original movie, but the rest of it was not great).
Other spinoffs I would like to see: A show about a former companion (like Sarah Jane Smith Adventures, obviously), Paternoster Gang (they have done extremely well in audio, but I know that costumes, sets and makeup would make this one very expensive), UNIT (this one has basically been put down as “too obvious by RTD), an anthology series where mostly humans are pitted against returning monsters and villains
Really, I’d watch most of what would come out, except a Sensorite spinoff.

I hope we do get a break from the Daleks. I don’t have any personal vendetta against the Daleks. But if you’re looking at it from the perspective. The Daleks were involved with almost every plot point from the beginning of Matt Smith’s time to Jodie Whittaker’s end. You gotta think that maybe they’re getting a little overused. Yeah there was a few occasions where they weren’t the main plot point but those were few and far between. Again, I have nothing against the Daleks, and I love them as a villain for the doctor. But adding a whole new I repertoire of villains would make Doctor Who dynamic again. The most unique villain ever stuck out in my head was the empty child. Unique and it was good for one off.

They may place some restriction on the series (like removing the Doctor from the TARDIS), or attempt to make it more of a single storyline rather than the episodic nature of the main show.

I love the Daleks and some of the BW recordings used to freak me the hell out as a kid. Whilst the series 3 story was a bit meh, and their defeat in series 4 wasn’t great - RTD generally did a good job of making them a genuine threat. They lost that majorly in the Moffat era - and whilst folk say the chibnall ones were better - I found them still quite one note and a bit cartoony in how they were written. Having them crop up as random alliances also doesn’t work.
We need them to be a big deal again, a major threat. Scary again. Cool, even. They haven’t been for a long time - they’re cunning, thinking evil killing things - not just angry shouty bins.
It would be nice to have them pop up less so it is a bigger deal when they do. Though I do think he’s pulling our leg a little because I’m pretty sure we’ve known about them in series 14 for a while?

  • @crimsonorc

I remember the stink caused by the newspapers about missing Daleks in Whittakers first season. Any Dalek break wouldn't last long. I don't think an 8th Doctor tv spin off is possible and would not work in conjunction to 15th Doctor stories being aired. I see 15th Doc having flashbacks.

  • @grantmason740

I don't think Sue Vertue has anything to do with the Estate of Terry Nation; that's a new one on me. Assuming the denials are false, an 8th Doctor spin off (or any other for that matter), could feature the Daleks thus potentially keeping them away from the main series.

RTD also told us he didn’t like the Master so it was a “surprise” when he reappeared (unless you’d read all the speculation). It gets to the stage where if RTD told me what day it was I’d doubt his truthfulness (although I’d go along with it because I *know* I’d end up better entertained and therefore better off as a result).
I’m sad to say that I can’t see the logic in launching a Paul McGann mini-series when they’re bound to be hyping Ncuti as the Doc and branding it as series 1. I’d love to be proven wrong, if it’s any good!

I thnk the McGann story is made up because of the fan desire. I think everyone involved would love to gift the fans that but it wouldn't work for a while. it could totally work in the future. Now , they need to build the world around the current doctor and those that he/ she affects in terms of world building. with other Scifi/fantasy universes, it's completely different people in different times but connected to the world. Mcgann would just be the same charasmatic fabulous doctor existing at the same time competing with his current body. one off eps showing The Doctor's past would be grand for all the others with the odd crossover, but trying to run too many doctors against each other would be confusing for the casual viewers they want to draw in. And even for more detailed viewers, you don 't want your loyalties tested by too many doctors at once

Nowhere near comparable. The Daleks are definitely an important piece of the show, but the TARDIS is critical

But the agreement with Terry Nations estate for the Daleks to continue to be used in the series says they have to appear in every season or the BBC will lose the right Stu ever feature them again

NO! No more Paul McGann content! Boring as hell to listen to. Poor actor. I just don’t get the attraction. So no, his attraction is absolutely NOT universal.
