  • Loxford High School has had a colourful history since its inception 120 years ago. Now leading a Multi-Academy Trust it has come a long way since its beginnings as a small school on Eton Road at the southern junction of Woodlands Road. With thanks to alumnus A Hunte and former governor P Ballard for additional information around the school's history and development.

I attended Loxford when it was two separate sites - the lower school on Eton Rd as mentioned in the video and this, the upper school on Loxford Lane - between ‘79 - ‘84. The playing field while I was there was great, really spacious, and provided easy access to Barking park what with the gaps in the fence, but now with the new school having been built on the playing field it looks like the kids have zero outdoor space and the fencing that surrounds the new school looks designed to prevent escape as much as prevent entry to unauthorised people. Interesting to see Woodlands infants school on Harrow rd mentioned as I was part of the first cohort to attend the newly built Woodlands Junior school on Loxford Lane. I vividly remember as a 7 year old being walked in a group across from the infant school site on Harrow rd to the Loxford Park entrance of the new primary school, and just how modern it was: single storey, flat roof, open plan classrooms and hallways and a dining hall with big windows and a very high ceiling (certainly to my 7yr old eyes, that is)

What a great account of that time, moving from the old Woodlands School to the new one. I think those who experienced the transition years had the best of both worlds in a way, knowing what it was like before and after such huge changes. I think the new 2010 school building still has a back field and sports pitch (according to online Maps/satellite images) but they've definitely closed off access as you describe. I think you'd have to walk the long way round into Barking Park these days, but someone more current may be able to enlighten us about a remaining shortcut.

I remember in the 60s Loxford lane was like a country lane, and in the 80s when I was an Undertaker we did a funeral for the live in School Caretaker ( the Old Loxford School ) love your Vid's 👌

Sometimes when there's a break in traffic, the winding nature of Loxford Lane and the allotments to one side bring back the feeling of it being in the country. Interesting that you mention the live-in caretaker - a fascinating aspect of those Victorian schools was their caretaker's houses on site, usually at one corner of the plot. We're glad you like the videos and thanks for your support of the channel!

Great memories, I was there from1986 to 1990 had a great time, started off Lower site on Eton Rd to Loxford lane ..

It would be impressive if some of the teachers you knew were still there. And it would be great if some of those former teachers saw the vid and commented. I wonder if their time there was as rosy as it was for some of the pupils

I disagree. The one I went to - Becontree Secondary Modern was vile - old leaky buildings and bullying and sub-standard teachers..

Went to Loxford High from 80 to 82 coming from Dane Secondary along with Loxford Low kids. Was classed as the worst school in the borough then, now up there amongst the best. Proud to be associated with the school

You mean Dane Primary? You got to experience both sites and yes, it has a level of prestige now which was unlikely in the 80s.

Went there 77 to 80 it was Dane Junior High. Lived in Grosvenor Road then in Clementswood ward going to Cleveland Primary. Some of the pupils went to Dane and the others to Loxford Low based on what part of Clementswood you lived in. Loved Dane. Sad to see it turn into a Teacher training centre.

@@moynulrashid1909 Thanks for clarifiying the split between Dane and Loxford Lower. I didn't realise Dane took some of the kids and Loxford Lower the rest. I suppose once the new school on Loxford Lane opened, Dane was renamed Christchurch Junior?
