    Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap is a 1989 platform game by Sega and Westone. This game is a direct sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land and starts in the final lair of the previous game. According to Wikipedia, it is widely considered to be one of the best games produced for the Sega Master System.
    The8bitbeast ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/T... ) shaves off over ten and a half minutes over the previous run ( tasvideos.org/1060M ) by grinding enough Charm Stones to open the Charm Stone door that takes you straight to the final boss.

    Man, I played this game a lot as a kid and the reskinned Turbografx-16 version on the Wii VC, and I had no idea you could actually skip to the final boss. Then again, what those Charm Stones did was vague and hard to figure out without some guide back then :P
    This is definitely the nostalgia talking, but I prefer the older sounchip for the SMS. The newer one made everything sound too midi'ish for me.

    This and Monster Land are my two most favorite SMS games. Also, thank you for recording this using the FM chip music instead of the normal shrill Master System music.

    Why does the music sound so different from my master system 2? Is this an FM mod?

      Yes, the FM chip.

    I know this is an old vid. But how did you get those charm stones to drop so easily? Even playing the game casually I never get that many in a row. Usually I just get 1 if im lucky

    • @_witsd
      @_witsd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's tool assisted - basically you keep rewinding and re-killing the enemies that CAN drop the stones until they do so. Same with the arrow drops.

    Wait so is that door to the final boss always there by default? I prefer a full game run tbh.

    • @gordontaylor2815
      @gordontaylor2815 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you get enough Charm Stones stocked up, then yes. Most of the "speedrun" is actually just grinding up the 99 stones you need for the door to the final boss.

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to get 99 charm stones. If it was there by default he would just get the key go back & maybe beat it within or under 5 min. It's way better to fully play this game & do all the levels & bosses in this with other characters you become in this game. The only thing I don't like in this game is that you have to farm a lot for money & get charm stones to unlock & buy certain items.
      The remake is a lot better. They took away getting charm stones for unlocking items & the farming for money is done a lot faster as you don't lose money when you save & restart the game. Also the Charm Stones are optional if you want to 100% the game.

      @Alianger ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tonyp9313 They did that in the GG port already but yeah it's a good remake.

    Almost 20 minutes of grinding for 99 stones. 12 seconds per stone... Is there really no better place to grind?

      This series is really good though, especially Monster World 4 on the Genesis.
      Also fun fact. The Adventure Island series actually ripped off this series.

    • @kendrakirai
      @kendrakirai 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Rip off? What, precisely, the HELL are you talking about?

    • @TomasZydelski1
      @TomasZydelski1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      More precisely, it was forked.
      What happened was that Escape/Westone technically owned the rights to the property but SEGA held the rights to the Wonder Boy game.
      When they wanted to port the game to the NES system, it had to change the graphics to something else to not infringe on what SEGA owned. Thus, Adventure Island was created.

      It seems you're right! Good call, I actually didn't know that before.
      By the way, my earlier comment wasn't meant to bash the series, as I enjoy them both.
